A game that really doesn't need much of an introduction. Making the list of 1001 video games to play before you die, Centipede is a well-known classic.
I don't always buy the colorful approach to gaming as an actual INTENT to attract more female gamers. Sometimes it feels like they were looking for a reason why it attracted more females AFTER the fact. What do you think?
Centipede is a fast-paced shooter set not in space, but out in the garden. Sort of. But yeah, knock out the centipedes, spiders, fleas and scorpions and somehow cultivate your field of mushrooms. It's got a nice beat going on (sound of centipede feet?) and other sound effects which are completely identifiable even over the din of an entire arcade. The dropping flea sound? Loud & clear!. The Spider jumping out to surprise you - also comes with memorable sound. A classic of the Golden Age for so many reasons.
