Oh... my ... god... When I opened this video I was so skeptical, I though "Pfff, come on, Chardash on contrabass? That's impossible! you gotta have fingers of titanium to do it". I've never been so wrong! And the second part! ON ONE STRING! I bet Paganini himself would applaud you - at least his violin was not 30 kg heavy! Lev, you are a true master. Thank you!

Vladimir Kornev Thank you Vladimir. Спасибо! I'm not the only one who is playing this piece on the double bass. There are other beautiful recordings of this music made by Roman Patkolo, Lauren Pierce and others. And you don’t need “to have a titanium fingers” to play this. Now there are light weight metal strings allowing to develop fast playing technique on the double bass.

Paganini also had a disease that made his tendons looser than average, which contributes to how fast one could play.

I really don't see why someone would mark this as fake, I mean, why would he go out of his way to learn the fingerlings for such a hard piece and play them out on camera and then just not make real sound? C'mon now, that just doesn't make sense, it's a genuine video that took effort to make, don't throw out someone's hard work like that.

    • @yirenchen6384

Exactly! He would just throw paintings or sheet music over it.

    • @gregprymicz9947

he filmed it. and recorded it two different times. what you're seeing is a video, with a seperate audio track dubbed. The reason is simply audio quality.

It seems like the recording and the camera are off. Try clapping, then when editing the video, just like up the peaks of the two channels (camera microphone and proper microphone) It will help make it line up more I guess if that's how you would like to call it.

The thing is that he did two different recordings of this piece however when the audio and live recording is actually played without the edits the coordination between the two audios would be out of sync because the one you see in the video is Lev doing a second recording of the Czardas, which is why it was edited to make sure to sync both recordings together. I mean there could have been a better job in editing it, but he gave it a lot of effort to do, and I respect him for that

Well, I am a violinist, not a bassist or cellist, but I can certainly see that your bowing technique is very real and very fluid. Vibrato, also real, and very nice technique as well as all the fingering and shifting. So, you have put in your hours and got your reward, a combination of admiration from the sane and bitter jealousy from the usual internet "I need to get a life brigade." You may have, for all I know, patched some of this together using technology. Anyone who doubts that this happens in classical music recording should watch the movie Pianomania and pay particular attention to the recording of the Bach Art of Fugue. The fact that some people seem to feel that nobody should be allowed to play or record classical music if they are not Leonid Kogin or Rostropovich or Arthur Rubinstein is just sort of pathetic. You can guess how far they got with their instrument, so they quit and live vicariously through the top of the top musicians and invest their time in bitter commentary rather than practice. Anyone who puts in huge love and effort and achieves a high level of musicianship is the winner, they get the thrill of felling the music go through them instead of being a mere listener. Bravo!

    • @DaveDexterMusic

I stitch together multiple takes of sessions recordings for the perfect result. Unless it's a live concert, it's all about the end result imo. I'd be surprised if Lev had to do much if any cutting from multiple takes, though. He's quite something.

I am a violinist, and people always say the violin is hard to master, but looking at this makes me think the double bass is much harder to master. I mean look at the aglity you must have to shift that quickly, and I have tried to play one and the strength you must have just to hold down on a string without it hurting and giving you calluses, is truly remarkable.

I've just listened to this track for the umpteenth time. I doubt that many bassists could play Czardas at this pace and on a single string without ending up in a fracture ward. Lev Weksler is a stunning musician and a very entertaining one. His runs alone are jaw-dropping and his passion and musical depth are a rare experience. It's nice that his twin brother helps out with the right hand! It would be almost scary to hear Lev team up with Vittorio Monti; what a double act. Thank you, Maestro.

Cameron Conley You are a very talented and refined musical critic, but, hopefully, your future critical research is different. Here is a little tip: This piece of music was written for violin and piano, but I, as an exception, play both parts on double bass using my own arrangement. I created this arrangement through trial and error at the audio recording session itself, by experimenting numerous times, recording and re-recording different parts of music, so this is not a "Live performance” in a musical competition, and I don't need to cover any “cuts and editing”. The professionals do it better, but I don't care.

Holy shit, this is really one of the best performances of this piece I've ever seen.
I've been a professional double bass player myself for about 36 years, so I know how difficult what you're doing is. Well done! Really excellent playing.
I only know one living bassist who can play it better, and that's Roman Patkolo.
