- The new parts in the 0.23.5 expansion now make it possible to make some very minimal rockets:
2 Parts to Orbit
3 Parts to Minmus
4 Parts.... to Anywhere (but you might not get back).
Damn you Scott. I can barely get out of the atmosphere with any rocket. hahah
I got a very good way to get up to Jool with almost only Solid fuel
The rocket is even quite small :3
+Pac0 Master Hazardish went to Laythe and back with only SRB's. And no parachutes.
protostar 777 Neat
I never really tried to get my ships backs.
I went to Minmus and back... in a 129-part rocket.
Maybe the six-way Aspargus staging is unnecessary though...
yeah
Thats it
Yep
"Every thrust counts." -Scott Manley. 2014
I will not matter much, but you could also have removed the monopropellant from the capsule to reduce dry mass. It only gives you an extra 10.6 m/s (assuming only vacuum Isp) but an easy way to get a bit more delta-v is always good.
Very good point sir, I had not thought of this.
When ever I watch your videos it makes my efforts in KSP seem completely inadequate
FemJeb. KSP's answer to Mass Effect's FemShep.
Nice to see you take on this kind of challenge also once in a while! Always inspiring =)
You've got to be kidding me, he actually did it!? You, Scott, are unquestionably with the greatest of virtual space exploration!
These type of videos were always my favorites of the ones you post.
I love the magnificent trio textures by the Renaissance Package. The updated config file lines there make Jeb, Bob and Bill have their own unique skin at all times.
I saw the title and I thought to myself, well it's time for Scott to show us again that we will never reach his skill.
Back in 0.23 a five part craft and a whole lotta luck got my Kerbal safely to Laythe, using the "blow up the empty tanks with an engine" tactic. You can disable fuel flow from tanks in the VAB so there's no pumping shenanigans required.
If you do it that way it can be hard to control as the extra mass causes the stack to flex, so I found it more reliable to use pumping. Also it would be a lot easier if you could enable/disable fuel flow with action groups.
Scott Manley
I used the pumping strategy for a while because I didn't even know you COULD disable flow. I found it was fairly easy to disable the upper tank, activate both engines (top stage: Lander can, T800 tank, LV-N. Bottom stage: Jumbo64 tank, Skipper) and the upper engine wouldn't fire with the fuel flow disabled.
Once the lower stage was totally burnt out, action group to disable the lower engine and activate the fuel flow (two quick clicks) and burn it off.
Now that there's a single tank+engine part, that becomes 4 parts to anywhere (with safe landing if there's an atmosphere to brake with!)
I think you definitely live up to what I said on your 5 part rocket video! You are truly the greatest KSP player ever!
Moar like this pliz.
Also, stop being shy and post more of your very early stuff in your ending links. That stuff is mostly great and seeing you attempt hard things with few tools is highly entertaining in retrospect.
He just rendevouzed.... WITH A KERMAN, awesome job dude.
It's even more of a challange, because you have to carry around jebediahs breasts, which provide extra weight.
But more bouyancy
Lance Elliott
could you like... change your profile picture? It's worse then a pony profile picture, seriously...
Exima
Do you even yiff?
Exima
It's okay to not like things, but dooon't! Be! A! Dick! About it!
Lance Elliott who's boobs?
Ah, Abyssal Lurker. Glad you mentioned him; he's pretty darn good at KSP.
He is indeed an inspiration to us all.
11:39 "OK, I have a few seconds of fuel, but at full thrust it wont last long"
;)
Jeb Kerman in drag - yet another thing I never could have imagined.
And that is how you perform a hardware-assisted lithobraking maneuver while being able to keep a straight face while describing it.
Omg! You guy are KSP genius! Ive been playomg ksp for years but never got that accuracy
My rocket to Minmus (and back) took around 80 parts and I still think that's my greatest achievment in KSP playthrough...but I am not Scott Manley
My old 140 parts design could barely make it to the Mun...
metalcollection1 Bigger is not always better. Scott manley has a very informative video on the basics of rocket science.
Basically, at each stage, your rocket has to be able to lift more than it weighs (except for the last stage, because hopefully you'll already be out of the atmosphere, and into an orbit)
I know bigger is not better. I've got optimal design for close0to-Kerbin flights but it's still "huge" compared to what Scott does. And I don't like tutorials - only watched one for orbiting and landing. I want to do something by my own - that's the challenge :)
Nate Ralosky MOAR BOOSTAAARRS!!!
"Every thrust counts here."
-Scott Manley
This spacecraft definitely gets the "certified badass" award.
You know, I really missed these general challenges instead of Interstellar Quest and the like. Something cool and standing on its own - awesome!
that ground scatter as you come through the clouds looked like water droplets to me at first :P
Hey Scott, I have a challenge for you:
With the recent buffs of the Ion engines, the Kerbal engineers have discovered a way to give them 4x more thrust at 4x less juice, making them 16x more powerful than their previous counterparts. With this improved technology, build a ship that can exit kerbin's atmosphere and reach a stable orbit
I think this will be an interesting challenge, both because Ion engines are still very weak in their thrust-to-weight ratio, but also to satisfy the power requirements, numerous solar panels are required, and only one type of solar panel resists shattering in Kerbin's atmosphere.
I tried this, and was able to achieve it on the third try. And with plenty of fuel to spare as well. Ion engines are truely the most efficient engines (besides plasma engines, of course)
I'm honestly curious how you actually succeeded. I've played around with it, but the best craft I can make with enough dV has a TWR of around 0.4, which tops out around 21000m doing 400 m/s. At that point it lacks the thrust to accelerate faster and maintain altitude.
Are you using FAR or is there some additional trick I'm missing.
*claps slowly for approximately 30 minutes*
Some of the highest efficiency work I've ever seen. bonus points for landing damn close to the ksc
Sounds kinda like Scott embedded the warp drive sound from Star Trek into the background of the video...I like it.
That was the best landing I have ever seen!
At 13:06 I thought those trees were moisture on the screen from going through the clouds... It would be pretty cool if they added that.
That lander can is just really squishy. Almost any other capsule would have survived that first landing, and if Jeb had exited the capsule the first time, she would have, too.
@ 13:45 You could adapt some rock climbing terms to help in such situations. On-sight for one-shot, no reloading missions; Flash or flashing a mission is when you have to reload, like you did on this mission; Redpoint is for when you have to start over from the launch pad and Pinkpoint is for when you have to start over _and_ reload.
Wiki:Glossary of climbing terms
If you emptied the 5 extra mono propellant from the capsule in the VAB you would have had a slightly lighter rocket and that means more deltaV
Holy shit that skill manley you are the best in ksp
Incredible and entertaining.
Not as spectacular as your 5 parts to Gilly though!
That landing was incredible.
That Kerbodyne engine is the epitome of OP....
I love it when things go pear shaped! ♥
Scott, please don't touch me down, safely...
I'm so proud of you, random youtuber I found somehow!
Flo Rian You don't find Scott Manley... Scott Manley finds you and teaches you...
iam over the moon they got there kicker start money for the ISEE-3 solar probe...space archaeology Rocks !! thanks every one who chipped in
.and thanks Scott that was an epic mission
no way u did this! :D still trying to get a working space station into orbit :D
Getting into an orbit with the jetpack? I know this is a tiny world he is on, but wow
Got a tip for Scott, and indeed anyone doing these types of missions, use the tweakables to remove the monopropellent from the capsule, so as to lessen the weight, as currently kerbals do not actually use said monopropellant on eva, and even if they did, i would recommend dropping from 15 units to 5. this may seem like a small change but it can be give you many 10s of m/s of delta-v
I don't even get to moon with a rocket double as big as that one
i always say simpler is better
MultiGameLP's I've found ignoring the orange tanks and building with the thinner tanks gets me as far as Jool where as the thicker tanks seem to keep me stuck within Duna targets.
Kallen Dracovitch i once made a laythe lander made out of fully orange tanks it could land on laythe take of get to duna land and make it to eve and then needed a new ship to get the kerbals of eve XD
Its easier to get to Minmus than the Mun. I know its counter-intuitive but you only need a fraction of the delta-V to land due to Minmus' low gravity, and I guess you need less to get back due to the low orbital velocity above Kerbin :P I _think_ that's why Scott Manley recommends it for beginners
MultiGameLP's Nice XD I play with so many mods that getting Kerbals out that far is usually left to space station sized shuttles at this point.
You could probably do this with a two part rocket: seat + LRB.
But a seat has no torque.
Scott Manley
I didn't say it would be easy. But with some careful planning of orbits you could minimize turning outside of burns. Worst case you'll have to turn by pushing it.
BosonCollider True, I will have to do some math.
***** Math*
@@scottmanley AAHH! Math!
Scott, do you know when i'll really be impressed? when you show us something you actualy CAN'T do :D
That was the first time I have seen a total vehicle lithobreak maneuver. I am surprised Jebediah survived.
Ive missed these challenges. I would love to see these at a regular interval. :) they spice things up a bit.
The KSP Macgyver show!. its a shame there isnt a kerbal named MacGyver.
Kerbal Krossdressing
That mission was absolutely crazy. xD
Also, that engine is crazy good. It doesn't really seem to have any drawbacks. Light for its size, MAD thrust and the Isp is almost on par with the 909 engine.Technically speaking (pun intended) that engine is engineering porn.
Yeah it really seems op
I've missed these sort of videos. I love KSP interstellar and other series type videos, but the one off "do a random challenge in KSP" is something you haven't done in a little while... and I suppose it can take some of the monotony of 20hour burns that KSP Interstellar turns into occasionally :)
Just Brilliant Mr Manley!!
Once, I got a flyby with the mun with a craft that I only intended to get into orbit, I was so proud. But in comparison, that feat of mine was nothing. D:
I was watching the video full screen and I got really confused for a second at that last part when you were descending through the clouds because I mistook ground scatter for condensed vapor or rain on the "camera" glass and I was all like "wtf there is a mod even for that!?!?!".
HOLY SHIT MANLEY... THAT WAS AN EPIC EVA! XD
If I had to go into space and Scott Manly built my rocket, i'm not sure if i should feel safe or worry about me exploding.
Awesome vid Scott!
LOL... That landing eva though lol...
The radar altimeter man!
space travel a la "we have no budget screw safety measures."
I think Jezzadia would be a good name for the remapped kerbal skin.
Awesome landing! :D
congrats Scott
next video: to the moon without a rocket.
I know its incredibly minimal, but couldn't you have emptied the mono-propellant from the lander can to save a few tiny extra units of weight?
You could, but that would require RCS thrusters, exceeding the 3-parts.
SuperSMT No, I mean empty the tank while in the VAB. You can do that you know, change fuel levels and such by right clicking on the tanks.
ah i never tried that a 3 part rocket before also didnt think that engine and fuel tank would make it to orbit by it self
Jeb is the best transgender cross dressing astronaut there ever was
If you're a trans cross dresser... You're either a transwoman in men's clothes or a transman in women's clothes. . . TIL every trans person has been a cross dresser for part of their life.
Jade Black
but Jebidiah and jebidiana have the same clothes...
he is also the ONLY trans astronaut
Hey Scott,
Wanted to leave a comment hoping you'd see it and consider an idea of mine. Your videos, particularly your knowledge and quality of your videos in general, are the only ones I can trust to teach me anything considering KSP. For a game that's already picking up a lot of "steam" (see what I did there?), it's important to have youtubers like you keeping up with things, and seeing as how this game is shaping up to be similar to minecraft in the aspect of mods and the modding community, and how your knowledge of these mods seems to be pretty vast, I'm already describing you to my friends as the direwolf20 of KSP.
That said, my idea/suggestion was to maybe create tutorials for some of the more promising mods out there. I've downloaded a few that seem like they will be amazing (either when I reach their full-potential in career mode or a few months more of updates), yet there is very little written on how to use these mods accurately (StationScience and ISP especially, though I'm attempting to learn ISP through your "warp" playlist). All I'm saying is that it would be great to be able to come here and watch a quick 20-30 min tutorial on how to use something like mechjeb for the people with little background in the astrophysics field and learn a thing or two rather than read a bunch of guides.
Anyways, that's my thought, hopefully you'll start something like this sooner or later. Again, thanks for the uploads and especially for the career mode tutorial for beginners, just finished my first eve landing and venture back last night :D
nice precise mission :)
well, the crash wasnt a real crash - it was only a "mindsimulation" of Mrs. Jeb ;)
That TWA Flight was actually shot down. Its been confirmed, But vapor in the fuel tanks are indeed bad.
Was that a Battlestar Galactica reference I spotted at 13:35?
you could save the dV for circularizing and fly directly to minmus and maybe land there
Jebediah is sitting in a tin can orbiting the Mun on my latest save with zero fuel. He was able to transmit enough science to make it kind of worth it, but now I'm despairing on how to get him back... I have tried matching orbits with a remote controlled spacecraft but for some reason I got a really weird elliptical orbit (Well, not so weird actually, I was fiddling around with a solid state booster stack rocket just to see if I could get it to the Mun with some science stuff and only one liquid stage, it did, but came in at such an odd angle I had to burn what little fuel I had left to get into any kind of orbit and not end up in tiny bits on the surface...) which is tilted in respect to Kerbin, and I have absolutely no idea how to match it without wasting all my fuel.
It makes me feel that little bit more Manley that I too like to save fuel using the Mun as an acceleration/braking device. The big difference is I struggle with powered landing anything anywhere. This is why I bypass Minmus and have all my fun on Duna. I have landed on Minmus quite a few times, but I'm not good at it. Done Mun before too, but with a lot less success.
Epic final. Jebediah epic :D
Nice landing. :)
Scott Manley Hey wha do u think about the X-Rebirth 2.0 Update?
How about playing the game some time :)
I've been obsessed with Elite: Dangerous, but I'll give X-Rebirth another chance.
Scott Manley Would be great to know if they've patched the game enough to give it a second spin!
Scott Manley
Hey, Scott. Are you planning to do a series about Elite Beta? That would be great.
Scott Manley Please do, I reviewed it and hated just about everything about it. Would be very nice to know if they actually fixed anything, or indeed even finished the game!
+FreakGaming X-Stillbirth :(
6:31:
Space mater!
Ya know? from cars? EH?
lol
Pretty creative title on this video: Minimal Minmus Mission. Not sure if that was intentional or not. :P
Thanks
What is the least amount of RCF needed to land on minmus and return to kerbin surface. Once in a 80km circular orbit around kerbin Scott do you now?
You are the KSP God.
I've just had a new idea for a challenge!
To Duna and back ... with RCS!
Only you Scott!
Hey since the moon irl is moving away, Elon could bring it back by doing a bunch of gravity assists
This guy is a genius. ADMIT IT HATERS!
Harrison Adler People don't hate Scott Manley...
scott dosnt have any haters
Scott could have made the cheapest space program if only he was a rocket designer in NASA :D
*first see the title No........*continue watching....f#cking................*gravity assist locked in.............way..............FML
that's so cool
Matthew karr just did the mun and back with 3 parts.
2 parts rocket to the orbit around sun ( bigest solid rocket booster+ crew container or robotic part ( but no go back)
epic landing
Scott had a video where he explained the ferram aerospace analysis tools. Could someone post a link to it because I can't seem to find it anymore?
Hello Scott. Quick question for you. I'm attempting my first orbit/landing (depending on fuel) of minmus. I'm on Xbox one however hopefully you could still give me a couple tips and tricks. I can never seem to get a minmus encounter when I'm creating the maneuver while in orbit over kerbin. No matter how I tweak the maneuver I can't seem to get an encounter.
Has this happened to you? If so, any tips you could give me? Love your videos. They've been a huge help so far!
Thanks!
- Kevin
Kevin Enge Im not Scott but I recommend first of all not using maneuver nodes. They are hard to do if your a beginner. And second, once your apaopsis is Lined up with minimus trajectory, just keep orbiting till you get an encounter. It takes a while to do, but it works!
Could you do a video explaining how the real life asteroid capture mission is going to get an asteroid into lunar orbit?
And then there's me who can't even get to the mun with a gigantic rocket... :|
But well, he planned and did it like it was a real mission...
KSP Redditer's have found that if you EVA out onto a ladder, and then retract the ladder with the kerbal on it, it will release the kerbal with 0 velocity. Using this trick you can survive more crashes
I know how to calculate delta v for one engine, but what do you do if you have stages and multiple rockets firing at once?
Well, that's complicated.....
Yeah, I tried researching it and just gave up. Thanks for replying. Cool videos by the way, keep it up!
try to land on Bop, but the only thust allowed is stock ion engines NO EVA!
Scott, if the whole Jeb being a girl thing bothers you (it appears to, but maybe I'm misinterpreting), look through the Texture Replacer and Pimp My Kerbals mod folders. There should be custom, unique head/suit textures for Bill, Bob, and Jeb and the readmes have instructions on how to install them.
