- Orbert Davis is the co-founder, music director, composer and orchestrator for the Chicago jazz Philharmonic, a 65 piece orchestra.
In this video he talks about Thomas Gunther’s music preparation work for him and the orchestra.
Thomas has prepared all the music that Orbert has composed and arranged for the orchestra in the past 20 years. Orbert and Thomas work closely together the minute Orbert starts composing/arranging. Thomas knows from experience that making the music look perfect on page is a prerequisite for a successful performance.
You see, every minute of rehearsal time cost a lot of money, so it is important that the musicians are presented with beautifully written parts.
Although Thomas’ real passion is producing, composing, arranging, and performing music himself, working for the orchestra has been a badge of honor for him. He told Orbert at the beginning that he would even do the work for free should he not be able to pay him, because he wanted Orbert to succeed no matter the cost. (Of course he always got compensated handsomely).
This resulted in a beautiful 20 year and beyond lasting working relationship as well as a deep friendship that both man are very proud of.
