- The Kenworth W-Model was a truck that had an immediate and lasting impact on a generation of Kiwi truckers. In one guise or another it had a starring role in the likes of Movin' On and Smokey and the Bandit, igniting the imagination of young and old. Head back in time and relive some memories with us as Retro Test 4 hits the road in Rocky, the Kenworth W924.
This is the fourth instalment of a semi-regular series we’ve called Retro Tests.
We’re going to sample trucks from the great era that spanned the early 70s, through until the early 90s, roughly … there are no hard and fast rules. To some degree we aim to investigate just how far we’ve come (if we’ve come that far at all), but the main thrust is to have a bit of fun, go on a nostalgic trip, enjoy a few laughs, and rekindle some fantastic yarns and memories from a great period in our transport history that’s now gone.
The main delivery media for the Retro Tests will be video, with print as the support - in other words, opposite from the magazine’s main test. We hope you enjoy watching and reading them as much as we do putting them together.

What a truck,my old man worked on nzfp logging trucks from 68 to about 1977.
Great stuff. Loved it. First w model I remember seeing up close was kevin Marshall's one from Avoca in kaikohe. From memory I think it had a 3406 cat 380hp. Next tests I would like are 3070 international, g88 volvo, or maybe a ford ltl.
My old boss has one these and a cabover K both 400 Cummins & 13 speed Roadranger. Used to love the view over the bonnet of the W model.
David still has those two trucks but retired from regular duty.
