Why doesn't the Bb piccolo clarinet exist anymore? It would make writing for piccolo clarinet so much easier. With the Ab piccolo clarinet, this is basically what you are doing in terms of notation: Use concert pitch as a reference and notate a whole step above concert pitch(Bb clarinet) Transpose that pitch down an octave so that you get the same pitch on the smaller piccolo clarinet(Same thing you would do if you were to take flute music and write it for piccolo while keeping the same pitch on the smaller instrument that was notated for the larger instrument) Then use the Bb clarinet notation as a reference and write a whole step above it, in other words a major third up from the same pitch on the flute(concert pitch). If the Bb piccolo clarinet existed to this day, this third step would be eliminated and you would just use the Bb clarinet transposition and then the octave transposition.
