I turned printer upside down, drilled a 1-1/2" hole through the bottom base plastic straight below the gear and was able to to work on it straight on.... worked out great. no additional harm to unit... Way easier than trying to look and work upside down through mirror.
That's what that guy in the other video did. I can feel that the rollers don't move. I'm happy to drill a hole in the bottom of the printer. It's a little payback for the frustration I've been having over the issue.
I looked for and found a couple of other videos for this problem, as it recently started on my printer.... but your video was by far the best as it showed VERY CLEARLY, the teeth on the metal shaft for which the PLASTIC gear you moved to the left. in the other videos it was not apparent in them.... I cut my teeth in the IT world starting with the old dot matrix printers and then laser and ink jet and line printers.... been in IT for 23 years, last 15 or so in the IT Systems Administration/help desk. I greatly thank you for the EXCELLENT video. Tomorrow I will be tearing down my printer to get to that area to apply some super glue, as I am sure that the plastic teeth on the inside of that little plastic gear were/are stripped. Keep up the great videos....(subscribed..) thanks again
Michael, thank you for taking the time to send me your comments. It is very much appreciated.I also cut my teeth on dot matrix printers, thermal heads, and some insanely designed laser printers before HP came out with the LaserJet III. You don’t need to tear down the printer to perform this repair. The gear is accessible from the front of the printer after you remove the paper tray. The video was shot using a mirror to show the affected gear. If you tape a thin plastic mirror to the bottom of your printer where the paper tray sits , you will see it too. To apply the glue, I found it easier to flip the printer upside down, gravity will make it easier to apply the glue to the shaft. Thank you for your comments and good luck! Mine is still running daily. I just picked up some more ink cartridges- $55 for two black XL cartridges at Costco! I can’t remember them being so expensive the last time I stocked up.
I have the same problem, your description and video instruction is very very helpful for someone who is not good with just direction. I need to see the video (step by step). Thank you.
Thanks for this awesome simple way to repair this broken connection of the shaft and the plastic gear. Amazing what this type of video can help us in terms of unnecessary waste (the printer itself and the time and money to go and buy another printer). It worked like a charm for me and the printer is back doing the job for the whole family. Thanks so much for your time to make this video and sharing it. Kudos.
YES!!!! A slipping drive gear was our HP6500 Network printer's problem as well!!! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this!!! Had to watch the video twice to realize you put a MIRROR on the paper tray to see the mechanism!! Problem resolved!!! Thanks again, and cheers, Francisca aka auntifranny
Thanks much for the detailed look at this issue! Fixed it for my Photosmart 7520. I went straight to JB Weld because I didn't want to risk other glue not working. Also drilled a hole in the bottom of the unit so I could see it better. Great fix!
Thank you very much. Just fixed the HP Photosmart Premium c309a which I bought for $ 8. The price was so attractive due to the paper pick error. You helped me a lot.
OMG it works. I used Gorilla glue like you mentoned in the video. I waited 2 days before trying to be sure the glue be very strong. Thank you very much. You saved me to have to buy another printer. I love these one HP photomart 7520 and just bought a buch of 10 cartrige of ink last month. Happy to not loose it. thank you 10/10.
THANK YOU ! 2 1/2 years later, your upload is still helping. I tried superglue but the gear was too worn to secure it with the thin adhesive. used E6000 on the second attempt...works perfectly! HP photosmart 7525
Thank you!! RUclipsrs can fix almost everything. Searched everywhere on HP site and other "tech" sources, nothing. search here and boom, ive fixed my printer in under an hour!
Great ! Thanks to your tutorial , i have fixed my HP Photosmart Premium C310a. Very very good !!! Just a mirror and superglue. No need to disassemble the printer
Thanks for the video and info. We had similar problem with a 7515. Used a plastic/metal epoxy and applied it with long pliers holding a short piece of toothpick. Working great.
Where do I send the beer? Just opened a new old stock box with this printer, and it failed feeding paper. Found your video, applied the fix and voila, Bob's your Uncle! Thanks for posting this, and if your near the Boston area, your next beer is on me.
Thank you so much for this solution, This was the problem. I used Araldite 2011 and wait 10 hours for drying. Good Vidéo and good Job.Printer HP Photosmart C309g .Regards.
technical 00003 - thank you for your comment. I didn't need to disassemble the printer to perform this repair. I placed a mirror where the paper tray sits so I could see the slipping gear. I found it was easier to tape the mirror in place, then flip the printer upside-down when I applied the glue to the gear. I found this same gear assembly in other HP ink jet printers - and the same gear failed on those too!
Hi Mandy, if you remove the paper and put a mirror where the paper sits, you’ll see the gears and paper drive mechanism. If you tape the mirror in place, then flip the printer upside down, you’ll find it easier to apply the glue.
I have done this twice now (7520) and it didn't last very long for me either time, once with JBWeld and once with e3000. Sadly I think I'm going to have to junk the printer. I don't do a lot of printing at all. I'd say at best, each fix only lasted 20 sheets.
I have an HP All-in-One 6210 and I can see that the gears work when there is no paper, but once the paper is installed they won't turn. There is no "bar" where I can move one of the gears to try any gluing. Do you know what is causing the trouble? TIA.
Hi Early Hours. If you remove the paper tray and place a flat mirror in that area you will see the drive shaft and the gear that is slipping. My video was shot using the mirror in that position. Good luck.
I'm having this same issue. Thanks for identifying the problem. As someone else asked -- how long did this fix last? Still working for you? Thanks in advance.
John, thank you for your question. The printer is still going strong 8+ months later. I did the same repair to another HP printer about 6 months ago, and it also is in daily use. One trick I may have not mentioned in the video: I taped the mirror down, then flipped the printer upside down so that I could use gravity to apply the Gorilla Glue to the shaft. It was easier than to try to apply it using a stir stick.
Hi Edward, remove the paper tray cover so you can see the paper and how the pinch roller drops down to feed the paper. Place a mirror on top of the paper and you’ll see the drive gear in the mirror. That’s how the video was shot and how the repair was made - using a mirror to locate the drive gear! Good luck with your repair.
J MAN , if you remove the paper tray and place a mirror where the tray lay, you should see the gears near the drop down feeder. The paper feed mechanism seems to carry across all HP Photosmart printers.
Sounds good. I thought there might be some way to easily disassemble the printer to fix it. Will use the mirror option and hope for the best. Thanks for the recommendation.
Sergio, you don’t need to disassemble the printer. Remove the paper tray and place a flat mirror where the paper tray sat. You’ll see the gear in the mirror. Once you’ve located the gear, tape the mirror in place and flip the printer upside down so when you apply the glue to the shaft it will stay there long enough for you to slide the gear back in place.
Hello, I have the same problem but I do not speak English and I do not know what you really do to solve it, you could write the process in a brief comment so I can translate it, thank you very much
1: Place a mirror on the paper feed tray so you can see what you are doing. 2: Gear on the silver drive shaft is slipping. see video for what is slipping. 3: Slide the gear left. 4: Use superglue on drive shaft. 5: slide the gear back into position. 6: wait for glue to dry (1 hour?). 7: FIXED! Also subtitles can auto translate for some languages.
My "NEW" HP 5546 will print error messages etc, but won't print a picture. Tells me that It's out of paper. The whole shit show is heading to the dump.
Hi @johnadams-wp2yb. Your printer is likely looking for photo paper. You can trick it by changing your settings to tell it has photo paper loaded instead of plain paper stock. It should print the picture albeit the photo would be better looking on photo paper.
I couldn't figure out which gear your were talking about until I put a mirror in there and watched it work. GREAT video!
I turned printer upside down, drilled a 1-1/2" hole through the bottom base plastic straight below the gear and was able to to work on it straight on.... worked out great. no additional harm to unit... Way easier than trying to look and work upside down through mirror.
Excellent suggestion Mike K!
I did the same - fabulous suggestion!! Worked like a charm!

Amazing - I was literally hovering over the button to buy a new printer when I found this video. Fixed my old printer and saved £££. Thanks!

Just used this fix and for the price of some superglue stayed sustainable. Thanks for showing.

Thanks for using a mirror!! I watched another video & couldn't tell what exactly he put glue on. I'm now back up & running!
Thanks much for the detailed look at this issue! Fixed it for my Photosmart 7520. I went straight to JB Weld because I didn't want to risk other glue not working. Also drilled a hole in the bottom of the unit so I could see it better. Great fix!

Adam, thank you for improving the post by providing the steps in writing.
Great ! Thanks to your tutorial , i have fixed my HP Photosmart Premium C310a. Very very good !!! Just a mirror and superglue. No need to disassemble the printer
Just did what you showed in the video now my 7520 is working fine again thanks for uploading the video
HP photosmart 7520 - same issue used krazy glue now it works... Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for the video and info. We had similar problem with a 7515. Used a plastic/metal epoxy and applied it with long pliers holding a short piece of toothpick. Working great.
This works thank you!!! I appreciate you showing from the begging so it was easy for me to follow

Thanks Rob for making my day!
I had the same problem with my printer!! You made my day !!!
Thank you buddy!!!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I have clearly extended the life of my printer.
beautykilledbeast thank you for your feedback. Glad it worked for you.
Thanks Paul for the tip on adhesives!

how long did this repair last for you?
piffdaddy420 - it is still going strong 8+ months later.
Thanks ever so much for the help video, fixed my printer but used some araldite instead! 👍🏻
Thank you for this awesome video!!!! After years of problem, now it could take paper normally:)
Thanks for the hint, there was the same problem, I fixed everything. I am very grateful to you.
Thanks a lot. This helped me.
Merci beaucoup ! Thanks a lot ! This help me to fix same problem (paper not loading) for HP b209b printer. Cheers from South of france
Thanks Chuck, glad that it worked out for you.
Thanks a lot!
You realy saved my day. I almost threw my printer away.
So simple and quick solution.
One question, how did you get access gears and wheels in the actual printer?
Hi Mandy, if you remove the paper and put a mirror where the paper sits, you’ll see the gears and paper drive mechanism.
If you tape the mirror in place, then flip the printer upside down, you’ll find it easier to apply the glue.
Thank you for your help!
Thank you sooooooo much. I was thinking of buying a new printer. But now i don`t have to.
Thank you! This was exactly my problem!
How did you get access to it? This is happening to my printer now on my P Photosmart Premium C310a.
Hoye. Gracias eso era justo lo que necesitaba
Mi impresora quedo como nuevo.

How do you get to wherever this is in the printer? The video neither shows nor tells where this drive gear is. How do all you guys know where it is?
Hi Edward, remove the paper tray cover so you can see the paper and how the pinch roller drops down to feed the paper. Place a mirror on top of the paper and you’ll see the drive gear in the mirror. That’s how the video was shot and how the repair was made - using a mirror to locate the drive gear! Good luck with your repair.
I have this problem but do not know how I can fix the gears on my HP Photosmart 7510 as the gears are not accessible without taking the printer apart.
How do I disassemble the printer to get to that part?
Sergio, you don’t need to disassemble the printer. Remove the paper tray and place a flat mirror where the paper tray sat. You’ll see the gear in the mirror. Once you’ve located the gear, tape the mirror in place and flip the printer upside down so when you apply the glue to the shaft it will stay there long enough for you to slide the gear back in place.
