Vinnie Jones`s career, because of the embarassment. Vinnie Jones would never be able to catch Messi, not even with these cowardly assaults that he favoured.
You don't know how they play ball in the barrios. Messi is easily capable of taking wild challenges and there are long complications in youtube that show it.
Vinny Jones is more canny in his play than people dismiss him for, That smile when he tried to out pace the Liverpool defense shows he knew what his game play was and when he was playing outside of it
His ability was average but his attitude was bang on, always played the ball forward and wasn’t scared to make a challenge, loved the one at the end where him and another Wimbledon player 2 foot eachother just to win the ball back
I enjoyed watching this game as a 10 year old. Compared today, 34 years later, you can see that the skill level has improved massively in the modern game. But the lethal tackling has gone down whilst the diving and rolling around on the floor has gone up! Fashenu and Jones would have got red cards today for those challenges!
For sure. I do really miss the intensity and tough play from those times, but the technical errors can be a bit frustrating to watch. I can't stand the diving in the modern game, but no doubt the skill level is higher than ever before. Pick your poison I guess. I do feel like the players were playing for their shirt much more though, loyalty is non existent in todays game.
The skill level is not improved at all. It's improved the skill required by lowest level player, even defenders, but overall , and especially among the best players, the level of football today is really really low. It's only the tactical level that has improved, and with that the cleanness of some well constructed actions (which people may mistake for a better technical level of the players involved). But again, the skill level of the best players is an all time low today, and the matches is a battle of tactics, not skills. Anyone who played football can clearly see that.
love Vinny.Remember him playing in goal for Wimbledon against my team NUFC.NUFC fans were pantomine booing him but cheering him when made saves as had respect for the total commitment he always gave.
Great lesson for young players here. He's up against better players but he's fitter and sharper. He's first to everything. Add his aggression and Liverpool are second best in midfield.
the only reason people say it doesn't mean anything any more is because United Chelsea and Spurs fans couldn't handle that Arsenal won it so much and pretended it didn't mean anything
One of my worst days as a Liverpool fan, Wimbledon fans had 4 tickets each, most of them were mugged and we got in the Wimbledon end, as soon as Beardsley had that goal disallowed I knew we would lose, you just get that feeling, the highlight of the day was when Frank Bruno drove through slowly past us and we were all banging on the limo tyson tyson tyson, poor old Frank looked terrified 😨

Don't know what game you were watching! McMahon didn't have a great game but no one did for LFC. It was a terrible game overall. Jones tried to smash McMahon and there's a myth perpetuated that McMahon bottled it after the first tackle. Anyone believing that never saw Steve McMahon play. He was hard as nails and could play. Jones had a few moments in his career but he was just a brute that tried to intimidate better players. Tried it with Eric Cantona too. And failed. Jones made the most of being very fit and limited ability. So credit for that. But he never intimidated the likes of McMahon, Robson, Fenwick, Pearce etc. If he'd ever tried to kick Bryan Robson, he'd have found out what hard really meant.
Vinnie signed for leeds just over a year after this game. He was superb for us & never got booked as leeds won the old div 2 to get promoted. Legend at leeds & scored a few goals in that promotion season, he can return to the city anytime & will always be a hero.
I distinctly remember one time Wimbledon had just won a throw in, Vinnie put the ball between his feet, facing away from the throw in taker, scooped it up with one foot up his other leg and then backheeled it while in the air, straight into the arms of Warren Barton so that he could take it.
