  • In a heated "debate" on GB News, historian & broadcaster Rafe Heydel-Mankoo clashed with television personality Narinder Kaur on whether there were benefits to British colonization. Whilst many terrible wrongs were of course committed, Rafe's position is that, taken in the balance, the British Empire's legacy is far more positive than negative -- not least for women.
The debate was sparked after recent comments by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who said that Australia was "lucky" to have been colonized by Britain.

Why did the former Australian Prime Minister John Howard not break it down properly and say, "The ancestors of the Aboriginal Australians were lucky to have been invaded, murdered, raped, abused and enslaved by my British Ancestors as part of the process to modernity". One can not cherry pick the good while neglecting the vile things that British colonisers did in the process of colonising Australia.

I am a 73 year old Zimbabwean (formerly a Rhodesian), and so I have experienced colonialism first hand. The British pioneers marched into Zimbabwe in 1890. It was a disease-ridden, war torn, trackless waste with wholesale murder of the Mashona tribes by the Matabele. In 90 years those of British descent turned it into a virtually first world country. We had good roads, railways, schools, communications, power grids (hydro-power from Kariba Dam - the biggest dam in the world, when it was completed), government buildings, hospitals, clinics, honest judicial system, and a police force in the top three in the world. Interestingly there were almost no emigrants.
We then faced mandatory sanctions initiated by England a the US, and a civil war initiated and financed by Russia and China. This led to a Marxist government under Gabriel Mugabe, which turned the country from the Breadbasket of Africa to a Basket case in 40 years. Now, under the Marxist Freedom Fighter government, probably a third of the population has fled the country.
    Form your own conclusions.

The whole colonization issue or debate should be segmented into time periods and each time period analysed separately. To just jump to the conclusion that colonization was a benefit to the Colonized people is disrespectful to the victim. When Britain initially invested or ploughed back financial resources into the Colonies, was it for the benefit of the indigenous population or it was an endeavor by the UK to give its agents a good standard of living comparable to the UK while serving UK interests in plundering the new found lands. At some point, the UK presided over the largest human trafficking and exploitation, murders, rapes and all kinds of vile acts across all its colonies and more than any other European nation ever did. During that phase of colonization, can we say that colonization was of great benefit to the Colonies and the victims.
A different model or implementation would have been better than this one which was fueled by greed and the desire to domineer over other people. A more collaboratory approach would have yielded better results than the Colonization project.

Economic history graduate here. Notwithstanding that woman's unhinged screeching, the British Empire really was a force for good. It's "free trade" model lifted more people out of poverty in the Empire than countries not colonised by Britain. In Africa despite the myths, there was a nett flow into African counties developing the infrastructure, which is why London, broke after WWII, could not make them independent fast enough in the 1960s. In a recent IMF paper discussing Haiti and the reasons for its collapse, research into poverty was cited where BRITISH COLONISATION was the only outlier (not contributing to a country's problems). French colonisation and adopting socialism on the other hand .... Be PROUD of your British heritage, it was a force for good.

Many people don't appreciate that if it wasn't for the British a number of tribes in South Africa wouldn't exist today. When she speaks about 'genocide' that is what the Zulu were practicing in Natal as they moved south, wholesale slaughter of tribes effectively wiping the identity off the face of Africa. The British, in their clashes with Shaka's Zulu warriors, effectively stopped that. A women of the Fingo tribe living in the Eastern Cape once said that if they had not stopped them, her tribe, and hence her, would no longer exist.
The same happened in New Zealand where maori tribes were constantly fighting each other with cannibalism and slavery a common theme, by signing an Agreement with the British Crown, Treaty of Waitangi, this was stopped and the genocide that was the eradication of the moriori tribe by maori was not repeated.
Two small but significant examples of the benefits of English colonialism. It should be noted the the greatest genocides have always been perpetrated by rules on their own people, generally in the name of communism, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao and the Ukranian Holodomour to name a few.
Edit:- It is also worth noting that the esteemed economist, Dr Thomas Sowell, said that it cost England more to keep the colonies than what England derived in economic benefits, the huge investments in infrastructure and technlogy transfers were incredible, not to mention that it was the British that stopped the slave trade, an action that nearly bankrupted the country due to the compensation payments that were made along with the military actions with the navy preventing the shipment of slaves.

because you can scream "its a fact" until you're blue in the face- no amount of screaming like a neurotic basket case will convince anyone. That's why, on average, the more you KNOW a subject- the more calm and composed you are. because nothing someone else says is going to surprise you- and nothing they say is going to be a struggle to retort.
So when a neurotic woman like this has a massive audience- and she screams like a banshee, that isn't expressing passion or conviction, it's expressing: this person is incapable of respect, dignity, composure and the views and beliefs she has become associated with that lack of dignity, respect and composure...so what impression does that leave?
That leaves the impression that people who hold these beliefs are neurotic woman who are incapable of calmly expressing their views and opinions without devolving into disrespectful childish yelling matches.

Even with the atrocities in the concentration camps we accept their legacy. Never forgot it. But got on with our lives. Using what they have left on. Never destroying their flags and statues. And who's to say that India, for example, wouldn't have peacefully asked for railways anyway? Hard to know for sure.

I'm up on my husband's RUclips account watching this. This is like watching that Monty Python sketch where they're going "Well what did the Romans ever do for us, eh?!" Dude wins, hands down. India's net worth is on a par with Britain's today and it looks like they're going to surpass it soon. Modern day India is now a superpower in global terms. As a female watching this, I'm sitting here with my jaw hitting the floor. I'm watching a woman claiming to be Indian with blonde dyed hair, orange talons, dressed like she's in a designer made outfit and speaking with a thick English accent spouting on about how she's a victim and her people are victims. She literally nullifies her own argument just sitting there.

The newly independent nations who retained the British cultural capital model and also entered the Commonwealth and retained the Union flag as the Canton for their nation's flag on the whole have done quite well. Those which rejected it in favor of other things typically have celebrated their independence with a crumbling infrastructure, political instability, chronic food shortages, a revival of old tribal animosities, and often a great deal of wholesale slaughter. Silly buggers.
