- Ok guys, in this video (second part) i'm gonna build classic drawers bottoms and fit them into the grooves.
For the finish i'm gonna use:
- Osmo 3032 for whole parts
- shellac orange plus liquid paraffine only on the fronts
The drawers pulls will be turned out of boxwood.
I hope you will like it, thank you for your time!
Cheers!
BTW. I don't take orders and usually i don't sell my planes.
The most sure way to get some of them is take a part in giveaways for my supporters.

What does the liquid paraffin do??
Killer job by the way !!
A thing of beauty. Very well done Mr Gakos 👍👏👏👏.
Thanks a lot Jim :)
Love the boxwood handles. A classy touch. I thought you should paint them initially but actually they look awesome with the shellac finish. Great work.
Thanks Paul! I changed my kind, but i can paint them in any time 😁
@@StavrosGakos Jakbyś się zdecydował pomalować to proponuję spróbować tylko fasadę na początku. Tam gdzie łapiesz zostawić. Ciekawy efekt wizualny, tak na moje oko ale wolę klasycznie bez ;)
Pozdrawiam
Piękna robota .
Dziękuję!
Ohh.. very nice tools!!
A handplane finishes flattening and surfacing the panel before the sanding machine operator has figured out which belt to use and installed it.
At least for the first one :)
@@TheJohnreeves That's the thing: I found a lot of operations like cutting rabbets, mortices or tenons are not that much harder or slower to do by hand. Machines have to be set up, or worse, you end up having to make a jig first. But if you're making a lot of identical parts, it does pay off.
@@kaasmeester5903 yeah, that's why I almost exclusively use hand tools. They're not much, if at all, slower or less accurate and they're satisfying to use. Your comment just got me thinking about how once the machine's set you can make a million of whatever it is really fast. Which is why hand tools are ideal for hobbyists or even people selling custom work who don't make a hundred of anything.
Sanding is evil. I have a 30 inch kindt Collins disc sander but I use it to shape wood and metal. Planes yield the cleanest surfaces free of embedded dust. Sometimes you have no choice. For example, in my bevel gages I use infill hardwoods like African Blackwood. You have to wet lap the bronze and Blackwood together to form one surface. Blackwood is tight grained. Wood like oak is not and tiny bronze particles will embed in the oak yielding funky results. Also if you work with sandpaper and exotics you can easily become sensitized leading up to anifaltic shock. That is what happened to the founder of bridge city tools. Notice the absence of infill timber in their current line up? Given the choice I prefer scrapers and planes over sanding
Very good, congratulations
Thank you!
Stavros my master! Now I feel much powerful knowing that I had used the same clamping solution for my table top gule up!
👍👍👍😉
Very nice work in everything you do. Thanks for sharing I liked your little closet full of wood.
Thank you :)
As always superb work. You make it look so easy. Doh! 🇦🇺👴🏻
Hey Mark ;)
Absolutely beautiful cabinet. I can only imagine walking into your shop and I am sure anyone who does would immediately see the beauty in this project. A great eye catcher. Thanks for the work you do.
Thanks a lot Frank!
Awesome Sir
I laughed at your response in the start
Boxwood knobs look amazing
Enjoyed every second
Thanks a lot Scott :)
Uwielbiam patrzeć na twoją perfekcyjną robotę.
Dla mnie to niedościgniona perfekcja.
Awesome!
As usual
Love the Glue-up clamp!!
Wow....and Bravo....rr Normandy, Fra.
I'm glad to see you using the tools you make on something other than new tools. When I saw the extra length of the sides on the drawers, I wondered why you didn't use the full length. It was only at the last moment that I understood.. All that from some left-over pine flooring! You are a wizard. congratulations
😉
Boxwood is lovely to turn - almost like turning aluminium on a metal lathe.
I love turn it :)
Excelente proyecto , buen trabajo a la vieja usanza , con un magnífico resultado final , gracias por compartir sus conocimientos , un saludo cordial y por supuesto un gran like desde Narón , Galicia ( España ) 🤓 😜
Bravo
Dzięki Krzysiek 😉 Pozdrowienia!
Very nicely done!! Call me weird but there is nothing quite as satisfying to me as the sound that a well made drawer makes when you open and close it. I made a wall mounted tool cabinet to hold all my hand planes and it features dovetailed drawers and small turned handles as well. The slight "thunk" as the drawers slide home just reminds me how much effort I put into making them work well
👍👍👍
Thanks, Gakos!
You're welcome AlmiraPlanes ;)
@@StavrosGakos haha thanks!!!

Thanks a lot Monroe ;)
Tak patrzę i myślę niemożliwe czarne wkręty u stavrosa:) a tu tylko uchwycik;)
Haha nic bardziej ordynarnego nie znalazłem 😁
that looks good !;-)
Thanks Irvin!
Beautiful work as always. Cheers :)

Buen trabajo!!
Furniture spray polish works better than a candle for lubing the plane base.
.
Candle works better than any spray.
@@StavrosGakos
NOPE!
The spray enters all the surface imperfections that a lump of candle cannot enter.
So the spray wins!
.
@@niklar55 spray enters all the surface and all area around, that's why simple candle is the best FOR ME.
@@StavrosGakos
The spray will go exactly where its directed.
It lasts longer, as the minute droplets enter to tint defects in the surface.
Candle wax can only sit on the surface.
I've used both, so I know from experience.
Have you??
.
@@niklar55 yes, will you let me use a candle?
Pozdrowienia! :)
Również pozdrawiam :)
Hi! On minute 1:55 ive got a question: the shaving goes straight up because chipbreaker is positioned close to the edge, right?
Yup, you got it 😉
That's not fair! How come you get to use "snap my fingers" magic and I don't? I've tried that for years and stuff in my shop falls apart! Seriously though, this was another really helpful video. Thank you.
Snapping my fingers only works when the dog is on the bed. Even then, only half the time.
Ładniutkie ,
Z czego toczyłeś gałki do szuflad ?
Może bukszpan, ale pewności nie mam :)
Dzięki Obi, to bukszpan 👍
Hey Stravos, why arent you using your own made planes? Is there a specific reason why wood plabes are not used?
Btw Iove the way you taken care of the base movement issue with a single screw :)
Hey Romualdas, there were waiting for sharpening. Thanks :)
Sometime when you have time could you inform us dedicated followers of your channel where you learned your great skill,
. Was it traditional apprenticeship?
Hey Trevor, i was always worked alone in my workshop, that's my apprenticeship :)
OMG Don’t let me near that cabinet! Where did you get that stash of boxwood! I am drooling like an old fat dog waiting of a steak hand out!
hey Dev! i found it on the olx dot pl
👍👍👍
I love the contraption at 3:14. The type reading "stainless" makes it look not-so-old. May I ask who makes it and what it is called?
Edit: I mean to say of course it is a protractor, but what type?
Hey Scott, it is a kind of "no name" protractor. I bought it for about 15 $. .
Excellent workmanship
Spectacular. The attention to design and detail is second to none. Beautiful
Bravoooo!!! Great entertainment man!
Dzięki stary!
I love it. Congratulation from Janauba Brazil. Thanks for sharing.Roberto.
It looks great!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Wow, that beautiful sheen @ 2:17. You're getting close to the Japanese my friend.😊
Золотые руки, Ставрос!

Прекрасно Stavros! Что за древесина? Первую часть еще не смотрел.
Dziękuję! To sosna :)
@@StavrosGakos Сосна? Ого! Чего это я ее не узнал. :))))))

Des tiroirs ajustés avec précision. Ça glisse tout seul. Magnifique.
Thanks a lot my friend!
Always nice to see someone who knows what they are doing using a hand plane.
Отлично получилось.
2:17 - beautiful !
Panel Clamps, making a set tomorrow. Is that screw in the bottom necessary? I’ve seen a number of pine dressers made on the Canadian Prairie made without. Love how those pulls turned out. Very elegant design.
Thanks William! Maybe without the screw they were glued only in the front groove? That's interesting
Just beautiful!
2:15 ooo shiny!
Excellent!
Perfect
top!!
Lovely drawers Stavros. May I suggest that on those beautiful turned boxwood knobs you splice the dowel part, and fit in a wedge- this will give it a dovetail shape and it will never pull out again. Just a suggestion. I really enjoy your videos, that are a joy to watch. God bless.
Greetings from France.
Thank you :)
Those of you that comment too fast need to make sure you watch the whole video. There have been many times during the work that I have thought to myself “ how or why is he doing it that way???” He always brings it home in the end. And if you think he glosses over any imperfections or mistakes you would be wrong. Watch his plane making videos and watch how he overcomes flaws. He doesn’t hide them. Truly one of the best plane makers alive today and a very skilled woodworker. Me personally I would cherish a plane made by this person and be sure that I used it as it was intended! I have this deep feeling that Mr. Gakos builds and makes things to be used! Well done sir! As always much respect from Adam here in the USA!
Thanks a lot Adam! All the best for you 🙂
Beautiful, dude! Really fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
The start was funny 😂🤣🤙
This turned out great!! 😁 Your store of Boxwood is amazing by the way 😯
Thanks :)
Wow! That is A LOT of boxwood! I'm so jealous :D
That wood is garbage for most of us, the end result on the other hand lis a piece of art. Thanks Stavros.
Hey Raif! Thanks a lot :)
Thumbs up for the closed draw opening at the start :D

Thanks Łukasz :) polskie korzenie?
@@StavrosGakos Yes, my greatgrandfather came to Brazil fleeing the First World War. The family has been in Brazil since. Unfortunately we lost contact with our Polish relatives and thus to Poland. Now, after 50 years of my forefather's passing I'm going back and trying to connect to my heritage. Learning Polish being one of my biggest challenges. Greetings!

And that's how you open a drawer without a pull...
Now let's see how long it takes to fill them.
Great job as always!
E aí João Petin, o cara já identificou o sentido correto da madeira para plainar, conhece muito e quando plaina não precisa de mais nenhum acabamento, já está pronta para montar
Love the boxwood knobs 👍
Me too 😉
I have worked in three commercial shops doing millions of dollars per year. I was a CNC operator/programmer. I also did assembly as backup to fill in. We had millions worth of Homag machines from Germany. Our base drawers were melamine stapled together. On other occasions we used Prepeg dowels. It was impossible for engineering to get things right. Drawers were often improperly sized. Bottom grooves were 1/4 inch up from the bottom on under mount guides. Had to redesign on the fly. It was truly painful for someone who dovetails drawers by hand. I would never buy commercial cabinets or furniture. Your wasting your money.
Now! Look at how Stavos does this! 1). All joints are load path locked thru dovetails. 2). Each drawer is not only inset but sized to the opening. 3). There is no Subfront!!!! Overlay drawers are mostly a cop out to hide errors. The front of the drawer is screwed to the subfront. 4). There are no modern drawer runners. Toolboxes like getstners used integral hardwood guides that are silky smooth after 80 years. 5). The bottom is solid wood with expansion controlled in the rear. If a bottom needs replacement, one screw removes the bottom.
We had German wide belt sanders. The last stage took it to 220. The finish had to hand sand back to 180 which mitigates stain blotching. One of our biggest warranty issues was drawer front failures and door failures. Melamine is pure evil and the stub tennon in the door is prone to rotation which either causes the foot to fail or the finish to fail at the joint line. Also the 1/8 inch holding the panel in is often a joke. Old timers centered the panel groove and used full mortise and tennon joints with hunch tennons. These doors never fail.
It is sheer joy to watch stavos making things old school. Making them right in this era of ikea!
I dont think you have a video of it; building your panel clamps that you used to glue up the drawer bottoms might be a good idea for a video 😁
Beautiful job!
Another beautiful project, beautifully done. And the Khaby move! Perfect and hilarious! I laughed out loud! Thank you for making my day! :)
;)
Howdy. I just got to this. I have been working on the floors of our, “new to us” house. It has been a chore. Always good to see you working on something beautiful even if it is as mundane as drawers.
Greetings from the high plains of Texas.
Hey Ryan, thanks a lot 😉
A great video, as always. I'm so envious of your closet full of boxwood. Boxwood here in the US costs a fortune if you can even get it.
Thanks Mike! I like to collect some boxwood :)

Beautiful work, Stavros. Glad to see you back.
Hey Michael :)
Kolejne dzieło !!! Gratuluję mistrzu i nie mogę doczekać się następnego😉👍
Dziękuję Tomasz :)
Those drawers aren't truly broken in until you forget to close one and you bang your knee on it.
I really don't know what do you want to get with this comment.
do you know you can buy real clamps bow???
Do you know clamps aren't the only one way? I like to show an alternatives.
Thanks for pointing out the screws to open the drawers, I was so stressed about how you'd do it 😂😂
Come on! With this sort of good work even a good painters tape taped to the front of drawers can be a pull ;)
The wood is so smooth he could have used suction cups ;)
Painters tape is too obvious ;)
Nice idea Bill! I have to check it :)
True story; up until two weeks ago, the handle on the pocket door to the master bath was a Sheetrock screw on both sides of the door!!!! Laughed so hard at your intro. Very close to home. Love the finish you finally picked out. And the turned boxwood knobs are a classy touch. Thank you for sharing!
Haha that was nice :) thanks a lot Bryan!
