Single Op FPV is great for chase scenes when not over used. All these negative comments are missing that FPV can also be used with a dual op setup. Mind you the author of the video doesnt dive into that aspect in this video so I do not blame those who didnt realize the practical applications being used today that blend really well with the rest of the film footage. One pilot one the sticks and the one on the cam. Useful for replacing arm cars, and for getting those precise, high-speed maneuvers that you cant as easily out of an Inspire or AltaX.

The worst thing to happen to cinema.
They remove all immersion and feel tacky and don't convey any message related to the story and mood of the scene.
No wonder hacks like Bay uses them.

Bay may think more traditional drone shots are "boring" but his film was nauseating (and not in a good way like the storm scene in Triangle of Sadness). If he had used only a few of the FPV shots, it might have made his film better. FPV makes sense only where its style and movement add to the story. Don't use it just because it exists.

You can instantly tell once it switches to a fpv drone shot and it takes the immersion right out of the movie, camera movements and composition work best when you don’t even notice them and they blend in with the story, that’s instantly lost when the camera is zipping at 30 mph and doing barrel rolls

They can be manipulated to mimic countless different handheld, gimbal, crane, traditional drone, etc shots. And yes fpv can be very easily identifiable when flown a certain way but it can be incredibly subtle and nearly impossible to discern as well. Watch just about any Disney kids movie from 2010 onward and a large portion of the shots are most easily captured with an fpv drone. Reality is the assumption and lack of understanding coming from the filmmaking world and the fpv world. Filmmakers have an incredibly shallow understanding of the fpv world and what’s possible and fpv guys have an incredibly shallow understanding of the filmmaking world and what’s possible. There are obvious shots and perspectives that are heavily used in cinema that are dead give aways and general public is developing an eye for “fpv shots.” This video barely explores the tip of the ice berg with regards to what’s possible. Like I mentioned the problem is ignorance between 2 very different worlds that where completely separate until they clashed in 2020. Sure go pros on fpv drones where used prior for some large production stuff but 2019/2020 was really start of exploring and designing different fpv drones w capability of carrying cinema cameras.

I don’t like fpv shots. I feel like it’s a “just because it’s new and you can, doesn’t mean you should” situation. But as always this was a great video and an interesting topic!!

michael bay's concept in terms of cinematography was basically ''oh this looks kinda cool'', he had little to no artistic vision which kinda ruined the way people see fpv drone shots. I still believe you can use them in a way that doesn't take you out of the movie

I have yet to see drones be used effectively without cheapening the experience, when used for “intense” fast paced action. Obviously the can reduce production cost instead of using helicopters when used for more traditional shots. They are great for documentary b-roll.

I fly FPV since the beginning of FPV. That said I don't like it in movies. It's nice for commercials, travel videos, music videos and casual videos but NOT gor movies or film. Drones where the camera is controlled seperatlly are miles better and more immersive for a movie.

  • @Millie-um2bi

Yeah these shots have a way to go yet. They've still got that cheap youtuber feel to them. Maybe as the technology and artistic language progresses we'll see some better stuff, but the example shots you showed were so immersion breaking and unpleasant

Hated drones being used instead of cranes, they looked cheap and felt like a regular youtube video with how you could see it constantly stabilising itself. then I watched Ambulance with the new fpv and was shocked. never saw camera movements like that before and no it didn't take me out of the experience; getting right in close to action and swooping through environments.
    yes they work.

Rumor has it a few Hollywood FPV operator/mechanics, having solved small cal recoil issues, near full SOLFAM integration,
high altitude deployment with altimeter/gyro auto-start, AI "release and drop" algos packages complete, are ready to go live ~ waiting for gov ink.
This tech isn't just for Hollywood anymore boyos. Besides, I'll bet the money is better.

  • @KABOBkabob

Fpv is absolutely wretched. There may be value in it when they figure out how to gimbal it properly so the camera isn't banking and flipping but for now it's just nauseating and frankly ugly, especially with the ultra wide angle lenses.
I haven't seen a feature with it-only action sports videos and hate it there. But those ambulance shots are truly horrific

  • @yetanotherbassdude
    @yetanotherbassdude Год назад +3

Dunno why so much hate for the FPV shots in these comments? Yeah, Michael Bay overuses them literally ad nauseum, just like he was overusing orbiting camera dollies and steadicams for his "this shit got real" shots back in the 90s, but so what? Plenty of other filmmakers have found more subtle ways to use previous camera technologies to help tell their stories with them, so I'm sure we'll see the same with FPV drones once the tech demo hype of them dies down.

I despise the FPV shots in movies. Wanna vomit when I see those garbage shots with horizon going all whack, literally looks like a home video.
First noticed it in The Gray Man and legit wanted to turn off the movie because of those atrocious looking sequences.
One of the worst things that have happened to films, technique-wise, ever.

Not gonna lie, I really dislike FPV in film, looks so generic and meh... some of the examples anyway are awful in this video and that's at production level quality, kids like Johnny fpv are far more talented than what I saw here. Doc B roll / RUclips content and stuff like that great, but when I watch a film, seeing janky DJI goggle FPV just makes it seem soo cheap and tacky.
