Soviet WW2 Women Snipers

- The Red Army employed women in combat roles, and one of those roles was as snipers. Over a thousand women fought as snipers, and one of the best and most lethal was the highly-decorated Roza Shanina, dubbed 'The Terror of East Prussia'.

Someone send this to EA and Dice. This is how you introduce women into a WW2 game. Not a British female sniper with a prosthetic arm beating people with a cricket bat. Show women in combat doing what they really did.
Right? They could easily have shown the French resistance, or the night witches.
They knew.
They chose poorly.
If they had to be British then there were plenty of women involved in the military in rear area assignments even Queen Elizabeth II but yeah plenty of other nations to pick from where there were women fighters involved. French Resistance, the Red Army and the Partisans in Yugoslavia are just a few off the top of my head. They literally could have picked any of those and I would have been fine with a woman being on the frontlines. Instead, they chose to insert women into roles they never filled and in some cases even write the men involved in the real world operation out of it. Plus have to give EA props for including a British Officer wielding a katana in WW2. They had to go with a katana when there was a Britsh General that used a broadsword and longbow.
Absolutely correct!
If you don't like it don't buy it -EA . 3 months later EA stocks are toilet and BF5 in bargain basement bin. Twats.
why is there not a movie about her??? this woman was legit..
Nazis: "You fight like a girl."
Shanina: "You're damn right I do."
Such a beautiful girl. 59 confirmed kills. She was killed herself at 20yrs. of age. What a horrible war.
The WAR against a people/mindset that is totally intent on you subjugation/ death is a RIGHTEOUS WAR.
Absolutely. Very beautiful young lady. Obviously quite
good at her profession.
This leaves a thirst for more knowledge about Shanina’s life. Her background. Her family, etc.
I will never understand where you dig up all of these events. You must have access to an amazing amount of material. Keep up the good work! Love your channel.
Ms. Shanina was an awesome soldier and very beautiful.
She's probably prettier than any actress that would portray her in a film.
I'm surprised to learn that Shanina took any prisoners. She was one tough, brave woman. Another good video Mark.
Sh'anina, not Shan'ina. Her surname is stressed on the first syllable. Arkhangelsk has a street that was named after her, but nowadays there are not many Russians who know who Roza Shanina was. Thank you for the video.
I am impressed by the tenacity of these women! Shanina’s End is very sad, I had even had a tear in my eye watching this. True. 😢
Hails to all the women in the Soviet military back then.
0:30 . . . Lydia Litvyak, credited with at least 12 Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed, later shot down & killed during the battle of Kursk, August, 1943.
Gawd hell , my Daughter is 20 . Just such a different world we have . The sadness they went through to make the world peaceful through so much violence
Geeze Mark what a tear jerking story! The video of cute Russian lady directing traffic is priceless. Thank you🈷️🇷🇺
The last Russian girl was really cute and sounded really cute too.
Yes .. you can see the sharp colour version of that very same interview she gave while directing traffic ...
As a retired soldier and wannabe rifleman (still), this story is inspiring & heartbreaking. Rest well, Sr/SGT. Ya done good.
What a woman. A true badass
Mark, thanks for yet another excellent documentary. Here's my only somewhat critical comment: as a Russian speaker, I was constantly distracted from the story by misplaced stress: like many other Russian last names her name should be stressed on the first syllable, not the middle or last one. I perfectly understand why English speakers tend to shift the stress away from the first syllable due to the specifics of the English language. Just though to note that her name should be pronounced more like SHAnina, not ShaNIna. But other than that, well done, Sir! Great work!
This actually makes sense. While working with the Boy Scouts some of the parents came along for a shooting day. One of the boys mothers tried her hand and out shot ten men. Like this Russian sniper she was also easy on the eyes.
The female version of Vasily Zaytsev. Rest in peace.
What a truly fine soldier, absolutely dedicated to her just cause, and continuing to fight after being shot.
To have been so grievously wounded whilst protecting a comrade in arms is the highest sacrifice a soldier can make.
She was dedicated, professional and honourable, and it is sad that she died so young.
Shame to loose such a brave and beautiful women! Her accomplishments will never be lost!
Roza is hotter looking than any of today's supermodels!!!
russian women are prettier thats why unlike the British and the american women. because with british and american women most of them dress like prostitutes. with short skirts and all that junk.
That lady @5:30, she is so awesome, just love her attitude and grace. She sounds so sparkly and moves so fluidly like a ballerina.
Помним и никогда не забудем!
Have you considered a video about the Battle of Brisbane between Australian and American forces during the second world war?
It's an interesting story that really could do with more attention
Yes Please, I've never heard of that one.
I just looked it up..pretty intense brawl
Yeah I vote for that one too. Good idea.
@@johnparrish9215 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brisbane
Not a bad idea Brock. I'm sure a lot of people will be disappointed with the content, expecting a "Battle" but getting a street brawl instead. Albeit with one side armed with shotguns, .45's and batons and the other armed with fists and a colourful vernacular.
Is it my imagination, or are all the female Soviet snipers shown in this video exceptionally good looking? Is that mere chance or did the Soviet machine purposely pick them for skill and good looks?
Thank you for honoring this WOMAN AMONGST women
I Know men today that couldn't rack the bolt on a Mosin Nagant after being fired. The casing expands in the chamber and you have to hit the bolt hard upward to get the bolt free. Devastating and Accurate thou. That's a Woman Hero.
Those Soviet babes were deadly!
There were the flying ones too. The night witches.
@@juststeve5542 For some reason I always think of the night witches as being old hags. But they were probably hot like this sniper lady.
@@juststeve5542 Indeed. The
Soviets initially didn't want women in combat because of their WWI experiences. Between all the men lost in combat the female non-combatant deaths, plus Uncle Joe's purges, it was impossible to grow the population. Stalin wanted women at home to produce babies when Igor came on his infrequent leaves, It was only after the Soviets grew desperate that they allowed women in specialized combat roles like the snipers and a few fighterb regiments. BY 1944 it was obvious the Germans were going to lose, and Ivan was able to get more leave than in 1942. Stalin ordered almost all the women withdrawn from combat so they could fulfill what Joe felt was their natural function instead of shooting at Nazis.
During the German advances into the Soviet Union (especially 1942) the Germans were appalled to find the bodies of Soviet women. They had assumed that they were fighting Soviet men, until they continued advancing and would sometimes discover women were firing weapons at them. The Germans thought the Russians as having no morality to let women actually enter combat roles, and fighting more fanatically than the Soviet men in cases. Perhaps it was the huge amount of casualties the Soviets suffered in 1941 that led the Germans to be fighting women. The Germans called them witches.
*FEMALE SNIPERS were the most adept at shooting high ranking German Officers.....* 🧐
*Tests show that the average woman can easily spot a well heeled man at over 1,000 yards.* 😎
I could imagine Russian women carrying sniper scopes everywhere
I was just thinking about Red Army female aces. If you could do something on the fighter pilots as well, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the excellent work.
They ought to make a movie about this lady. Very interesting story and very brave woman.
I am Indian watching your channel . to study history is my hobby. your way of speaking , .presenting and photo events are awesome .
I am very interested to know how the survivors of those units did in civilian life after the war. Are the long term effects of combat the same for women and men?
What a great channel, so glad I found it. Every video is crammed full of info which makes you watch until the end. Keep em coming.
Thank you for your service Roza RIP
She was a beautiful girl. It makes you wonder how lucky you are to be born in a time and a place where there is peace.
That last Russian girl was cute as hell! Adorable really ❤️
Anyone notice at 2:20. She closes her eyes before taking the shot..
I remember a picture of a Russian women in Pots-Dame Platz directing traffic who was a real knock-out!
These ladies and the “Night Witches” are why I joined.
Sad but inspiring. She deserved to live.
Great Video! There's something mystical about snipers general. It's not like looking through the sights and seeing a tank, or ordering a artillery strike. Being a sniper is up close and personal. Being a sniper means you follow your enemy's movements to the point of complacency and when they let their guard down the sniper exhales and squeezes the trigger looking through theirs sights as they watch their target's brain explode. It doesn't get much closer than that except maybe hand to hand combat which is gruesome as it is gruelling. During the American Civil War there are many accounts of hand to hand fighting. There were times when like at the battle of Franklin bodies were a couple of feet in depth. So much that some soldiers were killed standing up. You would never think that a rifle butt could do so much damage to the human skull.
Again great video.
There are many interesting stories of the 20th century. Thank you Mark for showing us them!
Whats your plan now?
Beautiful and deadly. My biggest weakness in dating choices.
Kinda surprised about the quality of these photographs, in particular there is one here that is of extremely high quality that I am surprised they would do during the chaos of WW2.
She was an ideal propaganda subject.
You better believe they took some good pictures of her.
Reminds me of call of duty: finest hour, when you play a few missions as a female Russian sniper. You know, back when games tried to get shit right and actually pay homage to the people who fought and the stories they have.
Princesd of death. Too bad she went out like that.
The final bit with the russian traffic girl is hilarious!
Impact on third letter: ShAnina
Everlasting Glory to her Memory.
Excellent information as usual. Thanks for sharing!
Damn! 59 kills and she was killer good looking! Such a tragedy she died so young. Heroes are where you find them.
50,000 subs.
Congratulations Mark.
I never even heard of this amazing woman until now.
Thank you.
I wonder whether the psychological impact of killing is different on women than on men.
It's easier for woman, just go to divorce court.
Me too
Erik von Thein i dont think it is.
I do think the men probably puposely fought harder with women around tho.
Don’t think so. Recently read about a couple of women in the Dutch resistance. They were pretty and used to flirt with germans and collaborators in bars. Once they arrived in a secluded area for some ’fun’, they pulled up a gun and shot the Nazis point blank. She mentioned that the initial instinct was to almost help the bewildered target up on his legs again. But they remained professional and went on new missions against new targets.
Great work again Mark, and a nice homage to Russian women!
is it me or she looks like black widow from the avenger movies..... she was a beautiful women may she rest in piece...
Very interesting Mark.
Your videos are well researched and well presented. Thanks for the effort.
Anyone that say women are not fit for battle obviously have not been in battle and had enemy women shooting at you!
I salute all men and women that have served their countries in or out of combat.
raptor millennium you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. I have served 7 years in the military, often with women. They are excellent in various roles. As long as physical requirements for both men and women for different roles are not compromized they can serve just as well. I don’t believe, I know!
Israel,as an example, utilizes women very well.
@raptor millennium -Not fit for combat?Men are 'smarter' and 'stronger' than women. That is B.S!
With all due respect for Roza Shanina's undoubted skill, the claim that eleven female Soviet snipers defeated fifty German soldiers in close quarter combat in a trench sounds very much like Soviet propaganda.
They would have been outnumbered almost five to one.
Eleven bolt-action rifles (probably) against multiple submachine guns in a trench is a bad idea.
It's a very different type of combat from what the snipers were used to but one which their German opponents (reasonably assuming that they were non-sniper infantry) should have been much more familiar with.
Higher upper body strength at close quarters would have been a significant German advantage.
I just finished watching Mark on Netflix and saw there was a new video here. It's been a banner day for history viewing.
Great Video, Great Action, and great Facts Mark !!
The night witches would also be an interesting subject for one of your videos
overall i would love to see some more aviation on this channel
You spoil us Mark!
And I thank you, much stuff I did not know.
There was not “military draft “ for woman, al of them were volunteers
Congrats on 50k! 🎉
Great video! i don’t understand how you can find all those photo’s and videos of them!
An excellent video. Got some useful ideas for my writing more stories.
fellow female sniper, Lyudmila Mikhailovna killed a total of 309 German soldiers, making her the most successful female sniper in history
RebSike 😂😂😂👍
So says the USSR lol get real
And she was born on a mountain with unicorns and Kim
Both the Germans and the Soviets exaggerated no of kills. Grain of salt advised.
May God Bless these defenders of their peoples.
Congrats on hitting the 50,000 subs target
Eye of an eagle, heart of a hero, and a bloody fearsome terror to the German army as a whole. And she thought she hadn't contributed much?
really good story about a skilled woman who loved her country !
Fkn awesome, although, sadly, she payed the ultimate price. Almost as sad -- that no statue was ever erected in her honour.
Another Amazing Video
Always fascinating and educational... 🙏🏼🇬🇧🏁
11 thousands kills by snipers doesn't sound like a lot. Its more psychological
thanks for sharing this !!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on 50k subs
Beautiful woman but fought like a 1000 men!
Great channel - most informative
Good video. I'm currently reading Bruno Sutkus' autobiography (he was a German sniper on the Russian Front). His combat and post-war experiences were very eventful (hint hint)
MARK FELTON !
Please do a video on the Woman Tanker who bought her own T-34 and used it !
Excuse me, but Shánina, not Shanína. Sorry for my mistakes, I speak English very bad. Thanks a lot for video about our heroes in English.
Thanks for great content. Donated some $ via paypal. Have a great summer.
Felicidades por tu producciones! , pero Marc ponle subtítulos en español o doblaje ! Y gracias 😊
Should I ever reach Valhalla, I'll look her up and ask her.
Definitely

Meanwhile, 17-20 year-old college kids today need safe spaces and therapy dogs.
Very nice choise oh topic!
Keep it up!
From Kenya
i just watched the movie... battle of svestapol...most of these snipers targeted the officers to mess with command and control structure ...
Hey Mark does your channel only cover ww2 ?
4.53. What a women , rest in peace you beautiful girl .
'more carefull, patient and cunning' men have no chance
Amazing. And that woman at the end shows us that, hey, they may have been deadly, but they were still girls!
Thank you.
I don’t know if you have an examples (like in other videos) but I would find a video on M4A3E2 Sherman “Jumbo” vs. Panther very interesting.
I do like reading the stories about her , my kind woman .
Mark, please do a video about Lydia Litvyak. Ace fighter pilot.
I will become a patron if you do. ;)
Thank you Shanina, for helping the world rid itself of the NAZI plague. Rest in piece in the arms of GOD.
I have nothing but contempt for Neo Nazis.
