There's a lot of unsolicited rage in these comments, actually watch the video in it's entirety before you start attacking me.
All I've done is give an honest account of my experience with the game. I understand it's in early access, but it is not an exaggeration to say a game I literally (still) cannot play is unplayable. I have faith that the game will get better, but right now I do not believe it is worth the asking price and I think people should wait for it to improve. If you can run it and you're having fun, that's great. But I could not in good conscience recommend the game in the state it's in.
I also showed plenty of footage of the game with the recommended specs, so stop telling me my opinion is invalid because I tested it with more representative hardware first.
I am a huge fan of Kerbal and I want it to be the best it can be. Going into full on fanboy seethe at someone for levelling legitimate criticism at something is not productive.

They're all bots shills and people who are coping with paying 50 bucks for unoptimized garbage, they paid fifty dollars for a game that will be unplayable for two years, if the devs don't literally up and run with the money like I expect them too. I'm too excited, I have this pinned so I can come back and laugh at all these consumer pigs when it happens. I praise you for having faith, it's a virtue, one I have zero of.

That's the problem. They stated that they moved Physics to the GPU, which was the worst choice ever. It's causing the FPS issues for most lower end GPUs.

My laptop has discrete graphics but the problem is, it was a GeForce GT 540M with a whopping ONE GIGABYTE OF VRAM in a laptop from 2011. The iGPU in your laptop probably had more VRAM lol.
KSP was a slideshow. Even with my relatively new build (had it since November) which uses a Ryzen 7 5800X and RX 6700XT, (I'm assuming his CPU is a bit newer than his GPU, since they don't usually age anywhere near as well as the 1070 and 1080 have performance-wise) it slows down a bit. To be fair I'm running just about every graphics enhancement mod available on CKAN including and especially Parallax, which absolutely DRINKS computer resources when collisions are enabled. But, I do kinda need them installed, the vanilla game was kinda acting weird and having graphics glitches with a brand new GPU that aren't there with the mods. Probably devs having trouble getting their software to play nice with AMD drivers as usual.
Wonder how my machine would do with KSP 2? I mean, I'm not gonna buy it right now because in my eyes, 40-something dollars should get you a game that's at least optimized, but I do wonder.

I didn't have most of the issues shown here. I ran the game doing multiple missions for about 7 hours. The main bugs I encountered were strange fairing glitches in the VAB (which was shown near the end.) Instability when coming out of high time warp (1000x+) on the launchpad. The lack of a trajectory inside the SOI of another celestial body (shown in the video.) Clouds make stuff look pixelated for whatever reason, and the last tutorial on how to capture at the Mun had a bug where you'd fail if you deleted the maneuver after finishing it. The saves work just fine for me, I didn't have the arrow bug, and it's been loading just fine. The game plays pretty smoothly for me on high settings, I used a 30-40 part rocket to get a rover to the Mun and the only problems I encountered were the trajectory thing and the map taking a couple seconds to load when you press M. My computer has an Intel I9-9900K and a GeForce RTX 2070. which is a little past the updated recommended requirements released yesterday. It didn't run at a perfect 60fps but it was more than playable for me. I'm sorry to hear that you've been having issues with KSP2. I hope that they're resolved soon.

To be fair, it's pretty much alpha version of the game and on my memory, early alphas of KSP were barely playable as well. On one I literally had game freeze when my rocket was more than 10 objects and I was running at a time rapidly aging Socket 775 Core 2 Quadro machine (those at this point are what, 15 years old?)
It is hard to ask optimisation on this stage, which looks to be quite early and since my work includes testing early builds of games I can tell this - code optimisation and performance improvement is genuinely not the first thing that happens - in reality it can happen as late as in late betas and this EA is not even alpha. I remember case when early build of Space Engineers had a massive memory leak which caused game fill in over 16 gigabytes of RAM and now it doesn't need that much memory to operate at all.
Genuinely I suggest to wait until full release. Do not buy game now - wait until 1.0 release - it will probably be a different game at that point. That's all I can say,

All I was expecting for the EA release was that it was playable on my system (which is no slouch). I had no issue with the bugs. I had no issue with the content on launch. I had an issue with getting barely 20 FPS regardless of my graphical settings. I had an issue with the same bugs seen on the 9th being in the same build of the game released to consumers on the 24th. Performence did chug quite a bit when I built a monster of a rocket to send Jebediah to another galaxy, but I got my frame rate back a bit after I dropped the first stage. The monster did experience some vertical wobble but it wasn't anywere near as bad as what you showed with a much smaller craft(the monster has 511 parts) and was fixed with a single set of struts. The worst bug I experienced was being unable to select anything in the VAB, which was fixed by leaving the VAB and reentering.
It realy feels like they fixed most the performance issues between the version of the game they sent you and the version they released into early access because my CPU & GPU are about two generations old and this point and neither were top of the line when they came out.

As sb who does physics simulations a few things on the gpu requirment. The game revolves around solving differential equations for point masses (rockets cog) with given thrust vectors.
This is usually discreticized to a solver like the verelet or the RK solver family which can be optimized on both cpu and gpu. The problem is that it is not really possible to get much out of the gpu for ODE's because of time stepping. The next discrete time steps depends on the previous one so one thread/core cannot physically start work because the it needs information from the previous one. Compare this to something like a field solver (electrostatics or even a water surface) whose discreete value NOW depends on the value of the neighbours NOW. This allows assignments of cores efficiently.
In a rocket with 1 thruster you have a vector differential eq of 2nd order in 3-dimensions. If you use the RK method and discreticize to 6 differential eq of 1st order the BEST you can do is let each core solve each degree of freedom IF your equations are not coupled. In most cases they are coupled.
I also do believe they could have left the gpu to do verlet or RK on the eq of motion and let the cpu schedule the solutions.
Overall i agree it is not well optimized.
I went in my Cython module and coded a ballistics method with a simple drag and Magnus model (simplified toy model for simple dynamics. Not directly solving the NS eq) and managed to do 1000 iterations in 40 ms which is around 2500 fps on a single cpu core at 4.85 Ghz. So to scale down to 25 fps i would need to have around 100 objects each contributing to the dynamics of the system (~600 degrees of freedom). And this is on a single physical cpu core.
Mind you this is IRRELEVANT from screen resolution, when it comes to spatial discretization.
But if the solution timestep they use is the current fps number ^-1, (which it probably is like gta5 for e.x) then the solver waits for the gpu to update the frame, takes the time it took for the update, passes it to te solver which solves the coupled ODE dynamics, then passes the solution bk to the gpu to render it as the next frame.
Overall impossible to tell without telemetry. Id have to test it myself but i don't wish to buy the game in its current state.

    • @oasntet
      @oasntet Год назад

Of course, thrust isn't applied to a rocket's COG, because each part is simulated independently. That's why part count adds exponential* time to each iteration, and KSP1's single-threaded bottleneck needed to go.

I have access to another, more powerful computer that can run it, but there are still noticeable performance drops when a planet is in sight. I think something about the PQS rendering must be broken.
I’ve run into quite a few other problems. I got kraken’d in Munar orbit. When I dropped out of timewarp, my Skipper engine popped off and my orbital speed evaporated. I also lost all orbit lines after landing and taking off from the Mun, and the launchpad water deluge thingy was following me around.

Even though I thought it was a bit steep being early access, I wanted to support the devs. Also I knew that the game was probably going to get quite frequent updates, and I wanted to be there to see it from the start. :)

    Fifty five quid. Really.
I run DCS, it has physics, destruction, aerodynamics and even ballistic trajectories for weapons, avionics, radar, infrared. It looks close to photo real and has weather etc. Ok, you don’t build your craft, so one for KSP2. But I run it in 4k on a 2080Ti with up to a hundred different elements on the ground and in the air. It also doesn’t have the range of scales that KSP2 does (from metres to light years). Still, it does have a healthy range of centimetres to hundreds of kilometres. Many people complain about the performance of DCS and it’s currently only running on one core of our CPUs, apparently. It’s code base is over ten years old and about to be updated, reportedly. But what it does, physical and graphics wise is certainly within the same area as KSP and it’s performance is so, so much better. On my old machine at 4K I run at about 50fps as an average with occasional dips to 10 when I’ve overloaded it. KSP2, on RUclipsrs machines which meet the ridiculous suggested specs has KSP2 dropping to seconds per frame. And that’s a quote.
Disappointed? Hardly covers it. KSP1 pulled me into gaming as an older person and I spent many thousands of hours in it, stock, modded out the whazoo and eventually a ton of time in real scale solar system. Which is hard. Real gravity and real distances follow the square and cubed rules so something twice as far, for example, takes six times the fuel/effort to get to.
So I could almost be considered a KSP stan, but the reports and the price for KSP2 mean I’m staying away until it gets both better and cheaper and I have concerns it won’t last long enough for that to happen.

    I... wow...
I'll be honest, since the Take 2 acquisition my attitude towards KSP and then KSP 2's development has been a bit wary. They are different teams, so it's unfair, but to me it coloured the attitude taken towards the now series. Coupled with the very optimistic launch date being pushed back so dramatically with more and more feature loss I've been worried about the state the game would ship in.
But this is sadly worse than I expected. If PCs that meet the recommended specs can't even run the game smoothly or reliably one has to wonder how they've been testing it. Hopefully this is going to be a No Man's Sky situation, that game ran about as well on launch and was missing lots of features.
Also, I'm not a game developer but I am a software developer. At first I thought the tip hangup preventing the game from running was a pretty simple oversight but if a clean reinstall didn't fix it and you have to physically power down your PC to get around it I can't begin to imagine what the error is. Odd to make a feature like that your load-bearing coconut. The devs have their work cut out for them...
