I think Michael saw a lot of shit as a marine in WWII. Something that's often overlooked from the first film is the difference between Michael and Enzo at the hospital, Enzo's hands shake uncontrollably whereas Michael's are steady as stone.
Also, I think Michael really loved Apollonia and it was her murder that finally turned his heart to stone.

I never fully appreciated Fredo's acting until now. That *"You're my kid brother and you take care of me"* scene is just so authentic and raw. Of course the scene where Kaye leaves Michael is something I've always loved, as well as Connie begging Michael to forgive Fredo. There's some brilliant acting in this movie.

You do some seriously excellent reactions. Very smart, insightful and perceptive. You notice a lot that others don't. Ultimately, you picked up on the main parallels in the move between Vito and Michael. Vito did some shady things, but it was about a sense of community and decency and a certain level of respect. It was so hard being part of an immigrant community back then. Michael is ruthless and cold and loses everyone he loves. He is corporate and brutal. His father wouldn't recognise the Michael he has become.

You're right about the dynamics of Don Vito and Michael's marriage. Don Vito would never treat his wife like that, but she wouldn't have murdered their child either. Michael's and Kay's relationship was toxic at best whereas Don vito's wife was more of an extension of him. They shared a background and struggle that was missing in Michael's marriage. There's a Godfather Saga that's super long and very difficult to find and I saw it once and it was so close to the book that you got a better explanation of all of this. If his first wife wasn't killed the story would've been much more different and Michael would've been more anchored

Great reaction. Couple of things to keep in mind. The attempted murder of Frank Pentangeli was based on the real life attempted murder of Larry Gallo. The actor playing the would be murderer, the late Danny Ailello, ad libbed the "Michael Corleone says hello!" line. The director liked it and kept it in.
In universe, the Rosato Brothers may well have thought that they had Michael's permission because Hyman Roth lied and told them that they did.

In “Godfather 2,” they are young Vito and young Genco (going to see the play, etc.). In “Goodfellas,” iJimmy Conway (De Niro) tells Frank Carbone (Sivero) to return his wife’s mink coat (and eventually Carbone ends up frozen in a meat truck).

Francis Ford Coppola (the director) said he always wanted to tell a story of a father & son when they're both the same age & see the similarities & differences. So, w/ that being said, Vito's #1 priority is his family & then respect is like 1a. Michael, on the other hand seems to be driven by the family NAME & making it stronger. Vito didn't want Mike in this business but Mike can't wait for Anthony to grow older & take over.
Part 3 is ok, I can appreciate it more now that I'm an adult but, you can seriously not watch part 3 & be good.

One movie that is strangely not covered by reactors is the one that Francis Ford Coppola made in-between “The Godfather” and “Godfather 2”: “The Conversation.” It is also a classic, top-notch film. Stars Gene Hackman (amazing performance), John Cazale (Fredo in the Godfather movies), has Harrison Ford in a supporting role playing a baddie (this was before he broke out with Han Solo), and a cameo from Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen in the Godfather movies). Definitely highly recommended!

Willy Cicci (the 'button man') testified against Michael in front of the government committee because he was Frank Pentangeli's right-hand man, and they both believed that Michael had tried to have Frank strangled. It was Hyman Roth who had Frank garroted by the assassin who said "Michael Corleone says 'hello!'" It was a misdirection to turn Pentangeli against Michael, which is why Frank was left alive to potentially testify against Michael, later.

I love the first Godfather, but part 2 is engaging on a whole different level. It's very interesting to see the juxtaposition of Vito Corleone's rise as a true man of respect in the community against Michael's devolution into a living monster (killing his own brother, banishing Kay from the family and access to her own children). Great drama, Shakespearean in scope and weight. Alot of the character backstory of Vito, as portrayed by Robert DeNiro, was drawn from the source novel written by Mario Puzo, who also wrote the screenplay for both GF 1 and 2. Most of it was left out of the first film for the sake of time and Puzo took the opportunity of the sequel to bring the backstory into the saga of the Corleones. Wise approach that in my opinion benefits both parts greatly.

Not sure if you are aware that writer/director Francis Ford Coppola and the actress who played Connie, Talia Shire, are brother and sister IRL. That gives extra poignance to the scene at the mother's funeral where Connie pleads for Michael to forgive Fredo. In an interview of Talia Shire I saw many years ago, she said that while they were filming the scene she heard a small noise from behind the camera, but carried on playing until the end. When it was done, she turned around and saw where the noise came from: It was Francis. He was crying! 😢

    @12.38 What is happening?_
Michael is telling each of Hyman Roth & Frank Pentangelli that the other is behind the assassination attempt so he has to kill them to *gauge/judge their individual reactions.* Pentangelli passed the test because he seemed genuinely baffled, while Roth took it so cool that shows he knew so much in advance, which tol Michael that he is behind the attempt. Michael convinces Pentangelli to make peace with the Rosato family but Roth is so calculated that he figured that part out too so he sent an assassin after Pentangeli with instructions to announce that "Michael says hello" to sow doubt in the minds of both the Corleone & Rosato leutenants & lower ranks. As we also heard a minute ago he used his leutenant KJohnny Ola to tempt Fredo & involve him. It was Fredo that gave information to Roth's men about the layout of the Corleone estate and the whereabouts of everyone.

The difference is that Don Vito didn't have any flawed siblings surrounding him, he also had a traditional Italian wife who actually supported him.
Michael didn't have any of that from his non-Italian W.A.S.P wife, the World Michael lived in was practically another planet from the one she inhabited. if Apollonia was still alive I'm sure Michael would've been a lot more "family orientated" with a woman who understood the territory and actually had his back.
All the siblings were effectively thorns in his side. Sonny was an unthinking hot head, Fredo was since birth a weakling and Connie was a natural born hysterical traitor.

At the beginning when Vito Andolini arrives it is at Ellis Island New York. Everyone that immigrated to the United States had to undergo health screenings at New York it was Ellis Island. I am a naturalized American citizen I came from South Korea as an infant. I had been examining inoculated by South Korean doctors and US Army doctors. I still had to undergo screening when I arrived in the United States. All immigrants no matter where they come from or why they are coming to America should undergo the same screening. It is to protect everyone of us from unknown diseases that they may be carriers of. The touchy-feely people in America today want them to just be set free roam the country. People who came to America had to run to go background checks to ensure they are not criminals and that they will be employable in the United States and not be on welfare. One thing that’s never really explored well in the films (in my opinion) is Michael’s transition to a very cold, remorseless person. In the beginning of the first film, he’s extremely caring, warm, and driven by a sense justice. But, by the second film, he comes off as a pure psychopath. The change in his personality seemed to come very quickly with no real explanation.

Hi Marie. Once again, I like your anticipatory thinking--much of which is true, btw--into what was about to happen in Godfather 2. If you didn't know, Hyman Roth's character was loosely based on the famous Jewish crime boss, Meyer Lansky, as it was Lansky who once said, "We're bigger than US Steel" just as Roth had said in the movie. Roth was very good friends (and partner) with the equally famous Charles "Lucky" Luciano, who created "The Commission" (which includes NYC's 5 Families of today: Gambino, Lucchese, Genovese, Bonanno, Colombo) and was also the first Italian mob boss to partner with non-Italians (Lansky and Bugsy Siegel were both Jewish), so Luciano was very innovative on a number of fronts.
And much like Hyman Roth believed Cuba to have THE biggest gaming/vacation potential in the Americas, Meyer Lansky and his mob associates had invested a LOT of money (and bribing then Cuban President Batista) to make sure it happened. And much like in the movie showed everyone fleeing Cuba when Fidel Castro stormed in and seized control of the island, Lansky, Luciano and their mob associates lost BIG TIME investment in Cuba, after Castro's communist ways seized both power AND all of the private investments on the island, including mob-invested casinos & hotels.

The part about Fredo saying a Hail Mary when he puts a line in the water, and he's then killed while doing so, this is most likely a reference to Hamlet, when he didn't want to murder his step-father while he was praying, because doing so would send his soul to Heaven.
I think this was a way to tell the audience that Fredo wasn't a truly bad guy, and that Michael went too far. The film "sends" Fredo to Heaven.

Godfather 3 has a directors cut called Coda. I saw someone in the comment section recommend not to see that one. But it is generally seen as an improvement and Francis Ford Copolla's original vision. It's also remastered so it looks better than the original godfather 3. I guess it really depends on what version is more accessible to you.

Michael was definitely playing chess. But thru his chess moves, he told different guys that he was suspecting someone else to see how they reacted.
All along it was his brother that was that was a pawn for Hyman Roth.
Roth was mad about the death of Moe Greene. And after Fredo got a lil drunk, he let it slip that he'd been hanging out with Johnny Ola, as well as Hyman Roth.
If Fredo had come along with Michael when he first offered for him to come, things might've ended different for Fredo.
But Fredo hated Michael even tho it was only Fredo that supported Mike when he decided to join the marines.
Fredo was mad about the fact that he got passed over even tho it was obvious that he wasn't smart enough to carry on the family business.
Fredo was jealous of Michael. Probably had been jealous of him his whole life. Fredo couldn't accept the fact that Michael was so much better equipped to handle things.
Fredo was just mad. He couldn't see the whole picture. And the lack of "smarts" is what costs him his life.

Damn Journey Marie, you’re tough on poor Fredo! 😂 I could never kill my family member unless they were actually trying to kill me, Fredo was just stupid. I would’ve kicked him out of the family business, but then the movie wouldn’t have been as dramatic I guess. I think we’re really supposed to dislike Michael at the end. Great reaction!

I think Michael Corlone was very effective as Godfather, but unlike his father, his power was based on fear, not respect, that was nicely brought out in both parts of the trilogy, starting with the introduction in The Godfather Part 1 when Vito refuses to order a murder.
For me, Michael is a kind of Don Fanucci, only with much more brains and quieter, so quiet and deadly, very successful in his role as Godfather, but facing a sad end in terms of his private life, his family, friends, etc.
A Godfather with Michael's intelligence and the heart or character of his stepbrother Tom Hagen would have been very similar to Vito Corleone, that is my conclusion of this story, but such a successor should probably just not exist in this story.

      @periechontology Год назад +1

Michael is only similar to Don Fanucci in that he rules through fear as you say. But his motivation is different. Fanucci was motivated by ego and self gratification. Michael is motivated by a strange sense of responsibility/obligation that we first see when he steps up to take out the Turk to protect his father. For him it is this weird abstract responsibility that doesn't even bring him happiness. He rarely ever smiles during his tenure. You coyld see the enjoyment that Vito, Don Fanucci and Sonny got from their position. Michael never enjoys it, it is a burden that he feels he has to bear because he is the only one who can.

There’s a great irony in Michael’s story. He’s almost too good at being Don. He makes every move objectively correct, he leaves no loose ends and no stone unturned. He is always steps ahead of his enemies and even when he is not he responds in the perfect way. He was literally built to be the Godfather, but as a result of the qualities that make him an amazing leader of the crime family, Cunning, decisive, manipulative, etc he ends up losing his real family. He loses his humanity because optimally in that line of work you have to, because humanity is weakness but it leads to misery.
Loved your reaction to these two films, would love to have you check out “Heat” (1995) next, another film with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro but the first time they shared a scene together. It’s in my opinion the best heist movie of all time.

That bar scene with the strangulation and shootout with the police really happened. They took that scene from an incident that occurred when there was an internal war within the Colombo family in New York.

Another great video! Here's a nugget or two, though you may remember when young Don Vito is in New York sitting at the kitchen table with his two buddies well is the one buddy is clemenza who leaves the gun and takes the cannoli. The other body is sal Casio who ends up getting killed near the end of godfather part 1 and asks Tom Hagan if he can let him slide for old time's sake. It just doesn't work in that world for all time sick
