I've had this setup for a couple of years, thinking I would use it in my camper. But this weekend I needed to rearrange my in-home video studio for online teaching, and this was perfect for hanging the backdrop curtains I wanted, to shield the rest of my tiny house from everyone's view. (I don't mind standing next to the bed to teach, but I don't want the students to see that!). Anywhoooo ... Great video!!! Helped by having everything needed to complete the project. Cutting the wire was trickier than I imagined. Also, the plastic drywall inserts didn't work with my 80 year old apartment because I think there may be plaster underneath because those suckers wouldn't go any deeper than 1/2 inch. Got it done though!!! Thanks!!!
I did the exact same thing five years ago for an art studio. I am now adding two more mid-line supports to keep the wire tighter when filled with art projects. Would work great for hanging photos too.

Awesome video! Getting ready to hang 3 of these on our new screened porch and I was worried about install after some of the reviews. You made it look super easy!
really informative. I may need to watch it another 100 times because I don't learn too fast. I will be buying these instead of curtain rods or a new closet sliding doors for my kids room. I will be using wood clips or meyal clips to slide curtains back and forth.
I typically use Bulldog Drywall Anchor with #6 Screw for most 1/2" drywall installations. Size can vary depending on the span of your wire and load hanging on the wire. I've found them at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's and on Amazon. Hope this helps!

You might have mentioned that the right post is reverse threaded so as to eliminate the possibility of attaching it to the left bracket. I didn't notice that at first and thought it was defective.
Nearly ran out of cuss words trying to get the right post screwed to its mount. Glad you mentioned it - I didn't know that was the convention for preventing mis-matched parts. Thanks.
Yes, thank-you for sharing your talent in putting this together!! I am imagining that if you do hang curtains from it, they have to be ones that have an 'open clip' arrangement, so that they can be attached to the wire, yes? In other words, I cannot use curtains with a continuous loop needing to be threaded onto the wire...

Oh my goodness thank you so much for doing this! Short, to the point, and very well explained. I can usually follow ikea instructions just fine, but for this item there was waaaay too much left out like the plastic ends and exactly how to tighten the wire.

Good question. Do you know if the walls in your structure have studs? Most homes have them on 16” centers with drywall on the top. If you knock or tap on the wall, if it sounds hollow then chances are there are studs inside. When you drive a nail in does it seem hollow inside? If so, then you likely have drywall. @@diycollaborative The reason I ask is that I'm doing a very short run of these between a window and a set of built-in bookcases for my cross stitch threads. I have a stud finder and it seems to indicate there are studs on either side, but they aren't always accurate. I'll take your suggestions and see what happens! I found your video very helpful, but I have a window that's more than 197 inches across so how would I combine the wires to stretch the length of the window. I recently purchased two packs of the dignitet if that helps.
Keanu Pagan Good Day, I'm not sure what tools you have available but you might try splicing the cables together but this would require some type of fastener at the splice or some method of locking the splice together. There may even be some type of sleeve available much like the ones on each end of the mounts provided in the kit that would allow two cables to be joined together but I've not been able to locate one yet. In any case, you'll probably still have to deal with the area where the splice is not being as small or smooth as the rest of the wire which may create a problem for whatever you're placing on the cable while attempting to slide it over this area. You can find tips on the internet on how to splice rope, wire, etc. The other issue to consider is the total span of the wire and how much weight it can support at the mounting points. You may want to think about just installing both complete sets and have them meet in the middle with a split in the covering or fabric hanging on the wire. Hope this helps and thanks for asking. Let us know how you solve this one. I'd be interested to know more...
This was already installed in the apartment I moved into. How do I easily change the curtains that were left behind? I figured out how to unscrew one side and replace the curtain but can't figure out how to access the curtain on the other side. Thanks in advance!
Hi Don! My husband is trying to install these and for some reason he cut the wire at the end where the plastic tip is. So now the wire is frayed. Is there anyway to repair that?

Don't know if you saw but I had a similar question already and here was a portion of my answer.If you were not going to take the wire on and off the brackets then I wouldn’t worry about it. Once inserted into the bracket and the set screw is tightened, it should be okay. If however you need to come up with something to use in place of the sleeves that came in the kit, here are a couple recommendations that I would consider. You might try using either electrical tape or duct tape to wrap the ends. Another thought I had and I’m not sure of the exact size but I seem to remember that those small plastic coffee stir sticks are about the same size. You might try cutting some replacement sleeves with something like that and see if it will fit on the wire and still slide into the brackets.I hope this helps and thanks for watching my video!

Your video is awesome....very easy to understand, however we just finished hanging two of the systems and while tightening the last one down we noticed that one of the turnbuckles is stripped. Have you heard of this happening before and do you know if will Ikea replace it?
Thank you! They actually have a replacement parts kiosk in most locations or you can take the broken part to their Customer Service station and they should help you out. I’ve had great luck getting spare parts etc. from them.

I have a question for you, what did type of wire cutters did you use to cut the wire? I only needed a little of the wire and we have tried 2 different types of wire cutters and neither have worked!
Hi, thank you for your video, it is very well done and easy to understand. I do have a question: I want to mount a pair of those on 2 walls, that are facing each other. But one of the walls is the roof, so it's angled. Like this, if you look from the side (dotted line represents the wire, the "I" and "\" represent the walls): I-----\ So one of the two brackets should be installed at 0° angle and the other at about 110°. Is that achievable?
I opened my forever ago and then realized I wasn't going to hang it for awhile. Somewhere in the shuffle I seem to have lost the plastic sleeves you were talking about that go on the end of the wire. Hello Elizabeth, I checked with IKEA and they don’t sell replacement parts but would happily replace kits with missing parts provided you still have your receipt and the purchase was recently made. Check their website for their policy on this. I’m not totally sure you have to use the plastic sleeve as I think their intended purpose is to keep the wire from coming unwound either after cutting or if you need to frequently remove it from the mounting hardware if you were in fact using it to hang curtains on and needing to remove periodically for cleaning. Thank you for your helpful tutorial! I'm in the planning stages for a very low-budget craft room/studio myself, so it was nice to see someone using it for that kind of area. I'm considering mounting these from the ceiling and using the support piece as a corner to create a 2-sided curtained "closet" in the corner of my sunny but closet-less room. After seeing how easily you installed them, I now just have to do the math and weigh the appropriate amount of canvas drop cloth to see if it will max out the weight limit. I don't know if if would be in your realm of knowledge, but do you or your wife have any suggestions on other opaque (but lighter weight) fabric I might try if the canvas is too heavy? I have a question though - It will have to be placed in a location that goes in front of a window - not on top like one would do for hanging curtains. Because of this - I need it to stretch across an area of about 8 feet and cannot place the center support piece. I am only going to be hanging paper from the clips once its done so do you think it will work? ? Or if I go ahead and decide to place it high above the tall window with the central support piece - do you know the the wall above a window (horizontally) is all drywall or is there some kind of horizontal stud above a window? Trying to figure out if I need to buy a drill or want to make those holes up there. Sorry for all this - not sure you are even responding to this anymore but thank you for what you have already - so much better than crazy language-less Ikea instructions!
Hey, thanks for your questions. If you’re only hanging paper it should work without the center support. As for your second question, most windows are framed all the way around and depending on how close the top of the window is to the ceiling, it may also have a vertical stud between the top frame of the window and the header of the ceiling. I don't know if a. you'll even see this but I see you were responding as of a month ago and b. if someone may have already asked this but with 273 comments, I thought asking directly might be the ticket! :) I am putting this up to hang my dog's ribbons up that they've earned in multiple dog sports and there is one thing I need to clarified. You mention you were running your wife's at 140 inches but that ikea doesn't recommend more than 55 inches between supports and I do see that in their diagram. I'd love to go more than 110 inches total but do i then need an additional support? I have one along with the base unit, just like what you had in your video. Also, one more thing....I am putting it into drywall but at the point where the studs are so I shouldn't need anchors correct?
Howdy from Texas! I do see all comments and try to respond often. Depending on the weight of the awards, etc., I think you should be okay. You can always give it a try without the center support but just know you have to take one end of the mount back apart to thread the wire through the extra support. If you have any doubts you might just go ahead and install it. We’ve used many of these to hang grandkids artwork on and have had them from just a few feet long to 16’ and they work great. The 16’ one did have one center support in drywall anchors only and on each end it was in the studs. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting. Please subscribe. Also, if mounting in the studs, you won’t need drywall anchors. Just make sure the screws you’re using fit in the brackets and are long enough to go in the stud. 😊
I bought the package of ends and 3 'middle' pieces to enclose the front and sides of 72" of metal shelving units being used as pantry shelves in a small house. I keep going back and forth on whether to use them or use the ceiling-mount hangers and regular turnbuckle, etc. that I originally purchased elsewhere. One person said you can't use drapes with grommets and that's what I have. Would taking it loose later to wash the curtains be a big problem trying to reconnect the open end?
Please help! My wire does not have the little plastic sheath on the end. I spent an hour on the phone with Ikea trying to find out about it and to see if it should be included but they had no idea what I was talking about. I even had them watch your video at 8.36 min but they couldn't help me. Do I need to go buy something like it or just try without it? Also, the bracket that has R on it is like your left one and vice versa. Does it matter?
+BoulderBieks Hello, They can be installed without the plastic sleeve. They're mainly to keep the wire from unraveling or fraying should you need to cut it. I have seen the kits with and without them. I've used tape, a coffee stir stick and nothing at all. I reversed my brackets simply due to large furniture in the room. The install has worked both way for me and the L/R don't really apply when installing in a vertical position. I hope this helps.

I found a couple of sets of these at the thrift store today and want to use them to hang my quilting rules on the wall on "S" hooks on the wires, which will give me some adjustability. I needed to know how to install them and this video was great. This shouldn't be as bad as I thought. Many thanks!

Great video!!! Helped by having everything needed to complete the project. Cutting the wire was trickier than I imagined. Also, the plastic drywall inserts didn't work with my 80 year old apartment because I think there may be plaster underneath because those suckers wouldn't go any deeper than 1/2 inch. Got it done though!!! Thanks!!!

I did the exact same thing five years ago for an art studio. I am now adding two more mid-line supports to keep the wire tighter when filled with art projects. Would work great for hanging photos too.

I typically use Bulldog Drywall Anchor with #6 Screw for most 1/2" drywall installations. Size can vary depending on the span of your wire and load hanging on the wire. I've found them at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's and on Amazon. Hope this helps!

You might have mentioned that the right post is reverse threaded so as to eliminate the possibility of attaching it to the left bracket. I didn't notice that at first and thought it was defective.
Nearly ran out of cuss words trying to get the right post screwed to its mount. Glad you mentioned it - I didn't know that was the convention for preventing mis-matched parts. Thanks.

Oh my goodness thank you so much for doing this! Short, to the point, and very well explained. I can usually follow ikea instructions just fine, but for this item there was waaaay too much left out like the plastic ends and exactly how to tighten the wire.

Good question. Do you know if the walls in your structure have studs? Most homes have them on 16” centers with drywall on the top. If you knock or tap on the wall, if it sounds hollow then chances are there are studs inside. When you drive a nail in does it seem hollow inside? If so, then you likely have drywall. Now, that said, your walls could be covered in wood slats, with drywall on top or not. Sorry for the complicated answer.

@@diycollaborative The reason I ask is that I'm doing a very short run of these between a window and a set of built-in bookcases for my cross stitch threads. I have a stud finder and it seems to indicate there are studs on either side, but they aren't always accurate. I'll take your suggestions and see what happens! I found your video very helpful, but I have a window that's more than 197 inches across so how would I combine the wires to stretch the length of the window. I recently purchased two packs of the dignitet if that helps.
Keanu Pagan Good Day, I'm not sure what tools you have available but you might try splicing the cables together but this would require some type of fastener at the splice or some method of locking the splice together. There may even be some type of sleeve available much like the ones on each end of the mounts provided in the kit that would allow two cables to be joined together but I've not been able to locate one yet. In any case, you'll probably still have to deal with the area where the splice is not being as small or smooth as the rest of the wire which may create a problem for whatever you're placing on the cable while attempting to slide it over this area. You can find tips on the internet on how to splice rope, wire, etc. The other issue to consider is the total span of the wire and how much weight it can support at the mounting points. You may want to think about just installing both complete sets and have them meet in the middle with a split in the covering or fabric hanging on the wire. Hope this helps and thanks for asking. Let us know how you solve this one. I'd be interested to know more...

This was already installed in the apartment I moved into. How do I easily change the curtains that were left behind? I figured out how to unscrew one side and replace the curtain but can't figure out how to access the curtain on the other side. Thanks in advance!
You should be able to remove both sides by backing out the set screws with a small Allen wrench. Hope this helps!
Hi Don! My husband is trying to install these and for some reason he cut the wire at the end where the plastic tip is. So now the wire is frayed. Is there anyway to repair that?

Your video is awesome....very easy to understand, however we just finished hanging two of the systems and while tightening the last one down we noticed that one of the turnbuckles is stripped. Have you heard of this happening before and do you know if will Ikea replace it?
Thank you! They actually have a replacement parts kiosk in most locations or you can take the broken part to their Customer Service station and they should help you out. I’ve had great luck getting spare parts etc. from them.

I do have a question: I want to mount a pair of those on 2 walls, that are facing each other. But one of the walls is the roof, so it's angled. Like this, if you look from the side (dotted line represents the wire, the "I" and "\" represent the walls):

So one of the two brackets should be installed at 0° angle and the other at about 110°. Is that achievable?

I checked with IKEA and they don’t sell replacement parts but would happily replace kits with missing parts provided you still have your receipt and the purchase was recently made. Check their website for their policy on this. I’m not totally sure you have to use the plastic sleeve as I think their intended purpose is to keep the wire from coming unwound either after cutting or if you need to frequently remove it from the mounting hardware if you were in fact using it to hang curtains on and needing to remove periodically for cleaning. Thank you for your helpful tutorial! I'm in the planning stages for a very low-budget craft room/studio myself, so it was nice to see someone using it for that kind of area. I'm considering mounting these from the ceiling and using the support piece as a corner to create a 2-sided curtained "closet" in the corner of my sunny but closet-less room. After seeing how easily you installed them, I now just have to do the math and weigh the appropriate amount of canvas drop cloth to see if it will max out the weight limit. I don't know if if would be in your realm of knowledge, but do you or your wife have any suggestions on other opaque (but lighter weight) fabric I might try if the canvas is too heavy? I have a question though - It will have to be placed in a location that goes in front of a window - not on top like one would do for hanging curtains. Because of this - I need it to stretch across an area of about 8 feet and cannot place the center support piece. I am only going to be hanging paper from the clips once its done so do you think it will work? ?
Or if I go ahead and decide to place it high above the tall window with the central support piece - do you know the the wall above a window (horizontally) is all drywall or is there some kind of horizontal stud above a window? Trying to figure out if I need to buy a drill or want to make those holes up there.
Sorry for all this - not sure you are even responding to this anymore but thank you for what you have already - so much better than crazy language-less Ikea instructions!
Hey, thanks for your questions. If you’re only hanging paper it should work without the center support.
As for your second question, most windows are framed all the way around and depending on how close the top of the window is to the ceiling, it may also have a vertical stud between the top frame of the window and the header of the ceiling.

I used lineman cutters. The cable is tough to cut.
I don't know if a. you'll even see this but I see you were responding as of a month ago and b. if someone may have already asked this but with 273 comments, I thought asking directly might be the ticket! :) I am putting this up to hang my dog's ribbons up that they've earned in multiple dog sports and there is one thing I need to clarified. You mention you were running your wife's at 140 inches but that ikea doesn't recommend more than 55 inches between supports and I do see that in their diagram. I'd love to go more than 110 inches total but do i then need an additional support? I have one along with the base unit, just like what you had in your video.
Also, one more thing....I am putting it into drywall but at the point where the studs are so I shouldn't need anchors correct?
Howdy from Texas! I do see all comments and try to respond often.
Depending on the weight of the awards, etc., I think you should be okay. You can always give it a try without the center support but just know you have to take one end of the mount back apart to thread the wire through the extra support. If you have any doubts you might just go ahead and install it.
We’ve used many of these to hang grandkids artwork on and have had them from just a few feet long to 16’ and they work great. The 16’ one did have one center support in drywall anchors only and on each end it was in the studs. I hope this helps.

Also, if mounting in the studs, you won’t need drywall anchors. Just make sure the screws you’re using fit in the brackets and are long enough to go in the stud. 😊

I plan to use this system, would you know if i would need the middle piece when only hanging a span of 100"..
I bought the package of ends and 3 'middle' pieces to enclose the front and sides of 72" of metal shelving units being used as pantry shelves in a small house. I keep going back and forth on whether to use them or use the ceiling-mount hangers and regular turnbuckle, etc. that I originally purchased elsewhere. One person said you can't use drapes with grommets and that's what I have. Would taking it loose later to wash the curtains be a big problem trying to reconnect the open end?

Please help! My wire does not have the little plastic sheath on the end. I spent an hour on the phone with Ikea trying to find out about it and to see if it should be included but they had no idea what I was talking about. I even had them watch your video at 8.36 min but they couldn't help me. Do I need to go buy something like it or just try without it? Also, the bracket that has R on it is like your left one and vice versa. Does it matter?
+BoulderBieks Hello, They can be installed without the plastic sleeve. They're mainly to keep the wire from unraveling or fraying should you need to cut it. I have seen the kits with and without them. I've used tape, a coffee stir stick and nothing at all.
I reversed my brackets simply due to large furniture in the room. The install has worked both way for me and the L/R don't really apply when installing in a vertical position.
