  • The video has me explaining Two Different Spey Casting Styles. I've heard so many people say, thats not the way, this is the way. People who are good casters but only understand one way to teach fall into this trap and ultimately this is confusing for the beginner or student. There are many different styles of flycasting but in this Video if focus on Two Different Spey Casting Styles and although different the timing is much the same.

Hi Ian, so what’s the advantage or disadvantage of each style. Or which one is better suit for mid belly line in your opinion. Thanks

The question is a good one. The Torpedo method (TM) is more energy efficient. It’s safer in windy conditions. Because the caster is encouraged to keep the rod moving and at a more shallow trajectory, there is less potential for tailing loops. We can cast under overhanging branches. The traditional “Circle up” method is better when we are casting off a high bank with long grass because we can place the D Loop above the bank. The downside is wind. Any gust of wind when the rod is static and the DLoop is developing means a time when the angler is not in control at this point leading to failure in the anchor or the line becoming slack. Those are the main reasons. Personally I enjoy and do both casts but favour the TM.

@@IanGordonsalmonfishing Hi Ian, thanks for the clear explanation. I have a further question. With the Torpedo method, your rod sweeps back more shallow, and looks like your sweep stroke is much longer than the one in right side video. I sometimes see people intentionally lengthen their sweep stroke in order to get more energy to form the D loop but somehow they will turn their shoulder , create some hook. So I try to find the balance, shallow sweep with longer stroke but no that long to prevent turning my shoulder. So far still struggle a bit. Is this a problem for you?

The torpedo one is best for this. Its more dynamic.
