As an adoptee this song hits me right in the center of my heart.
I just found out that this song is autobiographical. Adds even more meaning to it. I consider it one of the greatest country songs ever. When I hear it, I think of mother who passed away a number of years ago. Her life didn't parallel Gillian's but it was so very difficult. Glad you came to be with folks who loved you and helped to aim you in a positive direction. Not only you, but we get the blessing from it. Dave, too!

I made up the scenario that Vicki lawrence from Carol Burnet's Show was her mother. That's how the Welch's stayed in touch with Gill's biological mum. Vicki was the right age and as an aspiring actress at that time, just out of school and having a baby would have possibly cut her chances. It's a theory. If you look at photos of young Vicki, there's a striking similarity.
