I disagree with him on having the doors opened to importation. Rather, import should be controlled in such a way that it does ruin local producers who already suffer competitive disadvantages. How do you expect Dangote Refinery to compate when they had to build their own power, roads, seaport, train local manpower overseas, and provide all auxiliary business support infrastructure to run a business. These are costs that the foreign competitors do not have to bother about because the infrastructure to support their businesses are already provided by the government and system. All they do is pay taxes and service fees. Dangote refinery having to provide all these things simply shoots up their cost of production which funnels down to the pricing for their products.
So, the government needs to find a balance to either continue to rely on import while the economy bleeds, or support local producers to develop the competence and scale to compete in the long run. This is what China has done very well. They know they didn't stand a chance against western competitors. So, the Chinese had to strategically control entry into their market at the initial stage to allow their local brands to develop the capacity to compete. Yes, the chinese consumers may suffer price disadvantage in the short-run because they would have had to pay a littel bit more for products produced locally, but in the long-run, we see they are better off as the Chinese companies are now able to hold their own and compete. In short, western governments feel threatened with the way the Chinese brands are advancing on the global market space. They fear their companies could lose grounds in the market place. You see what Huawei and BYD are doing in the telecom and electric vehicle sectors, right? That is what we call a startegic push to take over the market. Sensible governments support local brands to take on the market because this, in turn, supports the growth and development of their respective economies.
Why can't Tinubu put a call across to his peers in Africa, especially those closest to our borders and say: "guys, why buy products from the West, we have got Dangote Refinery to supply your petroleum products; we have got Innoson to supply you SUVs; we have got Proforce to supply you military wares." He should apply his diplomatic muscle to market Nigerian brands and companies, instead of allowing his men to demarket them.
We just need to be smart and tactical wth governance in Nigeria. God has blessed and positioned us to control the African market, but we are holding ourselves back and allowing the Chinese to run the game. Nigeria should be an industrial and manufacturing hub to feed the African continent with products. This is where the Dangote Refinery comes in. The refinery should be supported to feed the regional markets in West and Central Africa. Just sad that the government through one of its agencies is instead demarketing the refinery. We have dumb people in leadership positions in Nigeria.
I blame Dangote for choosing to invest in the oil sector. He could have left Nigeria to continue to suffer humiliation before the world, a leading crude oil producer that import all the oil products it consumess. He could simply left his funds with Blackrock, Fidelity or Vanguard asset managers and earn yields on them while vacationig in the Bahamas or Dubai. Now, see how fast he is aging because his whole life's work is on the line. If Dangote refinery fails, Dangote's finacial position would be irredeemably damaged. I hope is health stays good in the midst of his current travails.
Nigeria is such a mess. The problem is not leadership. It is followership who have choosen to tolerate the bad behaviour of the leadership.
With love from Texas, United States!

We watching from overseas. It's very sad to see what they are trying to do to Dangote. Your whole oil sector needs a reform because it's not working and it looks like this is done intentionally. Your President is suppose to investigate and fix loop holes, issues , etc, because this is your country's main resource.

The question is, does the Nigerian president know what his officials are doing in the oil industry in Nigeria? If not, he should find competent people to help him. Hire people like this guest, Dr Obiareri, to help run that oil industry. What amazes observers like us from other parts of the world is that Nigeria have so many talented individuals both in the Country and in the Diaspora, but they are not employed or encouraged in the administration of that country.

We have gotten to the point where impunity should be seriously punished . How the system will reverse itself I don’t know. There is need for 10,000 thousand persons to be removed not only from the system but from existence. Next 50,000 given life imprisonment without option of pardon and another 90,000 sentenced to minimum of 20 years as a starting point for installation of sanity.
