"Pain is weakness leaving your body." "Pain is my foot in your ass, Marie." "Hey, if you can get your leg up that high, I say go for it." *turn down for what* That was so sweet and badass at the same time.
The scene where Marie says she looks like a nurse changing bed pans, feeding soup because of her shoes turns into exactly what she ended up doing for Hank. Now that her entire family is gone she may also have the 16 cats.
@@suchadamilanata9955 this is an old comment, but they were referencing the scene where Marie says the style of her shoes suggest she's a nurse who has to feed soup to old people and change their bed pans. after hank's attack, she DOES change his bed pan and serve him soup. op was pointing out that marie's "joke" turned into reality.
It was both Marie’s and Hank’s most redeeming moment. It showed Marie to be a selfless, supportive, loving wife, and Hank to be a vulnerable, honest, reflective man.
I think it's very interesting that Marie shows arguably the most hate of all the family members toward Walt in the end. It shows imo that she has a deeper understanding of Walt's evil than the more inherently inncocent Hank or Skyler.
Hank faced this evil every day but he couldn't believe that Walt was that way. That fateful read on the toilet was the ultimate betrayal to him. That's why he had the panic attack on the way home.
Both have a personality with ego and pride, which makes them try not to understand others. This causes them to justify their actions while judging others actions, and don’t try to understand each other. This probably caused Marie to not think about Walt’s reasoning (which were also just justifications of evil deeds) and just hate on him.
Incredible that Skyler became such a hated character on the show - I always saw a strong woman who had a lot to deal with - between her husband, sister and later her boss, she was constantly being gaslit and lied to ! Not to mention having a baby and raising a teenage son with a disability. i want to know how many audience members could deal with all that
True. A lot of people hate Skyler but at least she had a reason to suck. Her son was screwed over while he was still in the womb, her husband got cancer and became a meth kingpin because of their financial problems, her daughter will never know her dad as anything more than a drug lord, her brother was executed by people her husband do business with, all after she made the mistake of marrying a mild mannered and extremely overqualified chemistry teacher
She was very flawed but she did love Hank, Walt, Skyler, and the kids very very much. She was always there for them. Even though she was very troubled she was kind deep down. I love her and Skyler, even if a lot of people can’t empathize with them.
Marie is awesome. She always supportive and figures out walt is nothing but a liar and truly evil. Also i hate skyler with a passion but that my opion,
I'd say Lydia is a sort of second mirror for Marie's character. Just like Walt has other characters who mirror him, Marie can have multiple ones. The connection between Marie and Lydia through these sweeteners shows how people who might seem completely different from one another actually share certain characteristics and might have *been* one another had some or several things gone differently in their lifes. They are both kind of stuck up, both obsess over hygiene and appearances and seem kind of unsympathetic at first glance. I thi k the use of such sort of mirror images really is used throughout the show to prove that good is never as far from evil as we might hope to believe. Same goes for Jesse and Todd. They might seem like polar opposites but especially Jesse murdering his second mirror Gale Boetticher seems to suggest that Jesse and Todd aren't as far apart character wise either. Todd just adjusted his morals and lifestyle much more to the ones of his uncle. But Jesse never got so far because he was introduced to a mirror father figure: Mike (although he did admire Walt for some time in a similar way to how Todd does, especially before Mike came around). And so on. If you think about it, breaking bad really is much of a story about isomers, like the second (!!!) episode suggested. You can analyze the whole show using this central theme or paradigm. (i hope this kinda rant made sense and gave you some material for thoughts! )
@@chocofudge1932 That was a great comparison of Marie and Lydia. They both are stuck up, extremely organized and OCD, big egos, hardworking and successful, careful about their appearance. The huge difference is Marie has a heart and conscience, and Lydia does not. Just like that's the difference between Jesse and Todd actually.
I'd say there's a fourth factor that separates them that's rather important: Hank and Mary are doing fine financially, Walter is looking at his family going into debt.
I mean, that is one interpretation byt I'd say it isn't really. When they talk of the cancer diagnosis they explain what they mean and they mostly mention the psychological factors like that he feels that he's running out of time, not the financial factors.
She was adamant on tearing Walt’s family apart. losing her husband was what she got handed to her in return. In the words of lavar ball “stay in your lane”
I couldn’t stand Marie at times but in retrospect I love her. She’s such a wonderful and well written character and even though I roll my eyes at times I can’t help but love her.
This is a well-argued, well-structured video, but I’d like to submit a dissenting opinion: Marie is the moral voice of the show. Hear me out. I know it’s a tough sell. Marie is a narcissistic kleptomaniac who’s created to be unlikable. In season 1, she is the only character whose actions are hardly defensible. She’s self-impressed and inept in social situations. But Gilligan deliberately paints Marie as unsympathetic only to reveal her inner morality later. Why does he do this? It’s a counterpoint to the latent darkness revealed in the other main characters. Walt, of course, is the most obvious example, but this also applies to both Hank and Skyler, who are morally ambiguous. Hank grows as a person through the series, but he also becomes obsessed with his pursuit of Heisenberg. This leads to Walt’s downfall, but Hank refuses to handle the basic duties of his job, even after he’s promoted to ASAC after his success against Fring. His obsession, while understandable, destroys him, and it directly leads to his death. Skyler, meanwhile, is caught in a difficult situation, and she tries to make the best of it, but in the end, her unwillingness to act against Walt leads her to being complicit in his crimes. This unwillingness, stemming from self-preservation and fear, is reasonable from Skyler’s point of view, but the truth remains that she prioritized not having her life thrown into utter chaos above the damage to the world that she could have prevented by revealing the truth of Walt’s crimes to the police before it was too late. Marie, in contrast, has her unlikeable outer layers stripped back to reveal a vulnerable person whose flaws are more superficial. Yes, her constant lying and stealing is immoral, but by the conclusion of the show, she is the only one of the main characters who is completely innocent of major crimes. Even Hank, in addition to the damage he causes to his own psyche, brutalizes Jesse Pinkman after Jesse and Walt delude him. Marie’s kleptomania becomes less a part of the series as it progresses, and the excoriating rant she delivers to Skyler after finding out her complicity in Walt’s crimes is, though not sympathetic to Skyler’s struggles, completely justified. This change in Marie’s character from Skyler’s annoying, self-aggrandizing little sister to a heartbroken, haunting character who is never involved in the crimes around her but is only the victim of them is symbolized by how she drops her distinctive purple clothing in the final run of episodes. Normally, when a work wants to create a character who’s a complete victim, they make that character as overtly nice and sweet as possible. That Breaking Bad instead decided to make that character the most initially unlikeable of its cast is a fascinating and transgressive decision. Marie is not a “good person” by the conventional definition of the term, but with her character, the show asserts that there’s a thick line between what it sees as minor, unforgiveable faults and faults that destroy lives and ruin communities. Marie, despite how flawed she is and how annoying she can be, positions herself firmly on the right side of that line, particularly in the final stretch of episodes, and the show treats her sympathetically because of that.
I love this comment and analysis so much and as someone who stopped watching midway through season 4 I really appreciate all these perspectives on how the unlikable characters change to help me maybe be motivated to finish the series.
Joseph A. H. She was so bitchy and annoying in the beginning but they kept that later on but toned it down and added some more depth. I liked her a lot after those first couple seasons too
Ace Boogie I don’t understand how most of these comments don’t also hate her, when she told Walter to kill his self that was just the cherry on top of me hating her, I was happy when hank died just so she’d have to cry
I can't help but feel there is some significance in Marie's character being a radiologist (.her job has the potential of giving people cancer but not herself) . Perhaps emphasising the parallel personalities of Walt and Marie as well as the ultimate difference that she has emotional connection to keep her tethered to her true self (ie. The screen radiologists go behind a screen so that they are not exposed to xrays) so that she will not go full heisenberg (ie. get cancer). I don't know just spit balling
I actually thought that Marie was one of my favorite TV characters of all time. I like this video a lot because it gives her character the attention it needed. I also have to mention that Marie's egotistical and disillusion nature gave us some good comical relief in that show. When Hank was injured, Marie stood with him the entire time, even when Hank was emotionally cold towards Marie, and that is what made Marie a likable character.
Daniel Greco Exactly, she has her flaws, but that's what they were and its human to have those things. However, she was never mean or dragged her husband down. She stood by him through everything even when Hank didnt want to talk to her. Big difference between her and Skylar
@@moshak1455 hank wasn't a lying drug kingpin like walt He lied to skyler right through his teeth 24/7 Hank was being bitchy and cold to her..but that doesn't mean he had criminal tendencies Human minor flaws and criminal tendencies are incomparable Do you expect skyler to support walt when she found out he was a drug dealer? If you do then man you surely lack the morals! Imagine if you find out your family member is a drug lord Would you support him?
Women are only liked by how much they let the men in their lives walk over them. Marie was Only likeable when she became Hanks nurse and let him be mean to her while sticking by him. If Skylar had not been so defiant to Walts criminal psychotic behavior, she would’ve been more liked but because she tried to protect her family from the man who protects her family people hated her. Ladies we must learn to be doormats if we want people to like us 😏
I have a theory that Skylar was attracted to Walt subconsciously because of how similar he was to Marie. Even though her sister bothers her, that's the kind of person Skylar is familiar with and knows how to deal with. She'd rather be bothered by a person she understands, than live a joyful life with someone she doesn't
I mean I guess it was that Skyler wasn't annoying, (she was actually a good mother if you take the bitchiness out) but Marie simply is annoying for the sake of being annoying.
I didn't pick it up the first time I watched the show, but last week I was rewatching season 1 and the moment when Walt tries to excuse Marie's behavior by saying "Sometime people do things for their families" made me realize how similar they are. Great video!
I face palmed at the salesperson. "Well, _you_ might be clean. But the last person who tried them on without footies might have had toe fungus. So it's about protecting your feet as much as protecting the shoe."
Not just Marie, I think every main character on the show has "Walter White lite" features, namely, they all "break bad", and further, multiple times, each time breaking a new and deeper level and/or type of bad.
Lol having panic attacks isn't a decline, that man went through serious trauma more than once. Minerals were simply a metaphor for his increase in skill as an agent; focusing on scientific details and minutia that led him to discovering the Gus Fring and Gale Boetticher connection. He didn't get worse, he got better. Finding out your brother in law is the biggest drug criminal in the country is a fine reason to get personal. Hank remains the hero.
Well, I did say there were different levels and types of "bad". To me,Hank's decline was even more overt than Marie's. His initial panic attacks got worse and worse, he went on a clear downward spiral, eventually having to leave his position and got obsessed with tedious, irrelevant minerals. He got worse and worse as a DEA agent. Then he even got worse as a brother in law when his desire to get Walt got more personal than professional. I don't see Hank as a sole hero, either. I'm not sure I see him as a hero at all, though I'm sure most of the characters on the show can be argued to have acted both like a hero and like a villain at times. If Hank is your personal hero in this show, that's fine. To me he was never someone to look up to, not even in the beginning, and his decline as the show progressed was palpable.
If you don't think having panic attacks in traffic, then getting worse and worse attacks that led up to him not being able to do his job and having to quitting El Paso are bad things, then you have a pretty simple view of what "bad" is. To me his panic attacks were indicative of cognitive dissonance he had based on his overly simplistic view of good and evil ("anybody who breaks the law isn't a complex human being, they're like a cockroach that needs to be stamped out") and he even thought that marijuana was something evil and addictive, and that the plant ruins lives simply because it wasn't legal, which Walt and other characters on the show knew to be false. Hank was always kind of douche and a he was even a bit racist with his racially charged sense of humor which may have been part of the reason he couldn't handle El Paso. He did become a sympathetic character after the attempt on his life, but he remained kind of a douche throughout the show, getting worse in a number of ways while descending into a sort of madness. His anger, which was always present in the show, also got worse and worse as the show went on. That's how I see Hank's character. Of course he's more complex than that, as the writers were careful to make all the characters complex rather than black and white, but to me it was clear that Hank did get worse and worse in tangible ways. That doesn't mean he didn't get better in any way; most of the characters had saving graces and moments of being good in some ways too as the show progressed, including Walt.
I never noticed the purple thing (I should have). I'd also argue that Marie has a stronger conscience than Walt. Even in the flashbacks to long before Walt started teaching, he seems to have an insensitivity to others beyond how they make him feel. Walt's jump to murder is traumatic, but he has little real trouble thinking about it prior to doing it for the first time. Marie seems very emotionally sensitive and fragile and so she probably doesn't have the actual ability to go through with the harder stuff. Walt, however, seemed to be looking for an opportunity to not demonstrably give a shit about people and benefit from it.
Theomite -we do get a glimpse of that when in a flashback he’s ‘dissecting’ what humans are made of and it’s Gretchen (gf, still on good terms) brings up the weight of the soul and Walter is perplexed as to that being a consideration.
@doge fm Well, I noticed it but I never NOTICED it as a motif. I thought the show was restricting that kind of thing to the blue meth and Walter's yellow suits.
The shot at 8:52 is so good. When you talk about Marie being a innocent child in front of the criminal that Walter is,you can see how behind their backs they have a background that suits them. For Marie, there is this white frame and for Walt there is a black frame.
You keep convincing me I should watch this show once again; I'm doing that now with Mad Men and it's a whole new experience after seeing all your analysis. Thank you!
It's amazing how Marie went from my least favorite character in the show to one of my favorites in only 5 seasons while remaining relatively the same character.
I always found it interesting that Marie & Walt were always so proud of themselves when they "successfully" hid the ugly truth about themselves to their family members, only to turn around and do everything possible to expose that very truth because they felt they were being ignore or overlooked. Good review. 😊❤️
I know Marie is supposed to be selfish, solipsistic, and loose with ethics. And she is, but I always felt bad for her, it can’t be easy to be Skylar’s sister and Hanks wife, especially when he acts like an ass after his hospitalization. She’s horrible, but she also tries to make the best out of terrible situations. She’s clearly very lonely 😩
@@darkphoenixwizgaming2896 so what Skyler is just supposed to support Walt no matter what kind of crazy criminal and unethical actually got into and no matter how many people he murdered. Honestly Skyler gets such a bad rap people have been so unfair to her. There’s a tax on her are sexist Assuming that she’s just supposed to take a passive role
@@anawieder5003 no she should have supported him in all those years. It wasn't at 50 only that he started hating her. This hatred of his was building itself inside him since many years. Walt never cheated on her. They both are wrong and right from a certain POV
I'm so taken aback by the way this video pertains to me and what I'm desperate to improve in myself. I love the way Breaking Bad helps me through real life, but I never even thought something as simple as this character analysis would bring so many answers to me, honestly. This is like the last piece of the puzzle...Thank you.
Interesting insight, I wrote a comment about what I thought of Maria in the Hank video. The idea that she mirrors Walt is pretty brilliant, never saw it that way
Incredible analysis. I never thought there was as much to her as there is, but hey, I'm not surprised. This is still Breaking Bad we're talking about, the best written show of all time if you ask me. Brilliant video!
Fico Dice If you like slow burning character development shows that focus on character interactions and dialogue between characters, this is the show for you. It’s a slow burn but its always worth it because it leads to a bang every time they build up slow moments. Most definitely a top 3 TV show of all time. Some argue that it’s number 1
I have been patiently awaiting this video. Marie was one of my favorite characters on the show, but definitely not starting out. I appreciated so much how her complexities unravelled, as too her love and strength. Underrated af, and quite the fantastic actress as well. Great video, too. Represented exactly what I saw in the show originally.
This series is amazing, I'd never expect an analysis of Marie to prove to be so interesting and to reveal so much about the other characters. This series really does make you rethink so many aspects of the show. Now can you please, please, please do Saul Goodman.
This one and the other videos I've seen of yours about Breaking Bad are terrific. It's great to see this level of critical analysis applied to Breaking Bad cuz the show deserves it. You trace Marie's character so well, and the 'function' of Marie in the story, as "Walter White Lite", a comparing and contrasting between Walt and Marie. And also between the two couples. And you make a great case about what "keeps Marie tethered to her better side"--Hank's support and their love. Thanks for the wonderful commentary about my fave TV drama.
I always felt there was an intended hypocrisy to Hank's desire to deal with Marie's kleptomania privately (knowingly disregarding the rule of law) while at the same time acting as a (supposedly) objective enforcer of the very same law as a DEA agent. This video's comparison between Walt and Marie just further illustrates that point and draws a closer comparison between Hank and Skyler.
I’ve always felt like a large portion of the way Marie reacted to the unveiling of Heisenberg and the hypocrisy that came a long with derived from the damage to her and Hanks egos. Marie puts Hank on a pedestal and holds him in the highest regard possible when it comes to his work so to find out that the man that Hank had been hunting all this time was right under their nose and the fact that they both were made fools of for a whole year just hurt her ego impossibly so that she could not even begin to rationalize anything in Skyler and Walts favor. The only way for her to regain her lost pride and able to rationalize the pedestal that she puts Hank on, which shattered her world losing it, would be for Hank to put Walt behind bars himself. I know Hank was put in harms way but nothing hurt more than damage done to their pride. Like the video said the purple obsession is like her making the world how she sees fit so when she finds out her world was an utter lie and she was just an puppet in the whole charade it’s like she had nothing.
She is the character who suffered the most by the show's end, she lost her husband, and without his income likely her house and lifestyle, without his emotional support (or that of Skyler, since she and the family moved away) would have slumped further into depression and neuroticism and taken to stealing again, she would have ended up with criminal record and unable to get decent work to be financially stable - unike Jesse, she doesn't get a huge payoff with which to start over, and unlike Skyler, she never learns the full truth or reasons behind what happened to her life, so would like have taken to drink or drugs in order to cope, would probably have become addicted and with drug debts (probably from Jesse's low rent former associates) and ended up on the game, then finally in prison, where she would have been used and abused like hell, and either just commit suicide or go through a gradual transformation like Jesse did. I would actually have rather seen a sequel like this than a prequel about Saul Goodman. Bonus points if she moves to Gotham city and becomes a female Joker.
Yokai Na, with her husband an FBI agent killed on the job, there would have been pretty good compensation...plus life insurance. Middle class folks don’t usually skimp on that. And she had a decent enough job herself, remember...it’s not like she was a housewife. I do agree, that she probably would have had a hard time dealing emotionally though...without kids to take care of, it’s hard to go on after a colossal fuckup like that.
Yokai You're not giving Marie enough credit. She has her own job as a medical tech, and makes good money. She would probably blossom without Skyler's judgmental influence, and Hank's abrasiveness. She doesn't have kids of her own, so she can focus on herself, which helps with her neurosis. I think she'd do just fine.
I think financially she will be alright as the spouse of a fallen veteran DEA agent in a high profile case not only would she receive a ton of death benefits from the feds for his on durty death but also probably would a special fund from private groups we have set up for this exact problem.
Ugh! I was never able to laugh at anything she did because I found her character to be aggressively unlikeable. Her double standards and selfishness were something I just could not deal with.
Interesting. I hadn't thought of it this way - that the show explored the characters' morals through Marie, rather than Walt early on in the series. That's brilliant.
Thank you for such a good video about Marie, an overlooked character in the series. Even the first time I watched it, I knew that the kleptomania storyline was anything but random.
I've always thought Marie was a very interesting character and deserved more attention, and that her relationship with Hank was very touching... But I'd never noticed the parallels between her and Walter. Great analysis!
Thank you for this!!! I always knew her earlier scenes in the show had significance but i just couldn't really see it. It makes a lot more sense now. And how interesting to see her as a mirror image of walt at a different level.

Shows that even the toughest men and women can fall victim to PTSD
Omg yes
That was also around the time in the show I started to empathize with and root for Hank.
Christian Olaf Rodenhaus-Garzia-Anderson
Exactly!
Understanding can bring two things separately.
Empathy or utter revulsion.

Not to mention having a baby and raising a teenage son with a disability. i want to know how many audience members could deal with all that
Because she's being a passive agressive bitch all the time and she also cheated
Skyler is a brilliant character.
True. A lot of people hate Skyler but at least she had a reason to suck. Her son was screwed over while he was still in the womb, her husband got cancer and became a meth kingpin because of their financial problems, her daughter will never know her dad as anything more than a drug lord, her brother was executed by people her husband do business with, all after she made the mistake of marrying a mild mannered and extremely overqualified chemistry teacher

is there a parallel between Marie and Lydia? Their artificial sweeteners both share a lot of screentime, and I doubt that's a coincidence.
That's a very good observation!!
(i hope this kinda rant made sense and gave you some material for thoughts! )
That's funny
@@chocofudge1932 That was a great comparison of Marie and Lydia. They both are stuck up, extremely organized and OCD, big egos, hardworking and successful, careful about their appearance. The huge difference is Marie has a heart and conscience, and Lydia does not. Just like that's the difference between Jesse and Todd actually.
I used to watch your videos lmao. Were you originally that brony notion guy?
I'd say there's a fourth factor that separates them that's rather important: Hank and Mary are doing fine financially, Walter is looking at his family going into debt.
I think that's covered in the Cancer diagnosis factor
I mean, that is one interpretation byt I'd say it isn't really. When they talk of the cancer diagnosis they explain what they mean and they mostly mention the psychological factors like that he feels that he's running out of time, not the financial factors.

Joshua Fagan --WOW!! Your explanation is amazingly excellent! I never even noticed she stopped wearing purple either! Thanks 🌺🌺
Good job!
I love this comment and analysis so much and as someone who stopped watching midway through season 4 I really appreciate all these perspectives on how the unlikable characters change to help me maybe be motivated to finish the series.

“Hey, if you can get your leg up that high, I say go for it”

I hated Marie for the first couple seasons, but I slowly started to like her as the show went on.
Joseph A. H. She was so bitchy and annoying in the beginning but they kept that later on but toned it down and added some more depth. I liked her a lot after those first couple seasons too
Same. She become more interesting and likable in future season
I'm thinking the turning point was when she got the groundhog to see it's shadow?
I hated her beginning to end lol

I can't help but feel there is some significance in Marie's character being a radiologist (.her job has the potential of giving people cancer but not herself) . Perhaps emphasising the parallel personalities of Walt and Marie as well as the ultimate difference that she has emotional connection to keep her tethered to her true self (ie. The screen radiologists go behind a screen so that they are not exposed to xrays) so that she will not go full heisenberg (ie. get cancer).
I don't know just spit balling
True
I actually thought that Marie was one of my favorite TV characters of all time. I like this video a lot because it gives her character the attention it needed. I also have to mention that Marie's egotistical and disillusion nature gave us some good comical relief in that show. When Hank was injured, Marie stood with him the entire time, even when Hank was emotionally cold towards Marie, and that is what made Marie a likable character.
Yeah, in retrospect, their relationship was really positive in the long term. They had problems, but they addressed them.
Daniel Greco Exactly, she has her flaws, but that's what they were and its human to have those things. However, she was never mean or dragged her husband down. She stood by him through everything even when Hank didnt want to talk to her. Big difference between her and Skylar
@@moshak1455 hank wasn't a lying drug kingpin like walt
He lied to skyler right through his teeth 24/7
Hank was being bitchy and cold to her..but that doesn't mean he had criminal tendencies
Human minor flaws and criminal tendencies are incomparable
Do you expect skyler to support walt when she found out he was a drug dealer? If you do then man you surely lack the morals!
Imagine if you find out your family member is a drug lord
Would you support him?
That’s scene where she gives Hank a hand job because he wouldn’t come home but ends up doing so because of her was awesome.
Nice analysis, I never considered it since I was too busy being annoyed by her.
I always wondered how people hated Skyler so much when Marie was so much more annoying.
I mean I guess it was that Skyler wasn't annoying, (she was actually a good mother if you take the bitchiness out) but Marie simply is annoying for the sake of being annoying.
Martin Luque Couldn’t have said it better.
Marie is loving and loyal. Skylar is hypocritical in every way. That is why Marie is way more loved.
Marie is also hypocritical though.
Marie was a fun character, in hindsight. I liked her scenes.
I agree with you. 😆
Except Hank. Hank bent some rules and even assaulted Jesse, but he's the hero of this show.
“The income I bring in from hand modeling. Where comfortable.” 😂
Vince Gilligan is just a master of that stuff.

“Between the pension and money I make hand modeling...” lol!
I think this is why in therapy after she finds out she is genuinely shocked.
No, Marie is just a gamer. That's why she told Walt to kill himself
'Between his pension and the income I bring in from hand modelling, we're comfortable.'
Hahaha
Jesus, dude
Yokai
Na, with her husband an FBI agent killed on the job, there would have been pretty good compensation...plus life insurance.
You realize that Skyler would feel terribly guilty about Marie’s situation and give her some of the millions she would eventually get from Gretchen
I think financially she will be alright as the spouse of a fallen veteran DEA agent in a high profile case not only would she receive a ton of death benefits from the feds for his on durty death but also probably would a special fund from private groups we have set up for this exact problem.
Now that she's without Hank-it's a shame we will never get to see 'untethered Marie'. That could've been interesting.
