Hello Emma for some reason your comments are turned off.
But just to warn you keeping the bird feed like that without a sealed container will attract mice or rats to your shed. Get yourself an old biscuit tin to store it in

It is so refreshing to see a more realistic experience of gardening/allotmenting. Not everyone has the budget to put together proper raised beds etc from the get go. You are absolutely showing how it can be done and how we should just get after it and not worry about "perfection" and just enjoy the process. So nice to see your husband lending a hand.

Hi Emma Fantastic progress. Sorry for possibly causing you a lot of extra work but there was a chap on Gardeners world last Friday the did something quite interesting with old logs. He made low walls of sawn up logs as boundaries and wild life habitats. which I thought was a good idea however would mean a lot of sawing for you if you went for it!

Just cut some sticks to about 30cm and hammer in either side of your boards, that will stop them falling over
You are making amazing progress with your new plot, you should be proud 😊

Emma to keep the wood upright on your beds if you use 2 foot (or there abouts ) lengths off the tree branches and hammer one on the inside of the bed at one end and one on the outside at the other end and repeat that on all four sides it will keep the surrounds in place without having to use nails

If Lidl or Aldi are close to you should have gone there for compost and bark chip, less than half the price of B&Q etc. The top soil is used to top up a lawn or dig it in to rubbish soil in your garden or fill pots.

I finally saw the Mister! He seems quite handy to have around! 😉 Sorry about the bird house. We have some brash squirrels here, too, who will take almost anything apart if they like the bird food. We even bought a squirrel-proof bird feeder which - while lovely - was quite a waste of money as the squirrels figured it out. But yay for all the free wood chip! Looking GOOD!

  • @Wonkigardenandpets

Hi, Emma. I have an idea that I want to give you, what you do next is entirely up to you and what you think. If you stand closest to the fence, where you have the most shade, and look into your new plot. The big bed you have the closest if you extend it a little more to the right, in the same direction as you have the two composts, then you can have the path from the beginning of your plot down to the polytunnel and then you don't lose so much space. The huge bed you can then make into a brassica cage. The bed/ cage is then large enough for all your brassicas, you can have some stepping stones or a small path in it if you want. This is just a suggestion and I hope you understand what I mean, trying to explain as best I can, I'm not good at explaining things. Have a nice evening and i like your vlog.

Hi Emma. If you knock in some small bits of stick upright like pegs at either side of your wood on your raised beds it will keep them up. Great use of your spare twigs! I did it on my edging. So glad you got some wood chip! The bird feeder will definitely have been the squirrel that you just saw as you walked towards your plot. We have them at home and they've pinched bird food and all my tulip bulbs!

My beds aren’t proper ‘raised’ beds either (except the carrot bed which is two pallet collars tall filled with top soil and sand). I call my beds ‘edged’ beds, just to mark them out really, cos my brain works better like that.
Sorry about the bird feeder, it might be better hung in a tree, although squirrels can be real little buggers!!!

My parents used to get potted Christmas trees every year and plant them in our front garden after Christmas. Most of them died, but two of them got to about 30 feet tall before the council made us take them down because they were causing a hazard for passersby. 🤣 So be aware that that cute little Christmas tree won't stop growing once it's reached a proper Christmas tree size!

Wood chips and help on the same day? It’s like winning the lottery! I bought compost and worked at my plot Saturday (rain forecast for Sunday, so I knew I had to go). I am still planting garlic. It is my first time and I think I bought too much. I still have 6 heads to plant! I think a squirrel was digging in the beds where I planted garlic cloves. I can’t imagine they would taste good, so I don’t know why they are digging there. I think I would not put too much food in the feeder since it will all get eaten by those unruly bandits.
