This song resonates with me more than ever, as someone who is finding his own path through self conflict. Previously, I had put Chvrches as a band that I would indulge in, almost like an escape from my conflict. Little I did I realize that after actually listening, I have found meaning, through their efforts, and now I have them to thank for aiding in the opening of the many paths that lay in front of me today.
Honestly I was scared before listening to this because "the bones of what you believe" was such a huge piece I felt it was gonna be hard to top. Didn't think it was possible but they did it! #hype
Nick Miller i was terrified they would change their weird type of music but they didnt i m sure the new album will be amazing. i dont believe that each album must be better than the previous one. the bones of what you believe will always be amazing
Konstantina Phoenix Weird? Nah, this isn't weird. Not compared to a lot of the stuff I listen to on a daily basis. Then again, I'm a huge fan of Modest Mouse, so my standards for "weird" are pretty high.
I hope she'll keep the accent forever because it really adds to the song so much. Both their albums are so incredibly beautiful I can't believe it , There isn't even 1 "mediocre" song on any of their albums, they're all equally amazing and that says something about chvrches, best band I've heard in my life.
it's been years since i found chvrches. i miss listening to this after getting home from class. i miss our old house. i miss my old friends. re-listening to this was bittersweet. thank you chvrches.
I feel like this song is about searching for closure after a breakup. . •The repetition of "And I know I need to feel relief/released" speaks to her need for closure. She's conflicted, however, wanting to forget everything, "Take care to bury all that you can," and still wanting to remember what once was, "Take care to leave a trace of a man." . •The lines, "There are tiny cracks of light underneath me and you say I got it wrong. But I try hard to uncover them," reveal her lingering hope for repair. The cracks of light are the signs the relationship could work, but the lover does not feel the same. . •Saying, "Take care to tell on me for the cause" in order to gain closure - the cause - she acknowledges she shares in the relationship's failure. . Ultimately, although she wanted a clean break, "I will show restraint just like we said we should," she instead finds herself in the "grey between the lines."
Sort of, Lauren Mayberry said, “Leave a Trace” is the middle finger mic-drop. It’s about that point where you’re like, “There’s no point having this conversation anyways: There will be no resolve, I won’t feel better about it, you won’t feel better about it, no outcome from this will actually change my reality.” It makes me feel better to write about that-I’ve done something constructive with it. You don’t put that on other people, you put that into what you do. That’s always the way I’ve written lyrics. My ex-partners are not friends with me, but I’m OK with that.
In all honesty this is a million miles away from anything I'd usually listen to. But I just have to say I find the melody so contagious in this track. It is like nothing else I have heard. Very original!
The bridge had this like, Love Me Like You Do thing going where the fuzzy background beats became clearer and clearer. Other than that, I'm hooked. Malaysia needs to see CHVRCHES live again!
Been reading interviews about how they approached this second album, and as soon as I heard Lauren Mayberry say they were going to go in a more stripped down direction, I knew this album was going to be good. LP1 was amazing ad elaborate, but sometimes the vocals were buried under shimmery elaborate hooks, and sometimes the riffs were only complex because they were made from an interesting sound. This is not the case with Leave a Trace. It's simple, but groovy. Also, Mayberrys vocals sound so much more gutsy and confident.
JonnyOneEyes agree completely. Previously, I always thought she sounded almost apologetic, as if the subtext was something like "sorry I'm not better at this". Now, though, it's more like "you know what...I'm actually pretty decent at this. Let's get a little adventurous, shall we...?".
slaya771 I don't know. She certainly has improved her singing skills, but on their first album she reminded me of Kate Bush on "The Kick Inside". Her voice just had something youthful that is quite unique and that I now miss.
Nice of this song to start getting air play during my finals week. It was good for stress relief. I feel like this is what "Fight Song" would be like if it was good.
Wow, this feels so new and different! I think I really like it. It's beautiful (and the video is gorgeous). I'm so excited to hear the rest of the album. Thanks so much for your awesome creative work.
I didn´t know i could enjoy so much a song until now. I truly love how honest your lyrics are, the emotion that you transmit with them, and the beauty of the music.
I absolutely loved entire "Bones in What we Believe" album. And by the sound of this song... I'm gonna love this album too!!! Ever since I first heard CHVRCHES I've loved their stuff. Cannot wait for September!!!!!
Congratulations to Chvrches on a new album. :) I love how Lauren's vocals sound really strong in this track. :) Looking forward to the rest of "Every Open Eye"!
I'm really glad that they made a new album. The style of their music hasn't changed, but the types of songs that they're coming out are going to be really interesting. including this on.
So good. If this track is indicative of the overall quality of the new album I think it'll surpass The Bones of What You Believe in awesomeness, keep it coming guys!
This band can't help but write grin-inducing hooks. It's very difficult to be miserable and listen to this ground; props. Loving this track; great production too. Excited for whatever they have in store. You have to give them props for writing something so happy in such dark times.
CHVRCHES are love, CHVRCHES are life.
Such a good song!
Hey! I follow you!
ARTV Reviews Jon from ARTV yusss. Love your stuff dude, keep up the good work.
***** thanks :)
ARTV Reviews I just imagined Lavren saying "This is my swamp."
Please don't
Jon. No. Go back to the swamp.

Does anyone else seriously love the video? Like the typography and flowers and everything?
showfish love everything about this video!
The text is too tiny
I need futuristic 80s-esque synthpop in my life. Thank you for filling that hole, CHVRCHES. :-3
chromatics
Will Tenenbaum or every other electropop band
Bartimaeeus lmao ok bruh, keep slaying with that superior taste of yours
Mic Townsend Ohoho. Have you heard Aquaman by Walk The Moon? It's all 80s synthpop-esque :)
look up Com Truise too, it's less pop-ish but kinda sounds like a soundtrack for a blade runner sequel
Honestly I was scared before listening to this because "the bones of what you believe" was such a huge piece I felt it was gonna be hard to top. Didn't think it was possible but they did it! #hype
Dude same, but this song is dank so I'm pretty sure the album will be dank as well.
Nick Miller i was terrified they would change their weird type of music but they didnt i m sure the new album will be amazing. i dont believe that each album must be better than the previous one. the bones of what you believe will always be amazing
Konstantina Phoenix i demand perfection
Konstantina Phoenix Weird? Nah, this isn't weird. Not compared to a lot of the stuff I listen to on a daily basis. Then again, I'm a huge fan of Modest Mouse, so my standards for "weird" are pretty high.
If someone didnt say die antwoord when weird was mentioned I would of been disappointed.
I hope she'll keep the accent forever because it really adds to the song so much. And in a shocking turn of events, CHVRCHES releases a new song that is literally fucking perfect.
Brian Burnett Ha, ha, 'shocking.'
This song is definitely growing on me. The first listen I was "eh" but now I'm really digging the chorus.
pixelpi Exact same reaction.
pixelpi I hope it grows on me as well. Right now I think it's... average. It certainly isn't bad, but I don't think it's great either.
R0DisG0D how you likin it now? haha
Me too. At first listen I was like "hmm okay" but I heard it earlier and it's been stuck in my head all day, suddenly I love it haha
Justin I
I like it better but I'm still think it's worse than what's on their debut album.
it's been years since i found chvrches. i miss listening to this after getting home from class. i miss our old house. i miss my old friends.
re-listening to this was bittersweet. thank you chvrches.

very nice analysis

***** It's nice to finally listen to new music with substance in this day and age.
Zack F
Zack F A lot of music has depth these, it's just you don't listen to it. So you wouldn't catch it.
Officially psyched for this! Well, I was before, but now I wish it was being released so much sooner.
Only need one word to describe this: PHENOMENAL.
This song is absolutely amazing - style didn't change, Lauren's voice sounds even better and stronger, and it's just a happy feeling song! Keep it up
I Love This song
This track hits all the right tones, it’s beautifully written and put together.
In all honesty this is a million miles away from anything I'd usually listen to.
But I just have to say I find the melody so contagious in this track. It is like nothing else I have heard. Very original!
Brilliant. Didn't even need to grow on me; it instantly stuck in my head like a favorite memory.
Wonderful job. Oh man saying that I love this band is an understatement.
Absolute belter of a tune. Love Lauren's vocal style on this one.
The bridge had this like, Love Me Like You Do thing going where the fuzzy background beats became clearer and clearer. Other than that, I'm hooked. Malaysia needs to see CHVRCHES live again!
This is such a beautiful song. The lyrics, the gorgeous harmony

Pretty much everything I wanted to say. I appreciate the more literal lyrics as well. Because they're simpler, they're more powerful and potent.
William Matlock how is thing song any more stripped down than before? It just sounds more generic and teenage-girl like
Just wonderful. My faith in you was never misplaced.
This album is going to be incredible going by this song..
Chvrches is very underrated and deserves more credit
I love that Lauren's voice sounds much more natural than it did on TBOWYB
slaya771 Yeah I like it a lot, and I'm glad they are doing something different with the production. Feels really fresh.
JonnyOneEyes agree completely. Previously, I always thought she sounded almost apologetic, as if the subtext was something like "sorry I'm not better at this". Now, though, it's more like "you know what...I'm actually pretty decent at this. Let's get a little adventurous, shall we...?".
Yeah lauren's voice sounds amazing here... Not that she wasn't amazing on Bones, but this is even better
slaya771 I don't know. She certainly has improved her singing skills, but on their first album she reminded me of Kate Bush on "The Kick Inside". Her voice just had something youthful that is quite unique and that I now miss.
at least something what to look for in september

What I love is how I had extremely high expectations of this track and it still surpassed them. What an absolute masterpiece.
Nice of this song to start getting air play during my finals week. It was good for stress relief. I feel like this is what "Fight Song" would be like if it was good.
Man, her voice gets younger each new song
I love the lyrics, really good songwriting!
Wow, this feels so new and different! I think I really like it. It's beautiful (and the video is gorgeous). I'm so excited to hear the rest of the album. Thanks so much for your awesome creative work.
Listened to this like 50 times in the past couple of days.
I didn´t know i could enjoy so much a song until now. I truly love how honest your lyrics are, the emotion that you transmit with them, and the beauty of the music.
