Spot on Russ. I am a huge fan of Hardkernel's designs, and they have given me some of the best times tinkering in the last few years. I am one of those that has a personal project to build my own handheld distribution compiling almost everything from scratch, so I hadn't realized how many things we take for granted are a big no for a regular user. I appreciate how you have highlighted the ethos of the company, as it is one of the most appealing points for me. The fact that they also sell it as cheap as they can is another. Having said all this, I hope one day they decide to put a bit more of money on mainstream features like the buttons, controllers, shells, etc, that will surely get some traction from other community developers.
I totally agree, many of the handheld community developers only choose to work on the devices they personally use and enjoy. So the more enjoyable they make the device, the more apt the devs will be to work on it!
Thanks for the review Russ. It's a hard device to make a case for as it stands. I'm not ruling out getting one to tinker with, but I'll wait and see how the firmware situation turns out.
Wow, im watching other reviews of yours trying to decide which handheld device to buy, then you drop this vid. Consistent content, new subscriber achieved!
I ordered the RG552, should be here this week. The community support has greatly changed the device and I'm willing to accept its limitations and shortcomings as there seems to be workarounds for the missing 5ghz wifi and Bluetooth with the dongle for Android. Not to mention both Linux and Android share the same games sdcard, so you can get the best of both OS's.
When you use Android, you can put an extra SD with games in slot 1. The 552 can read both slots and you could upgrade to 2 terabyte (2× 1 Terabyte SD cards). Lol Edit: I use Black Seraph Android 9, don't know if this works with the stock Android version.

@retrogamecorps How does it compare to other handhelds with the same performance or price range now that it can be bought for 55$?
I really appreciate your overview of the handheld landscape, Russ. I recently picked up my Miyoo Mini (after your stock alert) and ended up selling my RP2+ because the Mini is so much better for my public transport commute and pockets. I am trying to figure out if I want to replace the RP2+ with an RP3, something more middle of the road like an Odin Lite, or go straight for the Steam Deck for couch gaming after some budget/saving (and wife negotiations). I really appreciate your reviews and they truly do help in decisionmaking. I am leaning towards the RP3 to tap into the Dreamcast generation/Streaming/Android gaming, then pick up a Steam Deck down the line to target the Gamecube/PS2/Wii generation that I missed out on. I would love to hear if you have a different suggestion!
@Vectpoli True, but the deck does EVERYTHING, including my massive steam library. Plus now that I have the RP3+, it can do more than I expected. So an Odin, while awesome, wouldn't be a big enough performance bump to justify to my wife haha.... maybe someday a Steam Deck could be in the picture. But the RP3+ is fantastic for now!
@Vectpoli Odin isn't a bad choice though! One of my buddies wants to get a handheld to play PS2 and I'm telling him to go for an Odin. It's great value, if only they could figure out how to make and ship them faster.
let's see if it's really "ultra" edit: it isn't lmao they nearly didn't do any changes compared to super, that's a bummer. also the performance is underwhelmimg for me, as it seems the chip is more powerful than the ultra makes it to be
Although the Odroid Go Ultra might not be a great gaming platform, it looks like it can run my Software Defined Radio (SDR). The Linux program GQRX runs on most Linux devices, and it won’t tie up my laptop computer. I don’t need Wi-Fi or touch screen to run it. The screen is big enough to see to use it and the CPU is more powerful than the Raspberry Pi 4 which barely runs at speed. The gaming would be a extra icing on the cake.
Great review, glad I skipped this one. Clones may be neat, but I'm not convinced we'll see any. It is pretty cool seeing this SOC in a handheld though! - Stubbs
I am realising at the end of watching this video that Powkiddy came up with the RGB10 Max and Max 2 from cloning this, which are great devices. I’ll “wait for the clone” 😊
I was just looking into if ROCKNIX could do 3DS emulation, pretty much just to play 3D Classics Kirby's Adventure, which I wanna believe is easier to run than most 3DS games, but I don't actually know. I saw they ship Lime3DS on their images for S922X devices but nothing else, then went looking into which devices had that chip. I saw the ODROID Go Ultra was like half the price (currently $55) of the PowKiddy RGB10 Max 3 Pro (currently $115). I wonder how hard it is to just slip Lime3DS into an existing ROCKNIX install to see how it runs on my RG353M. No stick clicks is a problem... That's how I'm used to getting into the Retroarch menu. I'm also worried the sticks aren't Hall effect since the site didn't say so. Sounds like the dpad is lacking too. I guess this one is a pass. I wonder if Anbernic will make anything with this chip. I could see someone modding the sticks and dpad, but without pre-existing routing on the PCB for the stick click buttons I don't know if you could easily add them. Would still be interested in you revisiting this now and showing off ROCKNIX on it and giving your thoughts again.
Why is it so hard for manufacturers to position two stereo speakers properly, not on the back side, not on the bottom corner where your hands obstruct...
Sadly, the GPIO interface has been completely removed from the board, and it's unclear whether or not it's even supported this time around. Granted, I never actually did anything with the GPIO on the OGA/OGS, but it's a little disappointing to know that it's just completely absent this time around. Writ large the device is just a bit disappointing.
Great review as usual. I can see Russ struggled to list sufficient "likes" factors in the summary section though (Is Dev/Tinker friendly really a thing for most users?).
He doesn't recommend the OGU as an everyday device (firmware/ergonomics) but in his Retroid Pocket 3 video he was very positive about it so I think that's the answer to your question
Love when you upload. Is there any way you could do a video of android game performance on the rg353p? Me and some others wanted to know if it will play max payne, jedi knights 3, doom 3, half-life 2, etc...
They should start going with the old Saturn model 2 D-pad. STILL the best D-pad ever made. It's not comfortable to press BETWEEN directions on the pad. 8-directional is better than 4! DUH!
Think the issue with these devices now is that you probably already have a device. Able to play the game you regularly play and no reason to buy something else. Or you are saving up or waiting to buy a steam deck. It's the main issue of these devices flooding the market but having the same basic hardware.
The market is really starting to feel quite cluttered … I hope this doesn’t result in a growing slew of less than stellar offerings. While the handheld market has seemed to be pushing the envelope with some sort of innovation, I fear this kind of effort might mark many offerings moving forward.
Man, as someone whose first handheld was an OGS, this kind of bums me out. Still no built in WiFi? Still no clickable sticks? That sucks. Well I've got a SteamDeck and an Odin Pro, so I guess this is a hard pass for me.
B-b-but I thought power was the only thing that mattered? That's what I was told by people shitting on my favorite handhelds because they're "overpriced"... it's almost like the actual experience of playing on something is much more than the guts inside it, almost like build quality and feel matters.
the quality of the controls and the hardware in general don't seem so advanced to me, the retroid pocket 3s and 3s + that is coming is much more interesting for me and much better built! if only the retroid decided to put all the spare parts on the site would be very welcome to us customers of the company. It's scandalous not to supply spare parts to customers and force them to have to buy the product again in case some components are damaged !!
Hmmm ONLY Amlogic S922? I'm really curious since Odroid was already a capable console on the old but generationally identical rockchip .But the problem is the technological state of emulation ( N64) and on PS2 or Gamecube it won't have enough performance in my opinion anyway :/
I hate to dump on Odroid, but this is a hard pass. It is a niche product made for people who like to tinker and have hours to devout to try and get the most out of the device. Even then you will still be stuck with not great controls which maybe some youtubers will replace, but who has the time and money to do that. Sorry Odoid, but fewer and fewer people are willing to put up with these DIY kit loke handhelds than even a couple of years ago.
"Riiiiiiiidge Racer. Remember that one?" -Some dorky Sony exec dork dorking out at E3 Yeah, dad, i remember Ridge Racer, now shut up, you drank too much, and mom left us. I'm hungry.
I roll my eyes and go "nope" as soon as I hear theres no L3 and R3 by clicking down the thumbsticks. Instant no buy for me. Though most things are now I have a steam deck lmao
This is an excellent chip but it's a bit late to throw in a hand held now since the RK 3588 is available. Rather wait for a hand held with the latter which just destroys the S922X in performance.
I bought an android box several years ago with the S922X chip for Emuelec and shortly after that I found that the prevailing sentiment around it was that development had been abandoned and there'd be little if not NO further work done on it by the Coreelec team that was making a lot of the big moves for TV box emulators because of a lack of support from the chip maker. Their disdain at the time was so serious that I practically stopped using the device with any hope of updates. Although to be fair my TV box seems to be further along than this device, but even then the reaction to the chip makes me wonder if "waiting for a clone" is even something viable.
It doesn't seem like they progressed much since, seems dated to me. I dunno, if this came out a year ago I'm sure it would sell like hotcakes but it seems out of time right now. Big screen borders, small dpad, no analog shoulder buttons, no L3/R3... it just seems I dunno.. Speaker on the back? It seems like a device for collectors, sure it's powerful but like.. the lack of everything else kinda negates the power. It's just you gotta put so much time and effort into this to make it usable.. Seems more trouble than it's worth. Great vid! But huge pass for me.
Correction on the tech specs: the big cores on S922X are A73, not A75.
@@fcuk_x almost done ✅

Granted, I never actually did anything with the GPIO on the OGA/OGS, but it's a little disappointing to know that it's just completely absent this time around. Writ large the device is just a bit disappointing.

Hey Russ! Any plans on reviewing the Windows Dev Kit 2023 aka "Project Volterra"?
Can I pay you for a SD card loaded with roms setup for a specific device? Like for a steam deck or a ayn Odin?
Great review as usual. I can see Russ struggled to list sufficient "likes" factors in the summary section though (Is Dev/Tinker friendly really a thing for most users?).
Since it's simaller price, do you perfer the Odroid Go Ultra or the Retroid Pocket 3
He doesn't recommend the OGU as an everyday device (firmware/ergonomics) but in his Retroid Pocket 3 video he was very positive about it so I think that's the answer to your question
With shipping its not a smaller price
Retroid Pocket 3 is waaaay better and similar price
Love when you upload. Is there any way you could do a video of android game performance on the rg353p? Me and some others wanted to know if it will play max payne, jedi knights 3, doom 3, half-life 2, etc...
They should start going with the old Saturn model 2 D-pad. STILL the best D-pad ever made. It's not comfortable to press BETWEEN directions on the pad. 8-directional is better than 4! DUH!
Thinking about getting this and overclocking it to 3Ghz.
Looks like Taki Udon was right when he predicted that "the RK3326 is the end boss that cannot be defeated".
@@Pridetoons It basically means that the OGU has failed to surpass the OGA/OGS despite its more powerful chipset.
If you box it down is it quick?
Hey Russ, can you make a windows on steam deck tutorial?
dude this the new retro pocket 3 colors LAWL 🤣😂😅
I love my ultra for price. 😊
Can you install twister os on odroif go ultra?
My guy delivered
Waiting for Powkiddy X18s Ultra Black review Thanks
It should be arriving this week!
@@RetroGameCorps already have an x18s but i am willing to buy after your review🙂
Rocknix has support for this device rn
Will this console play metal gear solid?
I hate to dump on Odroid, but this is a hard pass. It is a niche product made for people who like to tinker and have hours to devout to try and get the most out of the device. Even then you will still be stuck with not great controls which maybe some youtubers will replace, but who has the time and money to do that.
Sorry Odoid, but fewer and fewer people are willing to put up with these DIY kit loke handhelds than even a couple of years ago.
4:39 if they would have implemented USB PD this wouldn't be necessary. smh
Well, the Odroid has an audience and that's great, I have no interest in it. Waiting for the specs of the Anbernic RG505 and the Powkiddy X28.
If they did this in 7" maybe 😁👍.
That would ofcourse bring the price up.
Not stock software though.
With an official Batocera build too.
Got a notification you made a reply here Jono, but looks like either you deleted it, or yt auto deleted it for some reason.
@@fonzitheman It's ok. I deleted it!

@@Pridetoons Thanks!
Their screen bezel remains Steam Deck level.
thank you :-)
Bro that bezel is redunculous
"Riiiiiiiidge Racer. Remember that one?"
-Some dorky Sony exec dork dorking out at E3
Yeah, dad, i remember Ridge Racer, now shut up, you drank too much, and mom left us.
It's DOA for me, no bluetooth or wireless, under performance, crappy triggers, no L3 or R3, pretty dire for the price point......Next!
The steam deck looks comically large next to the Odroid lol
I bought an android box several years ago with the S922X chip for Emuelec and shortly after that I found that the prevailing sentiment around it was that development had been abandoned and there'd be little if not NO further work done on it by the Coreelec team that was making a lot of the big moves for TV box emulators because of a lack of support from the chip maker. Their disdain at the time was so serious that I practically stopped using the device with any hope of updates. Although to be fair my TV box seems to be further along than this device, but even then the reaction to the chip makes me wonder if "waiting for a clone" is even something viable.
The audacity of Odriod releasing a handheld with inferior d pad and buttons is ridiculous no excuse for that
ODROID still thinks its 2 years ago when people would but aftermarket parts for their terible designs. No excuse foe these terrible designs these day.
Let’s just face it, should the wonderful community waste their time with optimization for this device. The answer I think though, is no.
At least, hardkernel kept the price low. Look at anbernic, the price is so hard. I will never buy any anbernic products.
Wow so there's pretty much no reason to get this over a Retroid Pocket 3.....
It seems they did everything wrong with this one, it's sad because i like hardkernell
I can"t believe they're actually releasing a device that sketchy I literally see no reason for anyone to buy something like that
The price with shipping is why I didn't buy one
