Nice one Dan, you’re doing awesome, learning and getting great advice is so cool, thank you for sharing your experience with us. See you soon take care and stay safe loves from kiwiNZfamz❤😊👍🤗🇳🇿
May I suggest you checking out my self reliance, he has built a few log cabins, and does have the method for doing so. He also has built them on his own, figuring out a block and tackle system to lift the logs.
If the back of the old cabin had been rotten, it was likely due to water rolling down the hill behind and infiltrating the cabin. Shouldn't you do a drainage trench along the back wall, directing the water to the sides? Loved that you read the comments about the cinder block fix.
Awesome work so far. Cant wait to see you build your own cabin. Make sure to keep all those nails to make something in the forge in the future. Erik grankvist is a good one to check out. He built his own by himself.
Hey Dan, this was a great video, I am so impressed with your work ethic. Glad to hear that you realize how blessed you are to live in such a beautiful environment. It appears that your saw's chain may be a little loose and needs tightening as I could see quite a bit of slack in it. Take care of that back, injuries are so slow to heal!
Hey Dan what a nice area you are in - It's so beautiful and peaceful and perfect place for a nice cabin. It's a lot of work that you are doing but in the end, it will pay off as your cabin will be awesome. Thanks for sharing your awesome cabin build
I loved this. Can't wait to see more soon. Thank you. PS: I just ran across "Matthias' Cabin Chronicles" episode "How I'm Lifting Heavy Logs on my Log Cabin" He uses a technique he learned from "Erik Grankvist" channel. Both of these guys are young men, like you, but are further along in log cabin building all by themselves. I Do hope you can find these youtube videos; they are fascinating, as is yours. best
@@danvanstralen It has occurred to me while watching more videos of cutting and shaping logs that those logs you cannot use over could be used by you to practice on. You know cutting the notches on two otherwise unusual logs to try dry fitting them. One day you will need to know and this might save you from messing up a good log while learning. Just a thought. Cant wait for Sunday morning and your next episode. Pat
What a goal to have, so good. Try and watch the Vanwives, down there in Nova Scotia, they are renovating a lake cottage now and renovated a2 bedroom house out in the woods in 2021 . Inspiring as you and your family are in these Canadian lifestyles , back to the land. TY
So Dan, I can remember the day I injured my back for life building my kids swingset / playhouse in the garage because it was raining and then carrying it out into the back yard the next day assembled. Be careful, you're young, strong and willing, but it doesn't take much to create a back injury carrying those weights if you've not worked your way up to it. Better to create a harness and drag it bouncing across the terrain. I put pillows on my back to carry it out thinking that made it better. Half way out, I realized my mistake.
I'm 75 and I can assure you there is nothing unusual about frost the end of May. Old timers never planted until the last full moon in May was done even if it came the first of June. We had a threat of frost up North of you but it didn't happen so I imagine you were safe also. The greenhouses seem to start selling a bit too early in my opinion but they don't ask the old guys for their input. lol You get used to that when you get old. You are working up a good channel. Thank you.
Your body will regret lifting these heavy logs one day. Mights suggest a back brace or something-when your legs are shaking, it’s probably too heavy. Hernias happen easily, too. Making me nervous!
Hi Dan, great work... if you haven't come across Dick Proenneke's 'Alone in Alaska', you should check out his cabin build. All done alone with hand tools only. Should be some great practices. He's the GOAT!
I think that there should be a raised floor on beams supported by concrete blocks on a slab (3’ x 3’ ?) . This will shift in the spring when the frost comes out but will prevent rot.
I came here to say the same thing. On James’ channel, My Self Reliance, he has now built multiple cabins/buildings by himself. Might as well use the methods he has over time figured out that work best for one person doing everything alone.
Love watching Pete an Dan working together before Pete leaves on his adventure
Here before Dan's youtube channel blows up!

Yes he needs to see how he lifts the logs himself and cali supervised all his work.
YES, I agree totally! Shawn James is one of my favorite youtube shows, that got me hooked. Ive been watching his shows for years, love, love!

I didn’t think of that! I will definitely try putting in some sort of system to prevent that in the future! 👍🏻
Great job! Your work ethic is rare these days. The cabin build is a great series!
Thank you very much! I’m glad your enjoying it!
Since watching your wonderful family on here, I'm excited to also see what life has in store for you. Inspirational. Blessings are sent your way.🙏
Thank you so much!
You are in paradise. I can’t believe how awesome this will be when you’re done.

Thanks! Will do!
Ah, to have a 19 year old back again…savor it!

Great video. So happy to see want to restore old things.
Dan, I suggest you clean your path as much as possible to prevent you from tripping with those logs on your shoulder.
Will do thanks!

Good video, and you are regular with them. I look forward to seeing them pop up after Church each Sunday. Stay healthy.
Thanks! I’m glad your enjoying them!

Good to know and thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely make sure to watch closely for frost until then! I’m glad your enjoying the channel!
This is really a lot of work but you are coming along nicely.

Good stuff continues Dan, nice job! Don't over do it with those heavy logs, it's not worth injuring yourself!
Thanks I’ll be carful! 👍🏻

I really enjoy watching your vids. Keep em coming. ❤❤❤
Thank you! Will do!
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
How difficult would it be to install a concrete floor and foundation?
I think that there should be a raised floor on beams supported by concrete blocks on a slab (3’ x 3’ ?) . This will shift in the spring when the frost comes out but will prevent rot.

Thank you will do!
Watch Dick Preonneke at twin lakes alaska. he built a cabin and shows you how to notch logs for a cabin
One of my favourite movies! I hope I can get that good one day!
Watch Shawn James
I’m pretty certain the family watches “My Self Reliance” as they had Shawn James on their EFRT channel
