@@ACTruitt I think speedtraining is the best. Its good for 'over' speed of your racepace. So you can easily run your racepace. Endurance training is also good, but not to much of it, because its ruining your running style. Once a week lifting weights is ok, but as a runner you must look out for being to heavy

Yeah, It kind of kills this video to have your distance in km and your pace in miles. Just make it all metric then everyone else in the world can watch it easily without having to do conversions. Alternatively, being American if you want to stick to the 19th Century way of measuring speed and distance, then at least put up some subtitles of the metric figures so we don't miss what your saying because were too busy trying to convert everything.

    • @joelouden6592
      @joelouden6592 5 лет назад

Don't feel bad. I used to run a 4:40 mile in high school and at age 40-41 would run 3 miles in 27 mins on easy run days. Now, 60 pounds later, I can only run 1.2 miles and it takes me over 12 mins after 5.5 weeks of 1-mile runs 3-4 times per week. 6 weeks ago I could only run 1/2 mile and my fastest 400 meters was 2:08. I got this out of shape despite walking 10 miles a day at work for years plus weight workouts a few times a week. If you're overweight, it will take you much longer to progress. I'm just trying to avoid injuries at 250lbs and make slow, safe progress. The only way walking prepares someone for running is getting the joints and feet used to bearing weight for long distances, but it doesn't really do much to prepare one for the jumping motion of running and the oxygen debt. The only way it can is If you walk up steep hills or walk very fast. Good luck and keep at it.

Also use a lot of cross training instead of higher run volume.

I ran a marathon at under 4 minute per km pace. I was 39 then, I'm 65 now. But I ran one Park Run last year in under 25 minutes, so if I set myself, it should work. In my favour is that, because of all the miles I've put in previously, I get into a good rhythm very quickly and the (marathon) speed is there. It's just training after that.

My 5k pr is a 17:00 flat, and what I believe is the best way to get close to a sub 20 min 5k is to build a large base and adapt your body to the sport of running. Mileage is key for anyone trying to break 20 in the 5k.

  • @weskenny
    @weskenny 2 года назад +1

    There are 4 paces.
    1. I use marathon pace, should be easy speed
    2. 10km pace
    3. Best 5km pace
    4. Best 2km pace
    18 minutes
    1 min marathon pace
    1 min 2km pace
    2 min marathon pace
    2 min 5km pace
    3 min marathon pace
    3 minute 10km pace
    2 min marathon pace
    2 min 5km pace
    1 min marathon pace
    1 min 2km pace
I normally do 2. So above takes 18 minutes, but every one after takes 16 because you don't do 2 in a row of the 2km pace. 34 minutes and when fit 50 minutes of it
    My times improve exponentially

Some that come to mind are 1) nose-breathing vs. mouth breathing, 2) stride-length & knee-height, 3) music or no music (listening)?, 4) arms (how much should they contribute in the process), 5) what to eat the night before, or morning of, 6) training on uphills ...help especially?, 7) what to think about in the last mile?, 8) best stretches to do?, and any other strategies??? Thanks.

Many thanks for the video. For me, I'd find it really helpful to see the stats written on a board. Unfortunately it all went a bit over my head but I will listen again and try and get a hold on it.
However, a couple of weeks ago, I finished a 5k race in 32.42 mins, probably helped by the almost completely flat terrain of tarmac. I was pretty pleased with the result as it was my very first race and I'm 67 yrs old.
Although I have a trot now and again, thelongest I've done this year is 3.6km. Generally I only jog for about 2.5k as I live in a steep area and the only flat land nearby is a tennis court.
Anyway, I'd love to get my timing sub 30mins, so I'm keen to try and improve myself all round, starting with the right trainers!

I bought some Salomon trainers last year thinking that I'll splash to make sure I get a good, supportive pair for joging. And they've actually been very good and I wear them a lot, not just for training. However, I now realise they are for trail running and not road running. So when I get the chance, I'm going to look at ones specifically for road running as I don't plan to run on uneven ground.

Seeing this video / some of the comments here gives me hope. I started running 3 months ago coming from no running or fitness experience at all. I could barely run the 1.5 mile loop in my neighborhood and that was at about a 11-12min / mile. For the last two months I've run every day and now I can do my hilly 10k route at around 8:30-9:00 pace. My fastest mile times have been clocked around 7:20 which I've run without even realizing it. Looking forward to many years of running and I really hope I can crack the sub-20 5k in the future. It's an arbitrary goal, but it seems somewhat reasonable and very challenging.

I recently started running some 5k races and I'm hooked. I just want to run my best. I have no illusions about my abilities. I'm slow, just happy to finish. what do you think my honest chances are for increasing my speed to something like a sub 20 at my age? Diane I run with some female masters runners who run sub 19 min 5ks. There are a lot of variables, the primary one is effort, they meet other runners at 5:30 in the morning and run track workouts. The community makes a big difference too. I was able to run sub 20 minute 5K's regularly up until I hit my 40's, About 10 years ago a Canadian Goose caused me to make evasive moves to avoid a the protective father goose who was flying straight at me.. My knee has never been the same. Now I have arthritis in the knee. I have pain and I'm gimpy when I first get up from sitting. I have found that I can run through the discomfort, the better part of the first mile I just kind of grin and bear it. By the end of the first mile all the pain goes away. It's like that knee just needed to get lubed up. Anyways, now it takes everything I got on a good day to turn in miles under 10 minutes. I'm working on losing weight because there is a strong correlation between my weight and how fast I can run :) Thanks for allowing me to do what ever I'm doing in your comment section here.

Awesome video, one of the very best sources of advice and guidance online, a focused mind like yours will not be affected by the odd distracting comment of course. My question is how many times a week would you do this and what would you compliment it with. Running 22.29 BP but that is pushing well in to the red. I manage an ongoing injury, right hip, right knee and right ankle with joint in right foot big toe really sore even when I do not run - significant over pronation - wearing insoles that help significantly - very tight in pelvis. All linked to lower back (partially disectomy). This year want sub 20 and to move on to 10k. Watch all you videos. Nice one Nate.

Sub 20 even at age 60 does not age grade out at a 80%. I'm almost there (59) and almost there (20:40) so it's a matter of staying healthy and train specifically. And I did buy a road bike after last injury, so that is good advice, rest of your comment is ignorant garbage.

I currently run 25:15 PR for my 5k. Will doing this routine at least twice a week along with distance training help in getting a better 5k time?? Thanks for the great video!

I ran an 18:09 las October at the end of my cross country season. I'm gonna destroy that time next year by 30 seconds at least.

When I started running cross country, I ran about a 26 min 5k. At the end of the season, I made it down to 21:45 time. This year, my goal is a sub 21.

I've run a sub 20 minute 5K before, so I have two options.
    1) train for (I'm guessing) 3 months to get back into that shape
    2) invent a time machine and set it back 11 years
    Oh well. #1 it is.
