Sol is the brains here. His intelligible input is of great value. I went to a better school, there is an added advantage in being in a school where teachers are competent and present, facilities are all functional and resources are readily available. It was nice. The timing is not off. He's right.

Well yes but I went to a public school and got 4 distinctions. I also have friends who got 99% for maths and phys, public school kids can get great marks if they just put in the work. There are programs that support public school kids like promaths, you just gotta sacrifice groove. Bro could've chosen another time to bring that up, he sounds like he wants to promote victim mentality, we can't cry about everything and expect Government to take care of us, we are responsible for our own lives... life was never meant to be fair, it just is!

@@TBG26 I did not go to a private school. I went to a public school. In a Jewish area. Everything was immaculate. I cannot say the same for the schools that were around my area. Most schools in the hood don't have basic things like swimming, squash, tennis, even E.G.D, not to mention a computer lab. We have brilliance in the hood but it is misdirected because of lack of resources. I know people who fix p.c's but they did not do CAT or I.T in high school. Imagine if they had those opportunities. It is not a victim mentality to wish the same for everyone. There are some schools in this country that are so well-resourced that of you don't have enough money for varsity, you have amassed enough knowledge through high school to start something and make money.
@@lionelscarf2872 Well put, cannot disagree with you here, we didn't have most of the stuff you mentioned. It's great to wish others had those basic resources... but unfortunately that's not how this system we are currently in works. An equal playing field for all is impossible, I agree that it's not fair but that's just how it is... for me there is no point in complaining that the Government should do this or that, that train has passed and we have seen that it doesn't work.
The community taking matter into their own hands works, the individual taking matters into their own hands works... basically I'm saying complaining about things not being equal doesn't solve anything. Taking ownership of our own lives, being responsible for what happens in our lives (present and future) works. Yes it's not fair that some go to shitty schools and some go to better schools, but that's just how the system is. It's not fair that some have both parents and some have single/no parents at all, it's not fair that some are born into poverty and some are born into wealth, it's not fair that the weather in the Northern Hemisphere can get extremely cold but the weather in the South is not as bad, it's not fair that Lions can basically kill anything in the wild but Zebras can't.
To summarize my point (while agreeing with you), complaints to the government don't get us anywhere, they clearly don't care... it's up to the individual to make the most of their situation and try to improve it for the next generation, it's up to the community to offer their "tech literacy classes" on weekends for kids because we see that they don't have IT at school. Government is not our parent, that's not what this structure is for.
Back to the Sol convo, celebrate the kid's win without overshadowing it. It's like bringing up that other kids don't get to practice swimming at poor neighborhoods while your child is celebrating winning a regional swimming tournament... that's not emotionally intelligent

Dont sleep on math lits, thats one of the most practical real life skilling subjects there is in our curriculum. Because unlike alk the other subjects that rewards children to do as they told and follow the formula, math lits actually forced rewarded kids for problem soving outside of the formula, creativity thinking and thinking on the spot

I don't think South Africans touch on how the Free State has held the highest pass rates for the past few years. A deep culture of scholarship is instilled in the learners. The students attend camp where University learners coach matriculants. The teachers are passionate & hold post graduate qualifications in the subjects they teach. A long way to go considering the potential but a lot of good happening in the province.

Sol cannot say the curriculum is easy. This curriculum is very difficult. As a tutor, I can tell you for a fact that since 2013, the curriculum has been going steep. The difference now is that parent can afford to buy a whole lot of study and master guides, which is where the actual exam papers come from. Go to any Van schaik and buy your children those study and master books.

at Sol I think it's inaccurate to say the standard of education has dropped compared to 1996 when there's been so many advancements in education, not paying any attention to the pass mark, just the education and the approach to teaching, and you'll also not know this because you're not in the education sector.
True as someone who did all curriculum and I am now teaching CAPS I can easily say the education standards has improved a lots then what we were learning in 90s and early 2000s, Mac and Sol is wrong
