in my opinion this is the best recording of this song, better then the studio version i understand the feist like vocal affect he's going for on the studio version, but his voice really comes through well here and has a kind of rawness to it that sells the emotional longing of the theme of the song. i also think that the drum solo and synth dischord break down is better then the cello from original studio version. the studio version is a bit over produced, this is elegant and restrained and conveys the longing of the theme of the song very well. a longing for a simpler time reflected by the simplicity of the arrangement. it also comes across more funky, i think this is because the bass is louder and the drums have less treble then in the studio version, and the way its funky also serves the theme of the song, it moves you, both physically and emotionally. it emulates how we gotta keep moving and keep getting older even though we long for a time when we were children. all the pieces are less muffled by weird distortion affects. i think the muffling was him trying to convey how long ago the memories are, but the EMOTIONS about the memories are not long ago, they are right now, and they are painful and sharp, so i think its better that the instruments are sharp and pop.
I also feel that their 'over-produced' studio songs just don't have the "same quality" as the live version. I first met the band with Loretta, but once I started hearing live versions of his songs, I was sad he didn't have a live album, for example.
It's 2023 and I keep coming back. Thank you ❤
