We were on the Grandeur of the Seas when it was on fire...we were at our munster station for four hours. It is amazing how many cruise ships appeared out the darkness that we could see and possibly would have to get on a lifeboat and transported to another ship. It was comforting to see those ships! However, we were taken to Freeport...we got off the ship to see the blackened backside of the ship. While getting back onboard, the CEO of Royal Carribean was boarding...we got to talk to him briefly.

Hey Matt, I just came back from my first ever cruise! Your informative blog saved my day dude, best ever short term vacation I had in years, best tips for beverage package, best tip for keeping hydrate, and best tip to book online for any activity available so to have a discount price. LOVED the all access BTS tour you recommend! Though my trip is only 3 night, with a lousy travel agent that knows nothing, thanks to you I still have the best ever cruise vacation. Truly thank you.

I was on Enchantment of the Seas and we had just left a port. An hour into the sailing we felt the ship slow down and eventually stop. Everyone was looking around like what was going on. That's when we saw a helicopter approaching the ship. Everyone thought it was a medical emergency happening but we all learned after the helicopter landed on the helo pad that we left a VIP(rich) family behind at the port and they helicoptered back to the ship!

    I have 2...
1st was in 1996 onboard Sovereign of the Seas (which has now been scrapped). We were on our way through the channel nearing San Juan, Puerto Rico harbor. For some reason, we were travelling OUTSIDE of the navigational buoys in the channel. Well, wouldn't you know it, but we got stuck on a sandbar. I want to say it was maybe 3 hours until the tugboats were finally able to push us free. It was pretty sweet though, because they had "open bars" to make it up to the passengers for the inconvenience.
2nd was in 2014 onboard Explorer of the Seas. We had some really rough seas and one of the lifeboats partially fell from its mount and one end of it fell and landed on a deck rail, and punctured through its hull.

I was on Freedom of the Seas this past January and on our sea day, we had to head back to Miami to drop off a passenger that had fallen very ill/injured and had to go to the hospital. The crew and Miami-Dade Coast Guard/Police came and got the passenger off the ship, just off the coast of Miami, and then we were off again. It wasn't something I expected on my first cruise but the captain was very transparent and the crew did a great job!

When asked what happened, evidently you can't jump from deck 6 to deck 5 in the Royal Promenade as a shortcut. The person waived but had broken their leg and neck brace was on for safety.

We were on Voyager last fall and when we took my mom to her cabin on embarkation day we were surprised to find a random person's sea pass card in the folio instead of one for my sister. Don't know who got my sister's card. I'm not sure I like that they are leaving the sea pass cards on the door instead of giving them to you when you check in. Guest services fixed it but I'd prefer they don't just leave them out in the hallway.

Was on Symphony in May 2022. We had to stay an extra day on board the ship due to bad weather in Miami and we can’t dock. A passenger was very sick and had to be hospitalized so we got close to Port of Miami during the storm to drop off the passenger. The ship went back out to sea to get out of the storms path. So many passengers were happy for an extra free day of cruising but others were not as flights had to be rearranged . Thank God we purchased trip insurance as it covered hotel, car rental, and change of flights due to unforeseen weather issues.

    Regarding a surprise guest!
The first time I ever got a Royal Up I was afraid I would have an extra guest in my cabin! When we first got aboard we all went to the Matre' D to arrange our dinners for the same time. When I gave them my cabin number, I was asked if I was Mitchell or Jeffrey. Well, I told them I was the only person in the room. Later when I got to the cabin the room steward was there and asked if I was Mitchell or Jeffrey! Again I said it was just me. By the time I came to the cabin later in the evening I was almost afraid I would find Jeffrey waiting for me in bed!
I am supposing that Jeffrey got an upgrade as well and was originally supposed to have my room. So when I got upgraded, he was not removed from the room properly. Luckily there was no Jeffrey. But still to this day when there is an extra seat or something, we always kid that is Jeffrey's seat! Too bad I could not charge my drinks to Jeffrey!

I was on Spectrum of the Seas in Australia on one of their three Royal Thankyou Cruises, thanking volunteers for assisting in the recent bushfires all around Australia.
One of the days, we heard the code "Charlie Charlie Charlie" indicating an incoming rescue helicopter to land on board. Naturally, with a ship full of rescue volunteers and enthusiasts, wanting to see how a cruise ship rescue is played out, everyone flooded towards the helical and front of the ship. It got so bad, that the staff had to block access to the front of the ship for security and overcrowding reasons..
So being on previous cruises, instead of wondering what's happening I simply went back to my cabin, and turned in the tv to watch it all unfold in comfort. Very memorable moment.

Hi Matt I have one for you. This was before I knew about making sure what's above and below your stateroom. Turns out we were right below the bar and all we could hear all evening was his lovely piano playing. And what was funnier was that mom and I checked it out and he had about four people listening to him so he didn't even need to use the speaker for his microphone but he did so anyway. Went to guest services and they were very awesome at getting us another room although when we got there we thought it odd that there was still plates of food sitting there. Happened to look outside and saw a body being taken off the ship and realized why they had a room available so quickly 😳 it was also at the back of the ship which was really wonderful until that night when we noticed and heard a party below us because it turned out this was the area for the crew to use as partying. Sigh. We just sucked it up as they say and enjoyed the rest of the cruise because thankfully they weren't partying every night

We were on a 15 night cruise aboard Radiance of the Seas, sailing out of San Francisco bound for Hawaii. About half way to Hawaii our ship was struck by a Rogue Wave. We were in a suite on the aft of the ship facing rearward toward the wake. When the wave hit it rocked the ship and our veranda door slammed shut which shocked the heck out of us. Shorty thereafter the Captain made an announcement that the ship had been struck by a Rogue Wave which was a first for him. We all had something to talk about that evening in the Concierge Lounge.

We sailed on a Voyager Class ship out of Bayonne some years ago, and during our MDR seating (late seating) we felt the ship turning fairly sharply, to the extent that liquid in the glasses on the table shifted to one side. We quickly learned that a crew member had jumped overboard. Unfortunately the search did not yield positive results. On another cruise a passenger experienced a serious medical issue on the last day of the sailing, resulting in the ship increasing its speed to return to its home port (again in Bayonne) the night before our expected morning arrival so they could get emergency services to disembark that passenger. By the time of our late seating in the MDR we had already docked, so our view out of the window was the pier in Bayonne. The good news is that the passenger's condition, although described as "serious," was apparently not life threatening.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii on the radiance of the seas. One of the ports we had to tender and they were rough seas. We were outside in the dark was moving up and down significantly causing there to only be a few seconds for There to be enough room to get onto the tender. It was incredibly dangerous and we later found after we made it to sure that they stop tendering from the ship because of this. I don’t remember how difficult it was to get back onto the ship but I absolutely remember being slightly terrified did the tender was going to list down and the dark up at the very moment that I was going to get into the tender. It’s moments like these that make you remember your vacations sometimes more than all the great things that happen😂

On Oasis in March 2017, we were pulling out of Cozumel when we saw pier runners rushing to the end of the dock doing the marionette dance. Nothing to do for them. As we reached the tip of the island it seemed like we were going the wrong way. The ship had to return to port for a medical emergency. The pier runners got on and the patient was evacuated. This also highlights that you should never travel without a passport and never without insurance.

A guest needed medical treatment and had to be taken by helicopter to the hospital. I turned on the tv to the front of the ships camera to watch the whole thing. The helicopter could not land as it was so windy. The guest and their family were taken up to the helicopter and the whole operation took about an hour. I was on that Symphony sailing myself when the Oscar Oscar Oscar occurred. The ship handled things very well and kept the guests informed in a very calm way. The only thing I would have asked them to do differently was having all guests go to the MDR to be checked in. That created insanely long crowded lines with long wait times - and this was still during semi-covid times (fall 2021). It's a shame they couldn't have spread out the guests to check in to different areas. But otherwise handled very well.

He asked someone in the back of the theater "should we leave"? Yes....there was a fire. It's a strange feeling on the deck of a ship late at night wondering where the fire is and if you have to get into one of the lifeboats!!! It was quickly put out and things got back to normal. On another cruise out of New Orleans, as we returned to port, the fog was SO thick that we couldn't see off our balcony. HOWEVER, all night long we could hear the ship horns. I suppose it was warning other ships as to where they were.....which meant there was another ship close to us!!!! Very freaky.

LOL, my very first 7-day cruise was on NCL out of Miami. So the first sea day it was announced that the ship had to stop at a small island that had an airport to offload a passenger who had a heart attack. So the ship stopped, the crew took the passenger ashore. But then the rudder broke on the tender boat and they could not get it back to the ship. So it took an hour or so to fix the rudder so the tender could get back to the ship.
Well that was not as bad as our cruise on one of Royal's Radiance Class ships, I think it was Serenade. We had a cabin right near the Centrum. If you have been on that class of ship you know that at night they have entertainment in the Centrum. So every night we would have dinner, go to the show in the showroom, spend a few minutes in the casino and then head to our cabin. The problem was the entertainment in the Centrum, which normally included a band, lasted until about midnight. So it was VERY noise and disrupted our sleep until things quieted down.

i went on an alaskan cruise last year on serenade of the seas. me and my brother were sharing a room, but once we got to our room we noticed that our sea pass cards were not in the little display on the door, but every other room in sight had them out. our sisters were two doors down so we figured we'd hang out with them until what we assumed has the cleaners had finished our room. as we were walking there, though, my brother said he saw someone walk in to our room. so we walked over and knocked on the door to see what was going on, and when we said that it was our room and there must be some confusion, the guy showed us a sea pass card that had the room number written on it in sharpie. he told us that it was our problem and we needed to go to guest services to figure it out ourselves. we had no idea what to do so we went to our parent's room, and they were livid. i was 20 at the time so i could have handled it myself but seeing my dad just lay it out on him was so funny. anyway apparently he was the pilot and had gotten on board the day before, (when the ship was still at sea for the previous cruise) and was leaving the next day (when the ship would be at sea for our cruise). the dude was being super pretentious and just flat out rude to me and my parents, and said he was given the room specfically from tha captain and even said we could talk to he, but then immediatly after said the captain wouldn't want to talk to us. after working it out with guest services we ended up getting a new room on the floor below us, but it was also an upgrade to a balcony so we were ok with it. personally i think actually finding someone else in your room is a better story than just someone being forgetful lol

I had a spa service later that day, and I learned a crew member had fallen to their death. He was on the outside of the ship, painting or something. He apparently didn't follow safety protocols. Very sad, but the authorities were conducting an investigation (like they should).

My husband and I got married on a Carnival and some of our family members decided to take the cruise with us (which we were perfectly fine with). Well, my husbands aunt amd uncle were in their cabin just chilling as they're a bit older when they heard something on their balcony. They look over and see a man trying to get in their balcony door. The uncle manages to wrestle him to the bed while the Aunt is in the hall calling for help. The crew/ security eventually arrive to take him away with no one seriously injured. Turns out the guy was wasted and was on his balcony when the door closed behind him. So he decided to climb over the dividers to try and get back inside. His wife was in their room freaking out because she thought he went overboard.

For 2 days our neighbor's balcony was being refurbished, and the noise made our room unusable. Next, our balcony was refurbished. For 3 days our curtains had to be closed The workers had to wake thru our room to get to the balcony. The following 2 days our other neighbor's balcony was being reworked. Again, the noise made our room unusable. So, for 7 days our room was unusable during the day. I could go on and on but I hope you get the message. Last year, March I think, I was on Anthem of the Seas with my best friend. I was napping and she (this was her first cruise!) was over in the casino when the ships alarms started going off. Scared the bejesus out of me! Worst alarm ever, would not recommend! Everyone was kind of stunned when we got out in the hall and started moving towards muster stations. Turns out it was a false alarm, they never did clarify what went wrong. Thankfully all was well!
