    Since you guys are into making all these crazy engines, I think you guys should give a 5 stroke engine a go. Normally they are a 3 cylinder configuration with the 2 outer cylinders being smaller, totally normal 4 stroke cylinders with the center cylinder being a single, larger, expansion cylinder that basically takes the exhaust strokes from each of the smaller cylinders and continues to expand on whatever's left.
    This could technically be achieved with a bog standard 4 cylinder engine and minimal (well... compared to what you guys normally do) modifications. You could use cylinders 1 and 4 as power cylinders, and then use cylinders 2 and 3 as a combined expansion cylinder. The first and last cylinders on the engine... leave them 100% stock... no modifications necessary. Cylinders 2 and cylinders 3 would need their cam lobs to be modified so that they both open their exhaust vales whenever cylinder 1 or cylinder 2 open an exhaust valve. Then the entire exhaust side of the head should be connected... basically a normal cast log manifold, but rather than using it as an exhaust, you just plug it... we want the exhaust from cylinder 1 or cylinder 4 to enter both cylinders 2 and 3 at the same time. Then the intake cam lobes on cylinders 2 and 3 need modified to open on both cylinders during the intake stroke of cylinder 1 and cylinder 4. So the lobes on cylinders 2 and 3 would be double sided on both the exhaust ports and the intake ports. Finally, chop the intake runners out of the intake for cylinders 2 and 3 and replace them with exhausts.
    Boom... 5 stroke engine.
    Would it run? Most likely yes... Would it be any better than just running on 2 cylinders? Well you guys already made a 2 cylinder Lada engine, so.... give it a shot and see! Who knows how well it would do! Could be great, or it could be hot garbage! XD

      @@huey-fan8335 not true man. I honestly thought the same thing, but I did it with a Kohler 16 hp single cylinder air cooled engine. After many times showing friends it finally did blow a head gasket, but still runs. The trick is to start spinning the engine over before you open the torch head valves.

You suck in extra air, thus lean out the mixture and not running a pure oxy-acetylene mixture! If you do it in a 4 cylinder car, with a quite voluminous intake manifold and just running pure oxy-acetylene without extra air, the intake manifold will explode with quite a bang

    Very interesting! In High School, we built a 2.5 liter Oldsmobile engine that ran ONLY on Compressed Gasses, with zero air from atmosphere, using Nitrous Jets to get the proper ratios. It worked great for 10 seconds. We revved it. Then we picked up the piston rings and cleaned our shorts.
    It'll idle fine. It'll be very happy coming off-idle. Maybe a bit too much nitrous in the mix, and it'll turn at 14 grand for about a second before the poo comes out of you and the motor, at about the same time.
    "I wanted to see what would happen if I just pinned it wide open".
    "It was running on co2, oxygen, propane, compressed air, helium, nitrous, and one of Dan's sausage and peppers farts. What did you think was going to happen?!"

      Why in the hell would you be injecting a completely non-flammable fuel such as CO2 into an engine? There's absolutely no oxidized or fuel source contained in CO2.... 🤔 🤷🏻
      By the way.... Oldsmobile never made a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder.
      Pontiac was the one responsible for the 2.5 liter "Iron Duke" 151c.i. inline 4-cylinder that was used in MANY of the fwd G.M. platforms from all divisions from the late 70s through the early 90s.

    I think the separate particles you were observing happened to be the plexi-glass gassing and burning. Some plexi-glass residue can slow down the flame front and obscure the true flame color of the different types of fuel. Thanks for the video! It was interesting!

    I have a special spark plug kit I purchased for my KMZ Dnepr MT-11 Sidecar Motorcycle. Instead of ceramic insulator it has heat resistant glass. It allows viewing the color of combination inside the head and cylinder while it's running. It's used for adjusting the carburetor. It makes it easy to adjust the idle circuit because at idle the flame should be blue. Above idle the color should be orange. There is a color chart to help set the high speed circuit. Here in the USA the kit is called Colortune. I ordered mine from Kiev Ukraine along with other parts for my KMZ Dnepr motorcycle. It's not as impressive as your clear head but does allow watching what is happening inside and it will not be damaged from running like plastic. I just wonder if a bore scope camera could be used with the glass spark plug to make a video of internal combustion. There are lots of videos of the use of the Colortune kit on RUclips.

    There used to be a „transparent spark plug“ called „colour tune“. You could use it to tune/synchronise multi-carburettor motorcycle engines. They had a specific glass between the core and the thread so you could see the colour of the flame.

    With some of the other fuels, adjusting the timing helps with cleaner burning as they need to be ignited at different points of compression, but I'd say propane's the nicer burning, as it's already gaseous so doesn't have the problem of there being droplets of fuel (the bright "flares" of stuff burning in the slowmo) trying to keep up with the rest of the burning fuels... :)

    One thing about acetylene - I'd expect it to ignite from compression quite early in the compression stroke. (Just a guess, based on the handling precautions for acetylene.) This would keep the engine from running properly, and likely cause some damage.

    My Grandad told me he got a Model A or T ford back to town on acetylene when they ran out of gas but it took both of them (He and his friend) to make it run well enough to drive it. Great work as always. Thank you for another great video.

    you will need pure oxygen it get those fuels to burn better ,propane needs a fuel preheat so it vaporise better !

      @@gabrielv.4358 thanks if you ever used a propane torch you would feel the tank would get cold .it would freeze going in till it got warm ,and acetiline needs oxygen to burn properly .and methanol slows down combustion!

      @@johnfudacz8495 propane's liquid state is 44 degrees below .0 F Vehicles run just fine on propane with no preheating. Now once you get to about 15-20 below you'll start having trouble. But even that's better than diesel which will gel at that temperature.
      Drove a propane delivery truck for years. It ran off the propane from the large tank.
      The reason your tank gets really cold it's because it's being discharged at a high pressure. And the pressure keeps it in a liquid state.

    I think a simple 2stroke motor might have a better chance of igniting alternate fuels correctly.
    Especially with intake injection no2 to rectify the combustion.

    I can do the same thing you're doing with a lawnmower engine you need to get yourself a set of valves inside the head you made that'll make it a hell of a lot more exciting and more experienced in your alarm or you'll see if it really Scheels properly or not

      Whilst your name is ironic, you need to realise that there are different kinds of Otto cycle engines, David.
      This is a "flathead" with the valve in the block. That makes the cylinder head nice and simple with the experiment.
      To make an Overhead Valve engine, it would be an absolutely MASSIVE amount of engineering to create the combustion chambers, valve seats, rocker arms, etc. The plexiglass head would be totally unsuitable as the material to support those things, and hence the experiment would never happen.
      Using a flathead makes absolutely no difference to the results.

    it's hard to say because there was no mixture control. But i now gasious fuels burn very clean and complete when the air/fuel ratio is controlled precisely, same for ethanol and methanol. The heavier the fuel (longer carbo hydro chains in molecules) the less complete they burn.
    By the way, this says nothing about the density of energy of each fuel. Diesel for instance has a high energy density.

      The compression is so high and internal pressures so high I'm not sure what kind of clear material you could use without blowing the head gasket. I'm not sure you could torque glass or plexiglass enough.

    Its was tiny cracks from drilling the holes. Polish the drill holes and fire and pressure will not have a route to follow after it warms up. But it will eventually melt that plastic I bet.

    Here's an idea! Take a 4 Cylinder engine for example, Separate the intake manifold so there is 1 carburetor per every 2 cylinders, and make 1 half of the engine run on gas and the other half on diesel.
    Seems like it could be interesting to see it happen!

      This makes me think of what the Cat D2 did. They had a tiny gasoline engine called a "Pony motor" You would start the gasoline pony motor, than it would start the diesel. They needed it because that diesel was very slow to start.

      I can tell you what would happen - the crank would snap between 2-3. Pony engines are started, warmed, and then clutched into the starter ring of the bigger motor to spin it fast.

    You should have adjusted the ignition timing....the ignition timing will be different for each fuel....that why it didn't run on other fuels....flame front on each fuel is different 🤔

    I have heard that in Indycar, they have alcohol fuel. They need dye so that when a fire starts, it is easy to see. Alcohol fires aren't so easy to see.
    3:16 I guess I'd cut a groove and fit a metal O-ring. That might keep the heat away for those bolt holes. Just a guess.
    Thanks and good luck. I think it would be funny if you made tires out of teflon. I think I found a way to do it. Maybe you could find a company that rebuilds huge industrial tires. You could then give them teflon where they would usually put the rubber. The tread would be teflon, and that's what would make the experiment funny.

      Pure Methanol is very common for short track racing also. Like you said a lot of teams will put dye in it to have the flame more visible.
      We've personally done a test with it at home, with and without dye. During the day without dye, we poured a little amount on dry pavement and lit it on fire. In the daytime you couldn't see a flame. You could see the wet spot on the ground disappear as the fire burned the methanol. You can see a flame with a thermal imaging device, but not an actual flame. With the Dye added it helps see the flame a lot easier. It's similar at night time, but at night time without the dye you can kind of see a flame, it's usually a very nice blue. You still have to look for the flame though.
      Personally I've known people that was on fire while using methanol and if you looked at them, you could not tell they was on fire. They even said they didn't know they was on fire, until they could feel the heat from the fire and seen their race suit started to turn brown from the fire burning it.
      Methanol fuel does burn cooler than pump gas and can help a lot with keeping engine temps down. Like the video says.
      Methanol also does not emit an opaque cloud of smoke.

    have you look at a hit and mis engine at the valves and came shaft mechanism? well some of those engines have the intake valve working free (is not moved by the came shaft) and juts the exhaust velve is connected to the came shaft, it is possible to make the same mechanism to a normal car engine (gasoline or/and diesel)?

    A friend of mine will take a balloon put oxygen and acetylene in it, tie it off, then put it in a paper bag. Light the bag and run away. Sounds like a cannon going off.

    You should have tried oxygen and the fuels you used, looks like you weren't getting a perfect mixture, especially with the acetylene

    Lada running on acetylene and oxygen - how fast will it go?

      It wouldn't go. Gasoline explodes the pistons down at a minimum of 260C, acetylene burns at 315C, oxyacetylene burns at 3150C and at that heat the cylinder would seize with the rapid expansion and then the gas would melt through the weakest point of the engine. Oxyhydrogen burns at 2500C but it explodes with 8 times the force of gasoline, so that would cause the cylinder to rupture.

    Try to do it with a diesel engine, nobody did it because it is supposed to be impossible

      I don't know if it would be impossible... it would be VERY difficult though due to the much higher compression and cylinder pressures... but if you make the acrylic thick enough... it should be doable. Well... plus the fact that you have to find a flathead diesel (I am sure there is something out there like that though)

      The compression ratio of Diesel is too high that it will crack any see through glass.

      @@afolabisamuel708 Diesel ignition is possible with a ratio as low as 15:1, whereas the old lada engine in the video is probably more like 7 or 8:1 from the factory.
      Yes it would be more than double at ~220psi, but that number seems achievable with acrylic. Worth testing!

      diesel with LPG and Diesel with acetone and paint tinner as additive. both have been tried and results were surprising. especially diesel with LPG.

    Obviously head made out of glass would withstand heat better... But feeding nitrous oxide to the engine would be interesting to see... The carburetor should also be replaced with one designed for gases, as now it feeds too much oxygen to the engine.

    A see through transmission would be interesting. Also a see through torque converter.
