I have both cars, and conclusion is that Fiat 500 is much better car than Smart. Smart is better for parking and fuel economy. But everything else is on Fiat 500 side. More room space, 4 seats, better leg rest and more space for driver, better looking, much more comfort on any road, lower high speed noise, better high speed economy (mpg on higher speed) and so on.
@@alexander2685 I bet you never driven a fiat 500. I have a 1.2 lounge, it drives like a dream. Fiat 500 is a premium car. Smart is just sheet metal work. Here in the Netherlands you can see fiat 500 everywhere whereas you rarely see a smart. Smart is not even a car, we call it brommobiel.
The engineering and technology of the Smart is more developed. In spite of the fact that the Fiat is also very cute, for city traffic the Smart is much more convenient. And the design is great.
Advantages of the smart car (though some may apply to the Fiat as well): It stands out on the road compared to the Fiat 500. Plastic panels can be hit or kicked hard and will not ding. I’ve had someone open their door and hit my smart pretty hard, but it didn’t leave a mark. Afterwards a friend asked me about it, so I kicked my door as hard as I could. Again, no marks or dings. Pretty cool! Has a split tailgate, not the cheap and less useful hatchback. Groceries and other items won’t fall out like they do with a hatchback. I know because our van is a hatchback. And nothing falls out on an incline with the smart. And stuff can be stacked up pretty high. Can maneuver through small spaces better than the Fiat. (The smart is quite a bit smaller that the Fiat) Takes up less room in a garage. Much more room for other things, like my library, Soloflex, Treadmill, Total Gym, cabinets all around, etc. etc. Has a ledge that sticks out from the dashboard: great for pens, pencils, cellphones, etc. And it looks awesome! Not sure which is more fun to say, “I have a Mercedez!” or “I have a Fiat!”. Can sit on the tailgate. Can stand on the tailgate. Can climb over something from the tailgate. I don't think the Fiat has a tailgate. Hatch does not go up very far with the smart fortwo so much less likely to hit something. Has a tridion safety cell so may be safer in a rollover crash or if something falls onto the smart. Can change body panels. It’s a two seater. Much better for one-on-one relationships. Never have tag-alongs! That's one of my very favorite features! With seat down and tailgate down, can lay down in the smart. Great for looking out the moon roof or for a drive-in theater, or just relaxing. In an accident the engine is in the back. It won’t be pushed into you from the front and is designed to go under you if hit from the back. I like that! Lots of smart clubs around. By the way, I have a 2009 smart. My 2009 smart fortwo now has 102,884 miles on it and still has not had any problems! Oh, I'm 6'5" tall, 250 lbs with a 36" inseam, and I've got plenty of room! And I get 35 mpg minimum and 45 mpg max.
I now have owned both, I wanted a Brabus, but couldn't get one, got a nice one eventually. The Smart is really only intended for city driving, you really have to looking out for yourself on an open road. I did end up with a 500 Abarth, quiker, but they feel heavy compared to the Smart, not as nimble. The best all round fun car I have ever owned was a Fiat Uno Turbo.
Just got to review these both. The Smart is great if you live in a big city with nice roads, but otherwise the Fiat just feels/rides so much more substantial.
good vid. I've actually driven both. It's just a choice of which one you want. Highway driving on either one doesn't bother me at all. The Smart will auto-correct for crosswinds so it's actually fantastic for that - you can hold your line steady very easily. It has that great turning radius and also it's RWD. The Fiat looks pretty good (both look good, up to you). The Fiat is still small which I like that and it has 4 seats, yes. Also often I'd lower the rear seats flat and then it becomes like a 2-seater with more cargo room.
I sat in smart for two car with my husband , we were literally touching shoulders , I couldn’t breathe in it . I want to test drive a fiat 500 with him and see if we would actually have room to breathe in that one .
The Smart car seems like it handles more like a golf-cart. Which I guess would be useful in a slow moving, crowded city. However, out on the open highway, the Fiat is probably a better choice for ride quality and safety.
My husband and I are looking for a small car to pull behind our RV and plan to use it to visit local sights. It won't be an everyday car, and there won't be any long distance travel in it. Which of these two would you recommend?
All i know is smart is fun to drive and has more overhead room for a two seater also maintance on this car can be done easy i changed my oil also fiat 500 is sluggish on the road and has issues with the engine that's why i bought a smart and 😍it.
rich b my two cents on that is that if you’re getting the fiat, get the abarth. Otherwise the Smart is the way to go. The new one. I love my 2011 but I would love a little extra pull and sacrifice a bit of fuel. That’s the thinking of why I want to consider the 500 abarth. The Smart always gets me the last laugh in Downtown Houston. Parking ninja. Might be the reason why I drink too much. Don’t worry, I got my driver that rather smoke their cigs.
Decent review, except that you failed to address comfort for taller drivers. At 6' 2", the Fiat's awkward driving position, limited front legroom and oversized center console make it feel like a penalty box. I find the Smart much more comfortable in terms of legroom, driving position, etc.
I'm 6'3'' and never had any comfort problem in my fiat 500, plenty of leg and head room, at least on the version with the sunroof. But when i'm sitting in the driving position there's no leg nor head room in the rear sits Edit: typing errors correction
Thanks for the review! I don't see a lot of reviews like these since these cars are often niche in the American market. I'm really still uncertain on what I should get though, I've heard that the FIAT has horrible reliability ratings while I've barely heard anything at all for the Smart's reliability.
Alright, thank you for the reply! Not a lot of car reviewers I watch replies to comments so much. I'm really considering the FIAT now (due to its 4 seats and cheaper price), although I do find the Smart really attractive too in terms of how it's almost like a "toy car" regarding its size and maneuverability.
Sorry for the late reply on this one (been a busy weekend lol) but if you need the 4 seats the Fiat is for sure the better option. If you go for a test drive in the smart. ask to see where the windshield washer fluid goes. I was really surprised to see what seemed to be poor quality and design from mercedes, But it was much more of a blast to drive. If you want a bit better of a Fiat 500 then you could also go with the 500 turbo. more expensive but much faster and peppy then the normal 500 and you still get 4 seats ( i did a video of that car by itself too)
That's okay, thank you for the reply! I've actually went to a car show yesterday and checked out the Fiat 500 and the Smart. And to be honest, I've started to drift towards the Smart now. I sat inside and I actually liked how essentialist it felt. And in reflection, situations where I need to carry 2+ passengers are quite rare, and I never buy a huge amount of groceries either. I think I'll have to do a test drive of both cars before coming across a conclusion of what I'd pick, although I feel that I drift towards "fun" than pure practicality. And according to this review, it seems that the Smart would be a more fun vehicle to drive! Also, on the "windshield washer fluid" part of the comment, are you talking about the hood of the car where it detaches completely? If so, I agree that it seemed rather off-quality! I was actually sitting on the driver's seat of the Fortwo at the show, and I remember seeing the shocked look of one person's face when he accidentally detached the hood completely. He struggled to put it back on before giving up, and the hood of the Fortwo was left disconnected and crooked for the rest of the day. Again, thank you for the help and the review! I've checked out the review you've mentioned (500 Turbo) and I do find myself enjoying these more fast paced reviews. Keep up the good work!
Fiat is a car, Smart is just not very useful unless you do something like small house repairs or newsreporting, and you need to park in a lot of different spots throughout the day.
I have the fiat 500 which is sound for short commutes 10 or twenty minutes or so any longer and the car becomes uncomfortable and noisy especially the tiers as for taking it on the motorway/ freeway all I can say is you will be sorry and relived to get out of the thing when you park up.
Unfortunately only 1441 Fiats (all models) were sold nationwide in May 2018. I don't think FIAT will stay in North America. They could use the assembly line in Mexico to build more Jeeps or Rams. I doubt with such low sales, they would bother importing them from Italy.
