This is a great idea. I would love a 3D model like this for every system or console. And then, a 3D model of the millions of transistors inside the chips! Well done.
I was a huge 800XL fan, and I use Blender as a professional 3D animator now. This is just insanely cool, dude... I would go back to those days in a heartbeat if I could!
I know inside the machine and this is accurate. You got to love Atari computers too! I have no idea how what I see is even possible and it must have required a ton of hours
Incredible, Oliver - the 800XL was recently voted the MOST LOVED MICRO of the 1980s by our members on: atari.boards.net We would be honoured if you and any other like-minded Atari 8bit fans would come over and visit us. Once more, our collective praise of the highest order goes to your series of 800XL animations - truly WUNDERBAR! Cheers and long may you enjoy such beautiful projects - these are the 'Kraftwerk' of the video blender world. 8BIT BAZ
+TechZonk Thanks for your comment. Well, I disassembled an Atari 800XL and also removed all electronic parts from the circuit board to scan it as a texture. It also made the measurements a lot easier.
+blender cross Yes, and there are still active communities out there. Especially for the Atari and Commodore home computers. As far as I know there are also a lot of spectrum users maintaining their systems nowadays.
+Oliver Rapp Gerne.
This is just incredible. But all this attention to details and you didn't curve the image on the monitor according to the catode ray tube? I know it is nitpicking, but it caught my eyes pretty instantly.
Well I have to say that is pretty awesome! You have far more time on your hands than I. I'd love to see the PCB scans, so I can create modern CAD files from them. Then new PCBs could be made if required. I scanned the bottom of my 800XL but wasn't quite brave enough to remove the components to scan the top.
+Keith Robinson Thanks. Please contact me by e-mail and I send you the PCBs under creative commons license CC-BY. Later you can send me the CAD files and both of us will befinit :-)

Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes, Atari uses 4164 memory chips and also MT4264 ICs, as in my machine. AFAIR the 4264 are backward compatible with the 4164. See also: www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.php?20078-4264-DRAM-compatible-with-4164
+A Nova Thanks for your comment. The project was entirely done in my spare time and took about four years (with some breaks) for 3D modelling and texturing.
+Alexis Roy Which community do you mean? The german ABBUC e.V. (Atari Bit Byter User Club) is open for all Atari 8 bit machines. Please visit www.abbuc.de for further informations.
+Alexis Roy Please check out the forum at atariage.com/. There are a lot of people from the US and probably also some from canada :-) Just ask for a local meet-up.
funny how the 3d rendered model appears to be missing it's expansion bus blind plate, despite the expansion bus pretty much never being used. lots of them are missing them. kinda weird as there is not much to plug into there.
Amazing. This was my first computer ever. Brings back amazing memories. Thank you for doing this.
Neskutočne urobená animácia a do toho atmosférická hudba. Naozaj zážitok.
Wow! Nicely done! Imagine if this was their ad campaign back in the 80's. I think every home would have an Atari in it!
I love this beautiful machine... long life ATARI !!!
This is truly amazing! Reminds me of Beyond the Mind's Eye. Amazing 3D modeling, and chill music to boot!

nice! would be fantastic 800XL commercial back then!

Allererste Sahne!
Danke :)
Geil du hast mir meine Kindheit animiert. Danke
Amazing work for an amazing computer system!!!! Thank you!!
+EliteZockerWorld Danke :)

I had this Atari, greetings From Chile !
Großartig
Part of me yearns for that time
Dude, I know... Life was so much better then.
Amazing animation! Respect for all details and much time spent on great 3D models!
Greetings for all 8bit machines fans!
Awesome!!! Great work!
Beautiful animation.
+Paul Hruby Thank you :)

Wow.. very nice!
+bryede Thank you :)
superbe!! bravo!
Incredible work! You know the 800XL pretty well obviously! :)
+TechZonk Thanks for your comment. Well, I disassembled an Atari 800XL and also removed all electronic parts from the circuit board to scan it as a texture. It also made the measurements a lot easier.
Beautiful!
What amazing... my first computer. I feel magic when typing code on it.
AWESOME WORK MAN!!!
Wow, this is truly impressive. Bravo!
Nice job - very well done !
..... let my remember how much time i spent with my spectrum machine at this time ;)
+blender cross Yes, and there are still active communities out there. Especially for the Atari and Commodore home computers. As far as I know there are also a lot of spectrum users maintaining their systems nowadays.
Oh!Its all good!
No pokey?
Impressive
Nice! Was eine Arbeit :)
+Tommes Koch Danke.

Wow!
Good job! ... but there is an error. The Atari's switch is off :)
also the border size of the display seems a bit 'c64'ish, not atari-ish :P
Parabéns!! :)
Fantastic video thank you very much for creating it! Are you making another?? 1200XL or 130XE perhaps? =)
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I've little spare time. Next I try to finsh my 3D model of the Atari 1050 drive mechanics.

Amazing!!, please, do that for a commodore 64.
there’s a typo on one of the chips. it says: SINGARPORE
The memory array is 8 chips of 64 k x 1 bit each ! (not 8x 8k) ram 4164, same for C64 !

Gorgeous. How long did this take to put together?
+A Nova Thanks for your comment. The project was entirely done in my spare time and took about four years (with some breaks) for 3D modelling and texturing.
Wow, what a labor of love. It shows!
Did you use PovRay? PovRay can do rendering of boards.
No, it's entirely done in Blender 3D with the cycles render engine. I didn't use any specialized software for the PCB.
WOW! :-)
+Thomas Schulz Danke. :-)
Bad ass!!!
Do you think i can be in these community even if a have an Atari 400 ? :-)
+Alexis Roy Which community do you mean? The german ABBUC e.V. (Atari Bit Byter User Club) is open for all Atari 8 bit machines. Please visit www.abbuc.de for further informations.

+Oliver Rapp thank you !
not a self-portrait tho. :P it would probably take the thing a week to render a single frame of this movie.

error. that big ass piece of aluminium inside of it went hudini.
other than that.. kicad 3d pcb viewer on steroids. :P "now shows the whole product, not just the pcb" :P
😧
