Rosemary, with only 3-card support it’s always best to respond with 1NT dustbin bid. Playing Acol, 1H opening only promises 4 Hearts - although of course it could be more. To show a longer suit, your partner can always rebid Hearts after your 1NT.
I recommend always making a three-card raise 1 ♥/♠ to 2 ♥/♠ (when the alternative is 1NT) unless you have three small cards in a very flat hand - Andrew Robson
Caroline, yes that’s a good point. If the opposition intervene then the 1NT response to partner usually shows a slightly stronger hand, maybe 8-10 points, with a stop in the opponents suit. This is because, once there is a bid from the other side, there’s no need to ‘keep the bidding open’ with just 6 points, as partner gets a second chance to bid anyway. Maggie
@@carolinefitzgerald3267 i think you are getting confused. You make an overcall of 1nt with 15-18 points or 16-18 or 15-17...people play different things. Overcalling in a suit you only need 8+ points at the one level and 10+ at the two level...depending on suit quality and length.
@@carolinefitzgerald3267 if the opposition bid on the one level your 1nt would show 6-9 and a stopper in the opps suit and most likely deny 4 card support for partner if its a major....if its a minor i would bid 1nt as game is more likely in no trumps than 5 of a minor.
Moysian fit? What would you do if partner opened 1c, opps passes, and you bid 1H, could have 4 or 5 hearts, (partner doesn't know) opps bid 1D, and I don' have cover in diamonds or probably in another suit for NT, and 6/7 points. Would yuu bid 2H or 1NT?
Looking at the article on dustbin bids for. Maggie Hadley. How can the below be???? Surely If you haven’t 4 diamonds, 4 hearts or 4 spades and you have 6-9 points you must have at least 4 clubs. So why not bid 2 clubs????? 1♣ - 1NT 1NT says “I do not have 4 ♥, ♠ or ♦; I do not have support for your ♣; and I only have 6-9 HCP, so I was not strong enough to bid my longest suit at the 2-level”.
Hi...if you have 3334 shape with 4 clubs...then in Acol bidding 1nt would show 8-9 points and this hand. Bid 2 clubs with 6-7 points and this hand shape. This helps opener to decide if 3nt is on with a 17 count (playing a weak nt openings). If partner bids 2c when you have a 17 count you can just pass...if they bid 1nt....you can raise to 3nt.
if you have three hearts and 6-9 points, would you respond dustbin bin or 2 hearts not knowing whether p had 4 or 5 hearts. Do you ever respond with three of partners suit and 6-9 points. I don’t play 5 card majors. Rosemary.
Rosemary, with only 3-card support, respond with 1NT dustbin bid. Playing Acol, IH opening only promises 4 Hearts, although partner may have more. With 5+ Hearts partner has the chance to rebid them. Hope this helps... Maggie
@@oasisbridgetuition The trouble with this is that if partner goes to 2 H and I only have 2 hearts, then we are still in a moysian fit. I have played so many times where opps have gone 1NT showing 6 - 9 points and left in it, but they don't have cover in a couple of suits then we easily put them down.

Maggie, if the opposition make an intervening bid, does this scupper a 1NT dustbin bid? Doesn't one need a min of 16pts to overcall?

What happens if N bid can you still bid 1nt

With all of my partners, we play 1NT forcing if opener opens a major, openers rebid is 2C and thats where we play. mho
in acol 1nt isn't forcing...if you play 1nt as forcing - as a lot of people do (when not a passed hand) then you aren't playing acol.
In my experience Americans have a hard time understanding the Acol 1NT response.
