2023, this video is still so relevant. Picked up a 04 wagon and going to 6 speed swap it to add value because I got such a good deal on it. Thanks so much, 👍🏼
I've built these cars for a few years and I'm still learning new things. I have to say, all your videos are excellent. Very informative, they tell us just about everything we need to know without hours of pouring over message boards. Keep it up guys.
This is 100% correct. I swapped an 04 STi 6 speed into my Bugeye in 2015. The amount of research and leg work I had to do in order to complete my swap the way I did was staggering. I was going on a very budget approach so I wanted to use very specific parts. The only regret I do have is not doing a newer transmission with the stub adapters for the front axles. At the time though, that wasn't as popular of an option in my reading. Having said that, everything I learned along the way including the final drive ratio and how it's different based on the center diff's ratio (1:1 or 1.1:1 IIRC); combined with the different options in axles and why the hubs are the way they are, was covered in the first 10 minutes of this video.
@@FlatironsTuning so in order for me to run an 04-05 sti trans in my 05 wrx all I need is the transmission, sti clutch, sti drive shaft and the sti shift Linkage. And keep everything else?
Very glad that it was helpful! Take a look at the FAQ video too: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html&feature=shares Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

I'm running a v7 non-dccd sti trans in my car. Used the spool from the stock diff and had it mated with the ring and pinion gear from a 2011 wrx to make it 3.90 and retain the viscous lsd.
I'm going to try and get a 06-07 STI 6 speed at the end of the year for my 06 WRX and been doing my research so correct if I'm wrong. In order to do the swap I will need the 06-07 transmission, either a auto drive shaft (if I'm keeping my r160) or get the STI shaft and differential. Now the next part is if I'm keeping my r160 I can keep my axles and hubs but I'm hearing the diff is weak, but if I go the r180 route and get hybrid axles it might be better. Just want to make sure I got everything right there thank you.
All of that sounds correct. Definitely go back through this video, and our FAQ video, and those should be a good reference for you. ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Alright just wanted to confirm and one more question would it be safe to drive the car a little while without the DCCD? I just wanna hold off on that for now until I'm ready for it
@@zayzgda4707 Yes, it is safe to drive the car without power going to the center diff. Just keep in mind that you will have maximum rear bias. It is also not recommended to put the car on the dyno in that configuration. Hope that helps!
Hello Sir, thank you for the great video, i have a WRX 2004 and I'm planning to swap a 2007 Legacy 2.0GT Spec B 6 speed gearbox, will 6 speed shifter linkage from sti GD 02-07 chassis fit ? or i can reuse the old one from 6speed legacy gearbox? Thank you in advance!
Holy moly, that's tons of info. Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's what I got for my specific application (stock 03 WRX sedan): If I were to do a 6-speed swap I would really only need the transmission, STI shift linkage, drive shaft, and the conversion to make the male/female front axels work, but should probably upgrade to the STI clutch and flywheel as well? Thanks for any info!
Thanks for your question Peter, and glad the video helped. Yes, I'd say that you have it all right. If you need a clutch, then there are a lot of advantages to running an STI clutch because it is much easier to get a higher torque capacity. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Your guys' videos are so awesome. Super informative and well explained. Thank you guys for taking the time to make these videos to help us all out. Are all the steps the same for swapping in a JDM 6 speed into a USDM 2005 WRX? My only concern is that perhaps the speedo cable on my USDM WRX wouldnt match up to the JDM 6 speed plug and I cant seem to find any info on it out there
Thanks for your comment and thanks for your question. The JDM 6-speed will install the same as the USDM. The speed-o cable is the same, though some of the JDM transmissions have the opposite polarity on the neutral and reverse switches. In short, they are just slightly different in certain years. but still very straight forward to use. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
I know the video is old, but its so informative, thanks! Can you provide any insight on which sti transmissions would be good for a 2002 wrx? Is it any sti 6spd including the new ones?
Thanks for your question! If you want an STI transmission that will work with your rear differential, you would want a transmission from late 2006 on. If you haven't watched our FAQ video yet, I'd recommend checking that out as well, and I'll link you to the time relevant to transmission and rear differential ratios: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Idk if you're still taking time to answer questions. But first and foremost I used this video to buy and install a 6spd in my WRX. It was all good unill I made 502 awhp. I since went to rwd (shortly back to awd) but I just bought an r180 and the rear knuckles from an 05+ sti. I will be taking all the parking break things with it as well as the hubs. So my question is will the rear knuckles bolt up to the 05 wrx shock/strut? I have 2 pot breaks aleady .
Thanks for your question. yes, the rear STI knuckles will work with your struts. Only the fronts have a different bolt pattern. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
I know its a long shot that i get a response to this, But i happened to get a 2012 full 6speed swap, the whole shebang. I know that im gonna need a auto DS because the 2012 is about 4 inches longer than my 06 WRX TR, but would it be possible to run the hubs from the 2012 as well? I am aware that they are 5x114.3 and I have a set of wheels ready to go, but would the suspension bolt up to the new hubs? thanks in advance if you respond. -Ben
Thanks for your question. We actually have a 6-Speed Swap consult on our site now, and that is the best way to get your information together, and schedule a time to go over your build and questions. Here is a link to that: www.flatironstuning.com/6-speed-consultation And the best part is that the cost of the consult is put on your account as credit for any parts that you need, etc. Hope that helps and best of luck with your swap!
I have an 02 wrx and i just bought a 04 sti 6 speed without axle stubs. Just wondering if anyone knew the cheapest way for me to get it to work. The video had so much information I got confused. Great video though.
Thanks for your question. Definitely go back through the video, and check out our FAQ video as well: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html If you still have questions, we now offer 6-Speed swap consults, and you can start setting that up here: www.flatironstuning.com/6-speed-consultation Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Another awesome video! Thanks so much for keeping the GD chassis relevant. I do have some confusion about the REAR track width. Supposing full shabang swap, all STI hubs, brembos, and R180. All the WRX's have left/right rear axles but the STI has the same length left and right. The WRX rear axles are shorter on the driver's side due to the R160 being offset. How are the STI's axles the same? Is the R180 not offset? Do I need the STI rear subframe to center the R180? Thanks again!
Thanks for your question. Some of the GC cars had different length rear axles, but the GD does not. We just ran into this on our Rally car. You will see left and right listed, but they are the same part number. Long story short, if you are putting in an R180, you would need conversion axles to keep your WRX hubs. But if you are using a complete STI driveline including hubs and axles, you just move all of those components over, and you will be good to go. Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
@@FlatironsTuning Thanks so much for the reply. Got it all figured. The GD def has different length rear axles; at least on my wagon. I was assuming the driveshaft was centered but it is not! The r180 being a bit wider, centers the diff making the STI axles the same length left and right. Hope that help someone. Flatiron you rock!!
That's definitely news to me. I never came across that in my research back when I initially did the trans swap. I just took out the P/S axle and the rear diff tonight and noticed my R180 has some play in the pinion. I got worried when you asked about the rear subframe because I recently started thinking about swapping that as well and was wondering if in fact I had to and overlooked it.
I'm picking up a v7 non dccd , with r180 diff, axles, and sti differential that came from one car . And my question is would it be plug and play and recommend since its non dccd and planning to make around 500hp? it connects from female axle to trany. Do I just buy 04 sti knuckle and hub assembly front and rear to keep my 02 wrx suspension ? And what part do I need to buy since I don't have sti ebrake ; cable , whole assembly?
Thanks for your question. We are in Boulder, CO, but we don't work on customer cars unfortunately. But we can certainly refer you to a shop in the area if that would help. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
I’ve been reading and watching your videos a lot lately, and I came across some info that you may be able to fit the rear 2 pot wrx calipers to the r180 rear hubs if you just use the group “n” or gravel spec rotors, they have a 190mm handbrake and 290mm o/d, and if you get the early 04 sti with the 5x100 stud pattern, the calipers use the same bolt spacing as well, so I’m lead to believe... can you shed any light on this? Cheers 👌
Thanks for your question. Yes, if you have the STI R180 rear knuckles, the Subaru 2-pot calipers will bolt right up. There is a gravel spec rotor that the rally folks use that works with the STI parking brake shoes too. www.flatironstuning.com/kns-gravel-spec-rotor-04-sti I hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
FlatironsTuning Thankyou very much I’m so keen to get my 6 speed swapped in when it arrives, gravel spec rotors ordered and hope it all bolts up smoothly! Couldn’t have done it without your videos, Thankyou!!!
One correction: male WRX axles won't properly fit an early model 6 speed that used to have axle stubs. The sun gears and seals from a stubless 6 speed need to be swapped.
Thank you for that point. Yes, if your 6MT has stubs, then you need the male to female axles to work with the transmission. Since we focus on the 2007 STI transmission, this is not an issue, but if you are getting an early JDM transmission, you could run into this. Thanks for watching!
I have a 2006 Subaru Outback Impreza 2.5 n/a would i have to swap out my diff too or can i keep my r-160 diff? Also what year of STI transmission woould best fit this chassis?
Thanks for your question. No, your R160 wouldn't work because it is the wrong ratio. I'd actually recommend against putting in an STI transmission unless you have installed a turbo engine. The reason is that the gears are all going to be taller. 6th for instance is much taller than your current 5th, and you will not be able to make use of it very much because your engine just doesn't make enough torque. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. The short answer is that yes, you could put a 6-speed transmission into your car. But because it is not a turbo, there would be far less benefit for doing so. And you have the added complexity that comes because your car is an automatic. You are going to have to put in a new pedal-box (because you have no clutch), and that is pretty darn involved. My advice would be if you really want this drivetrain, sell your current car, and look for an STI, or at a minimum, a less expensive WRX to do teh swap into. I hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Thanks fo your reply, greatly appreciated. Would an ls swap be worth it or is it even possible in the NA platform? I'm itching to do something with it, it looks good, but very slow
@@Roryf4462 My best advice is to look at what some of the Open Light Rally guys are doing. They are figuring out ways to tune the NA 2.5 liter engine to make just under 200 whp and that is allowing them to compete with the turbo cars a bit. One of the teams we sponsor is working with Ecotech and they are having great results. They would be worth a call if you are set on doing something. Hope that helps!
I have a question, I have a 2004 Wrx wagon and I’m planning on a 6 speed swap, I got my hands on a 06 sti trans, I was wondering if I wanted to use my 5 speed flywheel and clutch (since I recently upgraded) which clutch fork would I use the 5speed or 6speed (I have both) and also I was going to pair it with my stock Wrx rear diff and an auto drive shaft. Will that setup work?
Thanks for your question. Yes, your WRX clutch will work in the STI transmission if you don't want to swap over to an STI unit. Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. The short answer is yes. Both would come with some pretty big hurdles. Converting from an Auto to manual is no simple task because you have to weld in a new pedal box and all that entails. Putting a 6 cylinder engine where there was only an 4 cylinder is also not an easy process. And if you are wanting to turbo it in addition, that will be a very involved process too. I guess a starting point would be how willing you are to run a stand-alone ECU. If you were planning on that all ready, you may have an easier time starting out with a MT car since the bulk of your work will be wiring, etc. If you are comfortable with fab work, and you are on the fence about turboing the engine, then maybe start with the 6-cylinder. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
It really isn't that bad. If you factor in the labor that it costs to rebuild a 5-speed, the 6-speed swap really is a pretty good value in many cases. The wiring can be a little involved, but it is not bad in our experience. Lots of WRX's have been getting STI 6-speeds lately 🙂 Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. I don't think that we will do that because there is a lot of complexity that comes with adding that third pedal in, and we have always started with a manual car. But once you do get the pedal box installed, there is just a few electronic issues that you have to work around, but the rest is basically the same as this or the GR swap. Good luck with the project and Stay Tuned!
So if I understood correctly... for an 06 WRX swap I would need: Transmission Clutch and fly wheel STI Rear diff STI Drive shaft S.DIFF controler And I can use the same axles off my wrx with this setup?
Thanks for your question. The short answer is that as long as you stay with an R160 rear diff, yes, you can use all of your axles. You may want to go through our FAQ video, or take a look at the 06-07 WRX kit on our site where all of the options are broken out. ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html www.flatironstuning.com/flatirons-6-speed-transmission-swap-package-06-07-wrx Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

Im here revisiting this vid finding any information on 6mt swap into wrx.. Specifically when using r180 rear diff.. but i would like to keep using wrx 5x100 hub and upright... Does the r180 sti inner axle stub is direct swap to wrx 5x100 axle?
Thanks for your question Amir. I'd recommend going back through the video, as we specifically address that here. The short answer is no, you can't use STI axles with WRX hubs on the GD chassis. I'd also recommend going through our FAQ video here: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
@@FlatironsTuning i guess so... Ok. So I have a completely bone stock 2003 wrx wagon with a 5MT. I'm going to build a new ej205 back to stock and then start building more power from there. Would it be possible to take a 6MT and use it with the ej205? If so. What year trans would I need along with the clutch and flywheel
Thanks for your question. You can absolutely do that. The STI 6MT will bolt up to any EJ20 block, so there really are no limitations from using a 2.0 liter block. All of this video and our FAQ video would still apply. Thanks for watching!
Hello, would it be difficult or possible to swap my 4eat 2005 wrx (sedan, 2.0L ej205 usda) into a 6mt STi? I'm guessing these videos will apply, with the exception of mine being a 4eat.
Thanks for your question. Yes, swapping out the pedal box is required for this, and is a lot of work. And depending on the ECU, there can be some things that need to be done there to get the car to run properly. I believe with an 05 4EAT, you can ground one of the pins to get the car to run properly with a manual transmission, but I'm not 100% sure. It can be done, but it isn't easy. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
I have a question / need help please I’m buying 02-03 v7 6speed w/ 3.9 FD non dccd. Which Subaru’s came with 5speed R160 3.9 diffs so I don’t chew up gears and keep my wrx axles & hubs. I am swapping into a 03 WRX sedan. Thank You

Thanks for your question. It looks like the GD WRX Autos had 4.11:1 rear diff's so you would not be able to use your R160. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
What year STi driveshaft will work? You mentioned STi or auto Impreza drive shaft. I have speed swap and ej257 engine it’s bolting up to. Into a 2003 WRX
Okay, I have a 02. All I want to do is swap my trans. So I need a drive shaft and trans. But the male to female axles is in the way. Can I get 04-05 wrx axles (male to male) and have them work with my 02 hubs and the sti trans? And if the trans FD is 3.90 is my 02 wrx 160 diff Good?
Thanks for your question. First, I will recommend that you take a look at our FAQ video about the swap as well. We address your question about the rear diff specifically there: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html As far as the axles go, yes, if you get the 04-05 front axles, they will just snap into the STI transmission. Hey, I’m in Australia and we have gc8 wrx, from what I can tell the suspension and driveline is the same as the gd wrx. I want to change the hubs to the 05 STI 5x114.3. I was just wondering if the 05 sti hubs would accept the stock gc8 wrx axles?
Thanks for your question. Unfortunately they will not. If you run STI hubs, you need STI axles. The WRX axles have different splines. Good luck with the swap and Stay Tuned!
so for a 2003 wrx the minimum i would need is a 2005 sti 6 speed gb, sti clutch and flywheel, wrx auto driveshaft and stubs for the front axles? how would I know the gearbox is a 05? and where do I get the stubs for the front axles?
Thanks for your questions. All of the transmissions have a code on the bell housing. you would just need to cross-reference that to make sure you are getting the year of transmission you want. Hello. The 6 speed’s final drive is a 3.90. My 04 wrx has a rear diff at 3.54. I have someone selling me a 2004 Sti 6 speed transmission. will it fit without replacing the diff? Can i keep my diff? i want to do as minimal work as possible.
Thanks for your question. We go int specific detail about exactly this in our FAQ video. Here is a link to that point in the video, but I'd recommend watching the whole thing. ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the question. You can use a Spec-B transmission, you just won't have the DCCD. Axle fitment for the transmission is the same as the STI transmission so the options discussed here still apply. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
So if I had an STi transmission with no axle stubs and I wanted to put it into my '02 GD WRX, I could use '04-'05 WRX axles that have the male/male connections? Or do the '04-'05 WRX axles not have the same spline counts as the '02-'03 hubs/axles? So I would have to get the kit you guys sell without a doubt? Also I've found a couple STi transmissions, some JDM from different years and models than 06-07 USDM STi's. But they're always no-stubs with a 3.9 front diff, and a 1.1:1 transfer gear ratio to accept the GD WRX's 3.54 rear diff - I would assume that the kits would accept most of these earlier 6-speeds?
Thanks for your question. The short answer is that if you need to run stub axles in a transmission that didn't come with them, you can just add them. We have a kit for that on our site actually: www.flatironstuning.com/stub-axle-kit-02-03-wrx-and-04-sti As to the differential question, I'd recommend you take a look at our FAQ video. We go into that in great detail there: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Sorry if this has already been addressed, but would all this info apply to an 05 WRX Wagon as well? Wasn’t sure if the narrower chassis would make axle fitment an issue. Thanks!
Thanks for your question. Yes, all of it would apply, and you are correct, you would want to keep the axle length in mind. However, if you are just using your WRX axles, then there wouldn't be an issue. If you wanted to run STI axles, then you would need to go to Sedan Track width. Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Does this video applies if I do a full drivetrain swap? A full Sti drivetrain should fit on my ej205 (keeping the same wiring)? Also, from what I understand, I could keep the coilovers from my wrx even if I'm running the sti drivetrain as long as it's a 5x100 bolt pattern.
so with all this info and the amount that is brewing in my head, it would be cheaper to just buy an STI and keep it simple.Sounds like too much of a pain to do a complete STI 6 speed swap, unless like you said you have a complete wrecked STI then you get everything and you do the work.
I'm currently driving a Hatchback Subaru SGT(Basically JDM WRX), on Auto(4EAT Gearbox). Do you know what are the list of items I need? Also, is it a MUST to change the axles as well?
Thanks for your question. Going from an Auto to a Manual transmission is a lot of work. The biggest part of that is you need to change out your pedal box for one that has a clutch :-) We don't have a specific list of parts because every time we have started to look at doing this, it has made more sense to start with a different car that started life as a manual. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Thanks, and thanks for watching! your biggest hurdle would be going from Auto to Manual. Swapping out a pedal box is no easy feat. Beyond that, it is very similar to the 08-14 wrx swap actually. And you have the added benefit that you can use the 07-09 Spec-B axles in the rear which makes putting in the R180 differential easier. Hope that helps, and good luck with your swap!
Thanks for your question. That would be very much like the legacy. Because you have an Outback, you would need a 1-piece driveshaft (we'd recommend Driveshaft Shop) because there is no stock driveshaft that would bolt up to your car and be the correct length. Otherwise the swap is identical to the Legacy. Thanks for watching!
Does your swap kit for the 02-03 wrx work with a 2005 sti transmission because on your website it only gives me the option to use the 2007 sti transmission
Thanks for your question. The parts would work, but you would have to use a different rear differential if you were going to start with a 2005 STI trans. But otherwise, yes, all of the other parts will work. I'd recommend looking at the FAQ video as well. We go into specific detail about rear differential compatibility there. ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. It sounds like you got a JDM transmission that has the reverse polarity for the neutral safety switch. If you swap that for the other one, basically what your car came with, that will solve this problem. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Hey, so I have a 2002 WRX here in the USA. It has a full JDM ej205 swap done, so it isn't the USDM ej. WIll this still work? Where do you recommend finding a decent 6 speed mt? Thank you so much!
Yep, all of the EJ series engines have the same bell-housing, so everything here still applies. We can get you a new 6-speed and that is what we recommend. You can find used 6-speeds too. The best practice there is to have an experienced tech go through them before installing because now that they are getting older (a 2004 STI trans is 14 years old now! Crazy!), they are more prone to have issues, and if you don't inspect the trans before installing it, you can find that you have to pull the 6-speed right back out again after you swap it in. We are starting to see some significant wear in the older center DCCD's too FWIW. If you factor in an inspection, and rebuilding parts, the new transmission that we have isn't that much more, and you have the added knowledge that the transmission is brand new. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
@@FlatironsTuning Awesome! I will look into it, and it is crazy my car is almost 20 years old! Would you recommend doing a swap like this for a daily driver? I've been driving the car now for a few weeks and I'm noticing that it is actually becoming painful while shifting. I will say a lot of that is probably my shift knob, which I am replacing soon. But do you think it would be worth the effort to make this swap or just get a cobb short throw shifter? Just want to say thank you so much for the detailed response, not many other people out there can say they do the same. Keep making the awesome videos!
Thanks for your question Jesse. This video gives you the information that you need about the drivetrain swap, and we have another video about putting a 2.5 liter engine in your WRX as well. Here's that video: ruclips.net/video/6Xzopgayw7c/видео.html Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
FlatironsTuning thank you the vid explained things pretty well but one thing is still confused about is what year STI transmission will fit in the 05 Wrx I got confused with the female and male connection points
So without a DCCD controller, the torque bias will always be toward the rear, regardless of which trans and rear diff? Do you have a rough estimate of % bias F/R?
Hello Bill. Yes, that is correct. It will be about 65% rear biased, but because of the diff's in the transmission, if you are in slick conditions (ice/snow), the car will basically be rear wheel drive, or at least that is how it will behave. I hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. For the Subaru 6-speed, I'd say Motul Gear 300 is a great bet, or Subaru's MT fluid which is a semi-synthetic blend. www.flatironstuning.com/motul-gear-oil-75w90 www.flatironstuning.com/subaru-high-performance-gear-oil-75w90 I hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
I was wondering if the method of using an integra axle and a new clutch and flywheel still works when taking the 6 speed out earlier sti models (04-06?)
Thanks for your question. We talk about axles specifically in our FAQ video here: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html I believe that should answer your question. I am guessing that Integra axles was some kind of type-o? Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
So if I have a 2004 wrx I would need the transmission with shift linkage and driveshaft , with optional swapping out the clutch ? Also saw on regarding the speed sensor I saw looking at pictures of the sti wrx transmission 08 and up they have a plug bolt hex will I just remove this plug and insert the sensor to get the speed ?
Thanks for your question. That is basically it. For the speed sensor, I'd recommend going through our FAQ video as we go into that topic specifically. You would just need a processor to get the wheel speed and turn it into vehicle speed. ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html www.flatironstuning.com/mapdccd-wheel-speed-sensor-signal-processor Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
I have a 2003 Baja, and the 5mt blew up at 231k so I put in a used 5mt and was wondering how difficult it would be to swap in a 6mt? (Also put in a locking rear diff because traction)
Thanks for your question Noah. It will not be much different than we describe in the video. You will just need to find a rear diff with ratio to match the 6MT, and your choice for driveshaft may be limited to the Spec-B one. But it should not be too complicated. Thanks for watching!
I have a 02 wrx wagon and would like to do a 6 speed swap. So what transmission from what year subaru would I need? And drive shaft? Extra parts? It's a 2.0
Thanks for your question. I'd suggest going through this video again, and our FAQ video as well. Here is a link to that: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. Everything discussed in this video will be the exact same for your 2006 WRX. You will just need a different rear differential because of the unique ratio of the 06-07 WRX. Definitely go through our FAQ video because we talk about rear differential ratios in detail there: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. Yes, the STI has an R180. If you are running the R180 in a GD chassis, then you need the GD STI Driveshaft. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. Basically for the GC the parts needed are the same as the GD WRX. So if you follow this video, and make sure that you hav a rear differential that will work with the 6-Speed you have, you should be fine. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
We don't have first hand experience with a 15+ swap, but we have answered questions for people. It sounds like it is basically very similar or the same as the swap into a 11-14 WRX. Thanks for watching, and Stay Tuned!
I have a 2003 bugeye and my wrecked 2005 Sti donor car do I need to swap rear control arms and lateral links it will the Sti hubs and everything bolt up to the wrx control arms
Thanks for your question. As long as they are both sedans, you don't need to swap control arms and lateral links. But if you have 2005 STI front control arms in good condition, they will give you more caster than the WRX arms. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
FlatironsTuning reason I’m asking the my rear Sti lateral links are twisted but the rest is okay do I need new ones or are the wagon arms compatible with Sti suspension
@@dustinpeters8609 Okay. If you have a wagon, then the Sedan/STI lower control arms will be about 10mm wider on each side. This can make wheel and tire fitment more tricky on the wagon, so you may want to keep your WRX wagon suspension. But if you want to run STI axles etc., then yes, you would need to swap them out.
I'm about to bite the bullet and do the jdm 2003 sti trans swap with the plated rear diff and suretrac front diff for a street car/track day setup for my 2006 wrx. will i regret not going with the hellical front diff in the 2006 sti setup? need a stronger setup and hoping its gonna be worth it and not noticeably bad on understeer ?
thanks for your question. The AP Suretrac is still in the category of a torque biasing differential. It has a slightly different behaviour in slick conditions than a gear type TBD, but if you have one wheel on ice, it will still behave as an open diff. Up front, there is nothing wrong with this at all up to about 400 whp or more. If you find that you start spinning a front wheel coming out of a corner, that is where you would want to look at a clutch type diff. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for the question, but I honestly think that the answer is no. Because the turbo Subaru's make a lot more power than the NA cars, the gearing in the STI trans is much taller. In other words, you would be adding a gear, but most likely you wouldn't be able to use it, and with the taller gears, you would likely have to use a lot more throttle to keep the car moving the rest of the time as well. Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. We actually cover that in our FAQ video here: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html You may also want to check out our "Everything you need to do a 6-speed swap" here: www.flatironstuning.com/sti-6-speed-swaps-everything-you-need-to-know Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
Thanks for your question. I don't believe that 04 STI axles would work with your WRX hubs, but you could certainly try them. The easiest thing to do would be to put in the stub axles so you could keep your WRX axles. Here is a link to those on our site: www.flatironstuning.com/stub-axle-kit-02-03-wrx-and-04-sti Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!
@@waltersjiu-jitsumoreheadci1080 No, the Axle splines on the R180 are different, so you would then need hybrid axles by Driveshaft Shop: www.flatironstuning.com/driveshaft-shop-rear-axles-500hp-02-07-wrx-gd-w-r180-diff-conversion
@@waltersjiu-jitsumoreheadci1080 The short answer is no. To run the STI bearing, you need the STI hub and knuckle. And that requires the STI axles. You would have to swap everything out to run the STI hubs.
So I’m still a bit new with my 02wrx It’s the 4EAT Since as of a month ago I damaged both my front and read diff I was told to either buy new diff front and back for the AT for 2k or spend 6-9k and do the whole sti swap since the sti had bigger hubs and almost everything was different So while I’m still trying to decide what I’m gonna do with the car Ik a person who is parting out their sti and is offering the 04 trans with diff, axels, drive shaft and shifter linkage Would I still have to change the 5x100 hubs and calipers and my rear diff? (The guy who sold me the car installed a big brake kit that requires 18 in wheels otherwise it wouldn’t fit n I barely have 1/2 in space from the caliper to the wheel dish)
I know a lot of Subaru parts are interchangeable, I was concerned about a crunching noise in the trans when going into 4th, mechanic said gearbox will blow in about a year. When the time comes I wanna do an sti trans swap, is this possible? And am I able to just bolt on the gearbox and nothing else e.g. clutch, flywheel, driveshaft etc? It’s a 1996 Impreza NA hatch manual sorry I know this video is not for my gf8 chassis
Thanks for the question Sam. The short answer is that yes, you can do an STI transmission swap in an Impreza, but you will need much more than the transmission itself. Your swap is very similar to the GD talked about here. I'd also recommend going through the FAQ video because it talkes about rear differentials. Your Impreza diff will not work with an STI transmission, so you would have to address that too. Here is a link to that: ruclips.net/video/uf4tcG5GqDU/видео.html Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for your question. I don't believe it would. One of the things that you have to swap on the 08-14 WRX to run the R180 is the forward rear differential mount. The R180 is a direct bolt in for the GD, but not the GR, so I would not think that the 08-14 R160 would be a direct bolt in for the GD. Then there is the issue that the GR R160 has an open diff. If you put that into a GD which doesn't have traction control, you will lose a lot of traction due to that open diff. If you need the ration, your best bet would be to take the ring and pinion gear out of the later R160, and put it into your early R160 to get you the ratio that you need. At least the GD's had a viscus differentian too :-) Hope that helps, and good luck with your swap!
FlatironsTuning tha k you so much for your reply. I guess I shoiuld be able to fit the GR R160 of I swap out the 2 studs on back of the case. As far as the open diff goes, I'll just suck it up until I get an r180 in the future since I don't want to mess around with switching out the r&p Thanks again!
Yes, the axles will. The reason we don't have a kit is because there are more parts required compared to the other kits. If you shoot us an e-mail or give us a call we can go through it with you. Basically, it is similar to the GR in that you do need a different rear differential. Thanks!
doing swap to my 02 wrx and want to keep suspension, i already have 04 sti Brembo set. does transmission need to be 04 as well and do the part numbers matter since I'm planning on going non-dccd so it can be plug and play
Thanks for your question. That is a very involved swap. You have a big task ahead because you don't have a clutch pedal, a pedal box to hold it, or any of the holes that you would need to run the clutch through the fire wall. It is possible, but it is a large amount of work. It may well be easier to find a MT car to do the swap than try to convert from the auto. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

I've built these cars for a few years and I'm still learning new things. I have to say, all your videos are excellent. Very informative, they tell us just about everything we need to know without hours of pouring over message boards. Keep it up guys.
Thanks Caleb. That is a great compliment. Glad that we could help, and thanks for watching!
Wow, that was a lot of information to absorb in a short amount of time. Loving these videos
Thanks Brian!
@@FlatironsTuning so in order for me to run an 04-05 sti trans in my 05 wrx all I need is the transmission, sti clutch, sti drive shaft and the sti shift Linkage. And keep everything else?

Great comment Jonathan. Thanks for watching!

Glad we could help. There is no difference in the EJ bell housing if that is what you mean.
Hope that helps, and Stay Tuned!
So for the 2003 wrx you need to change dif and axels?
I have an automatic Saab 92x, non turbo. Does any of this apply to me? If so, what would be the best option? Love these videos!!
Which do you think would be harder. Manual swapping a auto 2008 3.0r outback or 3.0r swapping a 2008 2.5 Xt outback the idea is for boosted usdm 3.0r
So I have a 2004 wrx and the “hardest” part of this swap seems to be the trans/clutch. Why haven’t I done this sooner
It really isn't that bad. If you factor in the labor that it costs to rebuild a 5-speed, the 6-speed swap really is a pretty good value in many cases.
The wiring can be a little involved, but it is not bad in our experience.
Lots of WRX's have been getting STI 6-speeds lately 🙂

Can you do a video on discussing swapping an automatic 2008 legacy gt to a 5 and/or 6spd transmission
So if I understood correctly... for an 06 WRX swap I would need:
Transmission
Clutch and fly wheel
STI Rear diff
STI Drive shaft
S.DIFF controler
And I can use the same axles off my wrx with this setup?
Thanks for your question. The short answer is that as long as you stay with an R160 rear diff, yes, you can use all of your axles.
You may want to go through our FAQ video, or take a look at the 06-07 WRX kit on our site where all of the options are broken out.

@@FlatironsTuning i guess so...
After looking in old forum posts, only way is by using custom bearing cage for inner stub made by subiedave in the state...

So ordering that with shipping and tax, probably not a viable option for me at the moment...
Probably will try finding legacy spec b axle locally first

Thanks for your question. You can absolutely do that. The STI 6MT will bolt up to any EJ20 block, so there really are no limitations from using a 2.0 liter block. All of this video and our FAQ video would still apply.

@@FlatironsTuning Oh good thanks for the reply
Edit: Forgot to mention I own a 2006 WRX wagon
Have you guys made a video like this for 6 speed swaps in SG Forester xt? STI and spec b as options. That would be killer
We have a kit for that on our site actually:
www.flatironstuning.com/stub-axle-kit-02-03-wrx-and-04-sti

Thanks Brycen. This is definitely not for every WRX, but depending on the situation, it can make sense.
Thanks for watching!
The biggest part of that is you need to change out your pedal box for one that has a clutch :-)
We don't have a specific list of parts because every time we have started to look at doing this, it has made more sense to start with a different car that started life as a manual.
I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
Love these videos so much! Any ideas on a 06 legacy gt wagon wanting to do a full sti trans swap ?
Thanks, and thanks for watching! your biggest hurdle would be going from Auto to Manual. Swapping out a pedal box is no easy feat.
Beyond that, it is very similar to the 08-14 wrx swap actually. And you have the added benefit that you can use the 07-09 Spec-B axles in the rear which makes putting in the R180 differential easier.
Hope that helps, and good luck with your swap!
What about the 06 outback 2.5xt manual what will be needed for the 6 speed?

After swapping full set up to 6 speed, cruise control wont work unless I put in neutral, which is pointless.
FlatironsTuning thank you the vid explained things pretty well but one thing is still confused about is what year STI transmission will fit in the 05 Wrx I got confused with the female and male connection points
So on the drive shaft fitment? 98-07 auto Impreza or sti. Does it matter what model Impreza?
Can you guys do an overview on putting a sti 6 speed in the 2022 wrx?
Well, we would need a 2022 WRX to do that. If you have one you could spare, we would definitely like to give it a try ;-)

FlatironsTuning reason I’m asking the my rear Sti lateral links are twisted but the rest is okay do I need new ones or are the wagon arms compatible with Sti suspension
@@dustinpeters8609 Okay. If you have a wagon, then the Sedan/STI lower control arms will be about 10mm wider on each side. thanks for your question.

If I were to do this on an automatic 2003wrx what else would I need to buy and do to the car
So what about swapping a 6 speed into a 2007 na impreza for better fuel economy? Would that work?
Thanks for the question, but I honestly think that the answer is no. Because the turbo Subaru's make a lot more power than the NA cars, the gearing in the STI trans is much taller. In other words, you would be adding a gear, but most likely you wouldn't be able to use it, and with the taller gears, you would likely have to use a lot more throttle to keep the car moving the rest of the time as well.

I was told to either buy new diff front and back for the AT for 2k or spend 6-9k and do the whole sti swap since the sti had bigger hubs and almost everything was different
So while I’m still trying to decide what I’m gonna do with the car Ik a person who is parting out their sti and is offering the 04 trans with diff, axels, drive shaft and shifter linkage
Would I still have to change the 5x100 hubs and calipers and my rear diff?

Thanks for the question Sam. The short answer is that yes, you can do an STI transmission swap in an Impreza, but you will need much more than the transmission itself. Your swap is very similar to the GD talked about here. I'd also recommend going through the FAQ video because it talkes about rear differentials. Your Impreza diff will not work with an STI transmission, so you would have to address that too.

will 08+ WRX R160 rear diff fit on 02-07? Trying to see if they'll be a good candidate for the 6spd swap on GD's
At least the GD's had a viscus differentian too :-)
Hope that helps, and good luck with your swap!
FlatironsTuning tha k you so much for your reply. I guess I shoiuld be able to fit the GR R160 of I swap out the 2 studs on back of the case. As far as the open diff goes, I'll just suck it up until I get an r180 in the future since I don't want to mess around with switching out the r&p
Thanks again!
can you keep stock 06/07 wrx axles? will they bolt right in like 04/05? couldnt find a swap kit for 06/07 on your website
Thanks for your question, no any year of STI transmission will work.
Good luck with the swap and Stay Tuned!
Will an automatic Wrx driveshaft work?
Yes, it will work.
Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!
I have an 06 forester xt. What 6 speed transmission would be ideal for this chassis?
I have a 2002 wrx 4eat, what would be the process of getting myself into a 6 speed?
Thanks for your question. That is a very involved swap. You have a big task ahead because you don't have a clutch pedal, a pedal box to hold it, or any of the holes that you would need to run the clutch through the fire wall. It is possible, but it is a large amount of work. It may well be easier to find a MT car to do the swap than try to convert from the auto.
Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!
after switching tranmissions and going 3.9 from a 3.7 , will it be a problem not being to rev as high? 6500rpm limit on 06
