      IRS2092 based designs will be my choice simply because it can handle 4ohm loads. These chips in bridge mode could only handle 8ohm loads.

    Great video, Very informative! I have a couple of these boards, Identical to the one you've reviewed (XH-M253 board)
    I have a couple of questions, Much appreciated if you can find the time to answer them! (Maybe it can help other DIYers too)
    Firstly, The manufacturer specified voltage for the TDA8954 is ±42.5 Vac. But due to board design with cheap capacitors, the recommended board voltage is only 0-24vac. Apart from replacing the capacitor bank with suitably high voltage rated caps, Is there anything else we need to replace on the board to run at the full voltage range? (Are there any other components which cannot handle the higher voltage range?)
    Secondly, If the caps on top of the board are going to be replaced anyways for higher voltage rating, Wouldnt it make sense to re-mount the inductors and other tall components under the board, allowing for a much larger heatsink/fan combination on top?
    I have a couple of surplus 250W xeon grade CPU coolers, Which may allow fully passive operation!

    • @EngineeringEssentials
      @EngineeringEssentials  Год назад +1

      I don't recommend full voltage operation when the power source is a transformer. The maximum voltage allowed for the chip is +/- 41V DC. In terms of AC voltage it will be below 27VAC. Every component in the circuit is capable of operating at +/-41VDC. So changing components won't help. But placing through hole components on the other side will definitely help, and it is a good suggestion, I will try it out soon. A bigger heatsink is necessary.

      @@EngineeringEssentials Thanks for the reply! Your video and reply surely helped me with this project!
      I got my boards back, will try remounting the components on the back. I did try mounting a (much) larger heatsink (ad-hoc, nothing properly mounted) and the thermal performance was incredible. I think fully passive operation is definitely possible with the xeon heatsinks I mentioned earlier, will try to post a video of the end result. Thanks again :)

      If you are using the exact same board shown in this video, then you can trouble shoot in the following ways. 1. Remove signal input to the amplifier and connect amplifier signal input to signal ground. Turn amplifier ON, if you hear the same humming noise then follow the rest. otherwise your amplifier is good, you need to find a good signal source that's it. 2. Check speaker wiring, check capacitor (capacitor value, leaking), check DC voltage (value, polarity) if everything is nominal continue to next step. 3. check transformer for leakage from primary to secondary. connect a multi meter from transformer "secondary" to "earth" pin of house wiring, put multi meter in ac voltage mode(200V) you should not see a voltage greater than 40V otherwise you should consider earthing 0V point of secondary to earth through ground loop isolation circuit. 4. IF nothing above helps you need to reheat all solder connections to eliminate chances of dry solder. 5. If everything fails you need to trace the circuit and check each and every component. 99% of problems will be solved in step 1 itself. Thank you!

      Regarding amplifier/subwoofer power, select a Subwoofer first that meets your requirements, then select an amplifier with 20% more rms output than your subwoofer. Care must be taken to match impedance of your subwoofer to amplifier rated impedance. thank you!

    I appreciate your prompt reply. But It was my preconceived notion that SMPS power supplies are not suitable for audio amplifiers??

    • @EngineeringEssentials
      @EngineeringEssentials  3 года назад +3

      Partially you are correct, but partially you are incorrect. Let me explain, suppose you are building a half bridge amplifier(Class AB/D/A) you need 100W@4ohm then DC rail voltage on full load should be +/-32V(pure DC without any ripple), peak current drawn will be 7.1A, say 8A. SMPS required for the job will be dual 32V 8A-512W SMPS. Lets consider Transformer, A 30-0-30 transformer will give 34-0-34 steady voltage with 10000uF capacitors, on load. Transformers can be overloaded for short amount of time and short term peak current draw is handled by capacitors. These two factors let us select a transformer with less current rating (probably 4A considering dynamic behaviour of music) than required(8A). That meansTransformer required: 30-0-30 4A 240VA. For same power output Transformer VA required is less than half of that SMPS.
      SMPS can cause interference with pre-amplifier, tone control etc, proper shielding and earthing is important. (this is why LLC converters are recommended for audio amplifiers.)
      Life span of SMPS is considerably less than that of Transformer.
      Transformers are easy to make and setup.
      For Class AB, Class A amplifiers might conduct high frequency switching noise generated by SMPS to speakers, hindering sound quality.(for class D amplifiers this effect is filtered by the low pass filter at output.)
      Still i recommend using a SMPS for classD amplifiers. Why? two reasons. class D amplifiers are sensitive to power supply voltage fluctuations. if the rail voltage collapse during a bass punch, subwoofer won't work effectively.
      second reason, most class D amplifiers have a voltage limit, say TPA3116D2 voltage limited to 26V. SMPS could keep this voltage on its rails regardless of current being drawn. but a transformer voltage may fall to 18V during load. This wll severly affect amplifier power output. Lastly if your amplifier is bridged(most class D amplifiers are), SMPS and transformer cost will be nearly the same.
      hope it helps! thank you!

    • @EngineeringEssentials
      @EngineeringEssentials  3 года назад +1

      In short, cost, complexity is the main factors that keeps SMPS away from audio amplifiers.

      No, that is not normal( if the heatsink temperature exceeded 50 degree Celsius) There is something wrong. Your amplifier might be oscillating (oscillation may be due to an open feedback connection ). Before you proceed I highly recommend you to check idle current draw from power supply on both rails. If current draw from both power rails are same your amplifier is oscillating. If current draw from both rails are vastly different there is something wrong with your board, a throughout checking required.

If you have the exact same board you're fine you could use it with 4ohm as well. From my tests it can only output around 30W of clean Power after that output signals gets distorted ( not clipping) . If you use a toroidal Transfomer use 27-0-27V(check dc rails, it should not exceed 40V) 8A for both channels, for EI core Transformer better go with 24-0-24V 10A. • @EngineeringEssentials
      @EngineeringEssentials  4 года назад

      This scope has voltage limit of +/-30V anything higher than that cannot be measured directly. So you need voltage attenuator, most simple way is to build a resistor network of equal resistances connected in series(1% tolerance resistors recommended). This network when connected across voltage to be measured (amplifier output) will divide the voltage by number of resistors in the network. For example, if you connect 5 resistors of 1kOhm in series and connected across 100v power supply, across each and every 1k resistors you will get 20V, absolutely measurable by this oscilloscope. (Keep in mind that as no of resistors increase error in the measurement can also increase, if you have a accurate voltage source available, first measure known voltage with this set-up, and find out the ratio between voltage applied and voltage indicated on oscilloscope before measuring amplifier output, this way we can reduce the error. Thanks)

      @@josephalan4152 you cannot cascade amplifiers to get power from each amplifier added up to output. A power amplifier can only take a voltage signal and amplifies to give power at output, that means high current + Voltage at output.
      If you want a high power amplifier either you can parellel them (like TDA 7293) or go and buy a more powerful amplifier (TPA 3255). This amplifier TDA8954Th is already bridged and do not support paralleling with any other amplifier. The only choice left is to replace amplifier.

    This board is in bridgemode so it does NOT support 4 ohms. Check the specs of the chip

      @EngineeringEssentials  3 года назад

      Yes it does not, but it doesn't deliver the rated power either on 8ohms.

    From this i guess it's better to get a sure electronics class D Board instead of these 400watt ones you get get for 20bucks?
    Thanks for the video!

      I got it for 14USD from AliExpress different ones are getting up to 200W into 4 ohms. So it's sure chip is capable but the board sucks. Thank you for watching 🙏

      Yea like i guessed.. That the boards are not so great.
      From the cheap ones this is the one i was looking forward to buy (not from this seller but the same board).

    Super testing with scrap power supply. For this kind of testing u need 1.5 or more time powerful supply that recommended

      Better Power supplies means better Power output, but I don't think enough to meet the rated power

      @@sandeepsinghjagdev3485 they will send the order for sure. But we don't know what will be the reaction from Indian customs department. Even if you order on AliExpress it's better to select a shipping options with tracking inside our country. This way if you didn't receive your product you will get the information, and possibly claim a refund from AliExpress.
