Great reaction and you answered my question with wisdom and empathy. Its become all too common for folks to dehumanize each other by manipulating statistics and zooming in and out with their perspectives. As a vet and a southerner, this song really moves me in a deep way...not only in a historical sense but a personal one. Its a reminder of how service and obligation is shouldered by each individual. Like you pointed out, sometimes we have to sacrifice all to go fight a war we may not even want or believe in. Too be hated and ridiculed in your own country for that time in history is callous and without merit. Today, certain groups want to tear down statues of my heroes, flags of our history...America's history...not just the south. This is saddening that many believe that these heroes have to be shamed for other groups to gain esteem. The main point in asking your thoughts of the song was to see if the human perspective of the song was strong enough to displace the political one to someone that may not have a vested interest. When I requested this, I hadn't known you that long. Today, I would have already known that answer and you expressed very well in your reaction. Thanks for being who you are and having the desire to make the world a better place by using whatever you have available to you!
@David Emswiler Thank you for your insightful and humbling post, as always. I don't know if it's an age thing, or just following my own path rather than some version of groupthink, but the longer I live the more I see how hard life is---on everybody. If folks would engage in thoughtful discourse, which involves trying to understand where someone else is coming from, we'd all get along a lot better. Music has a way of cutting through some of the bullshit and revealing the heart of a people and the heart of a person, and for those who listen there's a lot to learn. Same thing with comedy, since some of the best comedy is based in truth. I'm glad I did the song and didn't offend, and totally agree with the wording you used when you said that it's "saddening that many believe that these heroes have to be shamed for other groups to gain esteem." That's part of the current state of hatred politics, and is seriously misguided. We'll see where it goes, but I'll still enjoy the ride as much as I can, even while observing the lunacy taking place. I must say, Jamey's voice is hands down, my favorite in all of country music! Great song. Waylon does a version. Im a history buff. I believe it's just a strong lament that can be felt when any country turns inwards on one another. And soldiers who fight actually face the consequence. How does a man "leave his country" to fight on his own country's land? The letters of the soldiers of the civil war speak greatly on this. I believe Chamberlain and Jackson would enjoy this song together if they had the opportunity. Its just a war song. It has a spiritual root that speaks to the individual. Much like Belleau Wood. In both the north and the south you had Irish units. I believe off the top of my head that the most well known instance is when they met in Fredericksburg. You have two brigades from another country. Fighting eachother for another country. Confused in the storm. This song and many songs just brings it back home.
What a poignant song about any soldier far from home risking his life. Specific to the War Between the States, the bodies of 5 unidentified Union soldiers were left behind after a conflict in our county. The women had the soldiers buried on a hill and convinced some of the wealthy people in town to place headstones. Their plea, it could be our sons, husbands, fathers on Union soil. Each headstone simply reads "Unknown Union Soldier." When I drive past I always grieve for the families that never knew what happened to their loved ones. It is a haunting sad and beautiful place. I pray we never see bloodshed on this nation's soil again.
At the end of my road in Georgia theres a cemetery with only 1 identified confederate soldier the cemetery is all Confederate dead and except for the 1 theres over 100 unknown

@@davidemswiler4351 I agree, that's why I said I could relate & sympathize. I understand that the song itself w as not about the rebellion, those were my personal feelings. Love Jameys voice!
@@davidemswiler4351 I did not attack a person or a group of people but the reasons to rebel!
@@lonniekramlich6241 Don't you think those reasons were many? Regardless, the comment about lamenting and moaning sounded like a pot-shot at the south. A rebellion may be based on "reasons" and ideals but is clearly made up of persons who compose the group. Their like-mindedness made them a group and its only splitting hairs to say you're criticize their beliefs and not them. No big deal...you have a right to your opinion. I like the way Trump is running the country and you probably despise him?
@@lonniekramlich6241 Well son, you keep over-generalizing your life away if that's what you want. Those generalizations and your over-emotional response just proved the point I was originally trying to make. Have a nice rest of your evening.
