- Ford announced today it is returning to one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world with its new Ford GT race car, based on the all-new ultra-high-performance supercar that goes on sale next year.
The Ford GT race car will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans - referred to by many as the Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency - starting next year. Revealed today at the famous circuit in Le Mans, France, Ford GT will compete in the Le Mans GT Endurance class for professional teams and drivers (LM GTE Pro).
The new race car - a further proof point of Ford innovation - is based on the all-new Ford GT supercar unveiled in January. Both the production car and race car will arrive in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford went on to repeat its victory at Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

A little late but please permit me this moment. In 1966, I was a 13 year (bi-lingual) American kid in De Gaulle's post-War France for most of Summer vacation. Homesick, for sure... and surrounded by French cousins who lived and breathed "Les 24 Heures du Mans". Oh, my what a moment when the Ford cars delivered that victory. Some 50 years later, this year was just as sweet. And so now with this testimonial to my version of that day 50 years ago, I can once again assure my Bride, my kids and my therapist that it "just isn't my fault" that I have gone from Celica's to Supras to the Lotus Esprit to the M3, the Viper and now the convertible 2014 Corvette Stingray (apologies to Ford). It was all the Ford GT's fault that Summer in France. Toujours...

Notice the Gurney bubble on the 1967 car to accommodate Dan Gurneys height. That's where I got the idea for my Barrett bubble on my corvette.

Technology has also come a long way, and all the car manufacturers are sharing/copying designs while fords may not have the build quality of some German or Japanese vehicles, they're getting better overall I think. Doug Bankhead back in the day henry ford had the gt40 created to humiliate ferrari on the racetrack after enzo ferrari screwed ford over in a buyout bid, hence the prancing horse reference...
fabulousprofound Yes, I know the long and storied history of the GT40 ( and the Shelby Daytona Coupe for that matter ) but as a Mustang fan I tend to see everything through a certain lens. I've since read on some other sources that is supposed to be a reference to the Ferrari "prancing horse". Still though, it would be great to see an "independent" Mustang effort possibly in the GTE-AM category.

I really wanted to see a V8 in the car, that sound would be mega.
I won two Championships with a 67 Mustang. In the states when I went to Murray Auto Supplies to buy parts for it they laughed at me, and said that while made a lap, the Camaro's would complete 2... actually that nevet hapened and every time I won, i used to send them the newd paper articles. Though it was pretty hard to mantain the car in the curves, I enjoyed contrlling perfectly all the splips.

I really don't know what to expect. since the initial launch of the GT's in the LeMans in the 60's, the GT has lost two cylinders. there's really no reason why Ford, who's known for the big American V8, should put a V6 in their supercar. that could be the big fatal mistake.

Indeed. I was born in 1959 and love the original GT40. The 2005 version was pretty bad ass too. But now that they are returning to Le Mans, I'm going to get tickets next year.

Daytona was a practice run, to get us ready for the big show at Le Mans. I hope they figured out most if not all of the gremlins going forward. Must have had a British guy helping with the electronics on this......
+cakraft24 The truth is most racing tech comes from England. All F1 teams are based in England and the Ford GT will be built by Multimatic England while the street version will be built in Markham, Ontario Canada also by Multimatic. Multimatic also builds the Aston Martin Vulcan street and race car.
+Bob White The truth is when we REALLY want it done right, we do it ourselves. Just like the first FordGT project. The Brits made a mess of it, then Holman and Moody with Shelby straightened it out. Auto Tech in the US is second to none.

Joseph Neufeldt I don't see anyone telling the story. So I'll tell it since it's so great. Back in the 60's Enzo Ferrari was looking to sell Ferrari to Ford. When Enzo found out that they were not going to let him continue to be over the racing division he backed out of the deal. This was after Ford had spent millions auditing Ferrari. In return Henry Ford II sought to build a Ferrari killer. The GT40 was Ford's answer, and it won the next 4 consecutive Lemans before retiring the car.....Until now.

christian ruiz Ford didn't race in the Lemans before the GT40, and hasn't raced since. Just those years. Ferrari has been in it every year, and only has 9 wins. If you can't understand why that's crazy I don't know how to explain it for you.

The C7.R just won GTE Pro at Le Mans today, next year its time for the Ford GT to return to Sarthe. Time to get some American cars back in European motorsports, which, let's face it, are much more exciting than American events.

If one can't respect this company for what it did back in the 60's than clearly there's an issue. Yea Chevy is known to give Ford a run for its $ but at the end of the day the accolades that Ford had/has/will accomplish Chevy can't match it. Just the 1,2,3 finish by the GT40 speaks for itself.
ROFLMAO at the comments. No the Ford GT is not going to win Lemans...........ever. Best Ford could hope for with this car is a first or second place in their car class. It's the prototypes that have been winning Lemans for the last 30 years.
Joy. The French marques will surrender almost immediately. Ferrari will battle for a while, but end up painting Ford symbols on their cars and pretending they were fans all along. Porsche will battle it out, but ultimately succumb to the overwhelming industrial might of Ford's muscle heritage, while Jaguar fans sit on the sidelines remembering a time they were part of the Ford empire. Oh what a time to be alive, Ford GTs at Le Mans again.
