Love the camera angles and the details in cinematics they've put into this game! Only gripe is the lack of variation in the combat mechanics. The combat needs just a little bit more flash, i know it's gritty, just needs more depth. But all in all, this is an AMAZING game!!! Love it!!
Lmao 🤣 I remember playing the new god of war when it first came out, I played it on the hardest difficulty thinking it wouldn't be that hard since I played games like demon souls dark souls and bloodborne and let me tell you, that give me God of war setting with some of the hardest s*** I've ever tried to play in my life, the game was so hard until it become not enjoyable and you could not adjust the setting, and if you didn't beat the game on give me God of war you would have to start over, and my pride would not allow me to start over I would delete the game first, but somehow I manage to get all the way through the game and made it to the valkyrie Queen where my patience was truly test, and finally after 2 weeks of getting my ass kicked I was able to beat the queen and that was before Sony Santa Monica patch the Valkyries with that one hit Valhalla attack, but I can understand when you say your pride will not allow it.
Once I got the up light, up light, neutral heavy combo, the combat was completely broken as it auto staggered enemies for finishing moves that gave back health. Only the last boss was any sort of challenge after that. But yes, I super SUPER agree that aside from the combat, the game was great at story telling and atmosphere!
I seriously tried to make the combo system work but it just kept getting me killed while I attempted it. I wonder if it is any easier with a controller over keyboard and mouse.
Yeah it relies pretty heavily on the staggering combos. I don't know how I had the patience for the last boss on medium. My dude wouldn't block or parry anything and I died in about 2 seconds many times. I finally just figured out how to use all my projectiles and got lucky after I ran out
Personally I absolutely loved this game. Yes the combat was flawed as you mentioned, but I got used to it quickly. Overall, it was a really nice experience. Thanks for reviewing it.
Saw black and white samurai game so I bought it blind; the day after it came out.Heard nothing of it. I was immediately grabbed by the visuals and sound design. The story was fine. The supernatural twist was visually cool but I really want a reality based game. The gameplay was jagged and stiff. Serviceable...being generous there. Overall the price and style made my time worth it 👌 8/10 imo.
you gotta do thrusting attacks on the armored enemies. Or do any combo with a thrust and you can insta kill them with a finisher. Doesn't take that long
One samurai game I recommend you check out at some point is Sword of the Samurai. It's a very old game (MS-DOS era), and it's available through Steam and Good Old Games. I recommend picking up the GOG version, as GOG optimizes older games to run well on modern systems. It's only $5.99 + tax on GOG. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
The game became easy after i learned the light light heavy execute combo, almost broken as i could stun and execute practically all the enemies, except the bosses. I was playing on the Ronin difficulty.
I don't know how they managed to make the combat system both needlessly complex and dead simple at the same time. Seriously, I never use the combos; I just wait for parries and do light attacks because that's the most effective method. Even basic heavy attacks are totally worthless. Will finish it soon, but it feels more like an experiment than a full-fledged game.
I bought it on release day and played it for about an hour. Ended up somewhere in the chapter 2 forest, I think. I loved the aesthetics and I really wanna get back to it. The experience of the combat was very draining to my will to continue, though. I don't think bad combat is the end all be all, and I will get back to it and finish it. Maybe several playthroughs to get all the endings. But it's not something I can just pick up and play. It's a very much a game with a required mood and lately I haven't really had a moment to myself where I could just sit down and think 'time to play this energy drain of a game'. Appreciate the review. I definitely got the sense from what little I played that it was going to be one of those games where every second sentence out of a samurai character's mouth includes the word 'honour'.
I put your review in the description as well! Also I didn't mean to steal the same image from the game for the thumbnail I completely forgot that is the one you used 🙇🙇🙇
can't agree on the armoured guys, but i also noticed that the combos that say in their text that they are good against armour, actualy stun enemies so you can just onehit kill most of them. They are also weak to parry hits, though the game def wants you to time your hit as combos and parry hits seem to have a very narrow window that doesn't allow spam Edit: That doesn't fix the combat though, just makes you spam one of two combos for easy murdering of most foes. Especialy because you might not even get that combo if you don't kill the random guy that drops it in some random house
My problem was that if I tried to do the combos or types of attacks that worked against the armored enemies they would often hit me repeatedly while I tried haha.
I was just going to ask Shogunate if you played this game yet, but looks like you been playing this game all along. Anyways, for me, this game is a bit more of an "2D arcade flash game" in the action scenes, that you play on your web browser during lunch break. The story would have been great if they didn't add in "Super natural" stuff which kinda ruin the game story in a way, I mean if they wanted to add the supernatural, maybe they could make it as a "nightmare" sequence. The story is set in Edo but still have bandits... maybe the story is set right in the beginning of Tokugawa shogunate before Shimabara Rebellion? Around 1600-1640 Anyways they claim to take inspiration to Akira Kurosawa movies, even have an easter egg of 7 Samurai flag here and there. For me, it kinda reminds me of the 1960 Japanese cinema of "Violent chambara" movies a bit, anything by Tatsuya Nakadai or Shintaro Katsu One thing I liked about this game is the time period is a bit more accurate in the beginning of the Japanese town with the clothing
The glitches and the way they designed enemies makes this game borderline unplayable on harder difficulties it's a shame because it's actually a nice story
Loved this game. Very Kurosawa esque in terms of visuals. My only complaint is that it was extremely easy, and I beat it in Ronin. I’ll have to try Kensei difficulty. You gotta perform finishers to make the combat more fun, one I agree is that the game can be extremely unresponsive.
I'd love to see you do a review of Shigurui: Death Frenzy, Especially in regards to its authenticity in capturing the samurai mindset. I hardly see anyone review that anime that it almost feels obscure.
I like the black & white movie style feel of it but the game looks a little bit off I can't explain it or maybe that's just me. I played Ghost of Tsushima & I really liked it. I'll have to check this one out before getting it. Thanks for the review 👍🏻
Hey mr Shogunate, I just checked Ieyasu's Wikipedia page out of curiosity, apperantly he developed connections with new-spain (modern day mexico) while reigning as tairō for hideyoshi's son If you haven't done something about said subject, would you consider doing a video if you have time? Thanks!
Well, simply for backdoor power politics, until he had met a bunch of Dutch traders and an Englishman aboard the Liefde That is where, besides the capsizing of the San Diego years earlier, first the Toyotomi and then the Tokugawa began rooting out Catholic missionaries and foreign court advisers
@@shinsenshogun900 thanks! Although, the missionaries in Japan were Portuguese as far as I know, so wouldn't it make more sense for him to have connections with Brazil instead?
@@thesnowfox7262 Dear chap, there's always some way to contact Portuguese and Spanish missionaries You see, just as the Spanish has Mexico, both Iberian empires also have growing colonies in the East Indies, with Portugal focusing on India, Malaya, Macao, and the East Indies, & the Spanish relaying communications and trade with Azuchi-Momoyama jidai Japan through the Philippines (technically an administrative subject of the Mexican viceroyalty) In essence, both have, like the Dutch in the future, the means to influence and give consequences to late feudal Japan.
I really enjoyed it. The combat isn't great true. It really reminds me of onimusha: warlords. Only without tank controls. Maybe its my nostalgia for onimusha. But once I clued in that's what the gameplay is. I was sold.
oof, a game with a neat aesthetic and some other good point just brought down by combat that either doesn't work or gets broken by a couple combos. That's a real shame
I got this game for free on PSN and I enjoyed it for a while, but the combat really is so repetitive that I didn't bother to finish, maybe I'll go back to it on a lower difficulty and give it another shot
You get enough save points that I'm not sure why anyone has any difficulty with this game. Is the combat exceptional and layered? No. Is it wonky at times? Absolutely. But I wouldn't say it's entirely broken or at least I didn't have much trouble with it aside from assholes with spears..... fuck the guys with spears lol. This game is amazing and a breath of fresh air definitely and out of nowhere as I wasn't aware of it pre release. And I just finished Ghost of Tsushima recently so seeing this was awesome and I truly enjoy it.

Definitely a frustrating game to Platinum, glad I didn’t buy it and it was free on PS+ I think the style is great with the Black and White film effect but the combat is really bad that I agree with, it isn’t designed to play on the hardest difficulty, yet, they want you to play it on the hardest difficulty, then they want you to do all the bosses except for first one when Hiroki is a child without being hit ( best saved for easy ), they want you do 1 chapter without using a save point and not die ( recommend chapter 2 ) and there is the mode when you have one hit kills on enemies but also one kill on you too and this excludes the bosses and you have no health bar just a stamina bar. I got the Platinum but was very frustrating, sad because it was beautiful aesthetically, be nice to see more monochrome style games , but they messed up on the combat, it sucks. Plus there is no chapter select either, forcing you to play the game again if you missed collectibles.
This seems like the perfect example with what's wrong with a lot of current game design. The designers put too much emphasis on making the game look visually striking, but don't invest enough time on the gameplay. The graphics look pretty, but the combat looks stiff and awkward.
I completed the game on Ronin difficulty (second hardest difficulty), I didn´t know the combat was so bad, for half the game it didn´t give much trouble, but I was already too far in the game to change the difficulty to easy (yeah I´m kinda stubborn) so it took me way to much time to beat it, I didn´t really enjoy it and the final boss was so cheap (100% artificial difficulty) that once I finish the game on Ronin, I unistaled the game right away.
difficult in a "this doesn't seem like the developers completed it" sort of way sounds exactly like elden ring and dark souls to me, specially when you add the words extremely repetitive to it xD
how are honor, loyalty, and bushido "western samurai tropes" bushido is literally a way of life for samurai and honor and loyalty are two things every samurai prized above all else. thats why they would off themselves when they failed their leaders. it was a stain on their honor.
