The apple slices have definitely been around for longer than a decade. My brother has never been a fan of potatoes (yes, even fries and chips!) so when McDonald's introduced the apple dippers (they used to come with a caramel sauce) that became his go-to. The last time either of us had a Happy Meal was probably around 2005-2007, so it's probably been nearly TWENTY years since they came out with the apple slices!
Emmy, future in the car bottle opener hack: depending on your seat belt buckle shape, If you have one with a square hole in the metal part, you can use that as a bottle opener.
I knew that second burger would fail based on that pitiful amount of diced onions. I'm with you Emmy, those dehydrated onions (and for me the orange cheese) is what makes McD's burgers!
Am I remembering wrong? I thought there were two or three pickle slices on a Mc D burger? Then again maybe they downsized, it's probably been 30 years since I had a straight up Mc D's burger... I also thought it was real onions too, then again maybe there are differences by country, since I'm not in USA. Nuggets weren't even available here till I was 8.
So funny, we got burgers at a much more expensive burger place and I was annoyed as can be that the cheese wasn’t melted. It was literally cold. Say what you want about McDonald’s, but the cheese is always melted.
Nice you're enjoying it! I also feel like McDonald's signature flavor for their savory stuff is that typical dried onion flavor and I only found that out after I bought dried onion powder and tried it. There's an apple puree + gelatin cake (2 ingredient recipe) going around. Have you ever tried it? I wonder if it works like they show.
Your kids and I are probably around the same age then, however I remember having to pick apples or fries back then, I never got both in a happy meal so maybe that was updated too lol. McDonalds in MS
Emmy you made my day when you said the whole thing about those reconstituted dry onions!!! I couldn’t agree more!! Those things are my favorite part of a MCDs hamburger too! 🍔 yum! !
Emmy, you should ALWAYS have a bottle opener keychain on your keys or in your car! I started carrying them because we drink a lot of craft beer, but I have used them more for sodas than beer! I keep one on every set of keys.
Emmy, your make me genuinely so happy, your personality is beautiful and the way you describe the taste of the food is great, i'm so grateful that i got to know your channel
Fun fact Emmy, I worked at McDonald's and the pickle slices are also dehydrated and reconstituted! It blew my mind when I was told to take a bucket of dry pickle slices and add water!😂😊
Honestly it makes a ton of sense. Dill pickles aren't common in Poland (normal pickles very much are, just not dill pickles) and I can imagine to keep an authentic flavor it would be hard to transport them in jars etc to different countries. Definitely a transport saver
My husband and I were talking about the onions on the McDonald's hamburgers tonight. He was saying that he didn't know why he loved them so much, but someday he just craves the onions. They are great on the burger. Great video as usual.
I always have a keyring bottle opener, and a screw top opener in a bright green, and a nail clipper on my one set of keys; usually the one that stays in my purse for the push button start car. That is the one I give to the valet, very easy to spot my keys when I go to pick our car up.
Your door latch works perfectly fine as a bottle opener. It’s great that you did this taste test but it also makes me sad because of the price. Everything that they’ve used cost much much less then meat. The impossible products are good but very much overpriced. As it’s still considered a Niche market. also funny. I’m not sure that they’re trying to compare their burger with McDonald’s I think they’re just making a Interesting marketable vegan Restaurant. Although I’ve never had a McDonald’s burger or any Burger that’s not veg. In 6 decades The smell of a mcd happy meal Is really nice :-)
Burger King's Impossible Whopper is pretty much the standard for how those should be made, it really is a 1:1 deal. As for the price, considering that I can get a regular combo with 10 dollars, this isn't /terrible/ but it's not quite as ideal as it should be, I will agree there.
@@EzraM5 we also have to factor in the chicken nuggets and that it's in LA I personally hate the burger King impossible whopper, it is way to dry and just overly bland- Although I do prefer beyond so Carl's Jr is usually a great option for myself but for impossible and getting that very flavorful not so dry taste, Mr beasts impossible burgers are good 🤌 I don't think I was huge on burgers from McDonald's growing up, more so their chicken and then only the fries or breakfast items so I haven't tasted McDonald's in years but I do know I was never a huge fan
@@EzraM5 I will also say that there price tag seems just a bit high considering their food doesn't seem to be the best and it's in LA which also soo so so many fully vegan restaurants that for cheaper you could get a way better experience- definitely something to try once for nostalgia then move on
We NEED that video of you recreating a McDonalds burger at home with the reconstituted dry onions, I searched your channel and couldn't find it, that would be a great video, I don't understand how that works at home.
Well, now I feel like Emmy needs to do a video testing different "hacks" for opening a bottle without an opener 😂😂 Cuz I could think of 2 off the top of my head she could do in the car
I would consider the Mexican Coke the prize. I have opened those with a makeshift bottle opener of my key in the key ring to go around the cap and pry up.
when I was little the apple slices came with a little tub of caramel sauce! I’m not surprised if they omitted it nowadays but I always liked them better with the sauce skdjdkdj
Just a FYI: Your vehicle has a bottle opener built in the door latch. Open your door, and there is a u shaped latch that your door connects with to keep it shut, and you can put you bottle cap there to use it to open non-twist tops.
Thank you so much for this- my one big childhood memory is having McDonald’s and getting the toys and the food and when I wasn’t feeling well it was one thing that I could eat you know- it has a significance in my core memories I don’t need as much now because I know about all the stuff that goes into it but occasionally there’s nothing better than a french fry or a burger when I’m not feeling well
Emmy, do you think you could try making your own vegetarian version of a McDonald's cheeseburger? Or have you ever tried to? I so want a good veggie burger, but I don't really like any of them!
The impossible or Beyond burgers made at home are my favorites. Those brands made at a good vegan restaurant are usually so much better, since they know how to make them taste like a real burger. Those burgers are usually terrible at places like Burger King or White Castle. I didn't like theirs at all. Try Sauce Stache's or The Burger Dude's channel to help you make an incredible vegan burger at home. I have a few playlists on my channel that might help you.❤
I feel the same way about McDonald's. When we were growing up our dad would us McDonald's when we were sick, when we started feeling better he would get McDonald's. There were no Happy meals when I was a kid, I'm a child of the 70s. When the small fry came in a paper envelope thingy. But, yes, very nostalgic, and those onions are everything
First time seeing an in-car Emmy video. Interesting. 😊 My thought seeing this Mr Charlie box was McDowell's, the knockoff McDonald's from Coming To America. It's an 80s classic. 😎 Also, Halloween's coming up and honestly Emmy you could easily pull off a Scooby-Doo theme with Velma. It's the glasses and the dark hair for sure. Honestly...might be craving some McDonald's right now. I wasn't so much into the burgers but a goto for me growing up was the nugs.
Emmy: I want to drink my coke but no bottle opener! Me a mexican: you can use the seatbelt buckle, a shoelace, the rim of the car, I mean there are many ways to open it right there. Lol fun fact, I've never owned a bottle opener.
They have a bottle opener on the wall, near the door at Mr. Charlie's! The chicken nugget is also by Impossible! Other than the fries, you can go to the grocery store and that $10 meal, minus $5 for fries, will be about $5.
Wait, McDonalds and Burger King uses rehydated dried onions? I never knew that! Now I definitely have to try that to see if I can get that same flavour profile I really like without having to go out! ❤️🤤
You can use the seatbelt clip to open the bottle. Wrap one hand around the top of the bottle just below the cap. Then use the clip like a lever over your hand that acts as the fulcrum.
I’m really surprised about the onion thing being nostalgic. I’ve never heard of a kid ordering a burger with the onions! I thought it was one of those things people only like when they’re older, like coffee.
they come automatically! you can choose to omit onions if you tell them but if you’re a kid you don’t really think of that, especially if your parents are doing the actual ordering. when I was a kid I always just ate them (and the pickle) off the top of the bun first and then ate the rest of the burger to get them out of the way lmao
It's really interesting that when you were pregnant you wanted food that comforted you which was your childhood memory of McDonald's as I have a similar story. I've been ill since I was a child and went through many procedures, surgeries etc and my parents always got me McDonald's (chocolate sundae and chips which I dunk in the ice cream and still do at age 44). As an adult I still get McDonald's after any medical procedure. This went awry when I had my wisdom teeth out and tried to eat the fries dipped into my sundae but ended up just eating the sundae. We didn't get takeaways/fast food except in the case of health issues so I associate fast food as a treat and rarely have it.
When I was pregnant I had a craaaaving for a McDonald’s kids meal hamburger. I’m vegan so I that craving went unrequited but now I want to try and reconstitute onions and make it myself!!!
Just saw your "Eat the ducky moss" shirt in your merch shop, and I can't stop laughing!!! I took several semesters of Japanese and recognized the word for "thanks", itadakimasu. Kinda like "Don't touch my mustache!" Do itashimashite!
Yeah, like in Toy Story 2! (I did NOT like Al as a kid and I think he's even worse now that I'm old enough to understand just how bad his business model is, how bad his hygiene is, and how narcissistic he is. I still think he should've been jailed for theft and fraud, not simply continue to work at that crummy Toy Barn after Jessie, Bullseye, and Woody escaped. He shouldn't be allowed NEAR a child ever!)
She's right about the onions. I worked there as a kid, we put this bag of powder in a bucket with water and mixed it and it became onions lol. I wouldn't think there would be anything "un-vegan" about that and they really should have those on this "burger" in the unhappy meal
McDonald's first started serving apple slices in 2004. I was a manager there and I remember getting tiny sample bags that we handed out before we actually started selling the product. Since then America's sliced apple consumption has more than tripled.
Apple slices are tart because of the acid added to them to prevent them from turning brown. Ascorbic acid or maybe citric acid is listed in the ingredients for the apple slices.
I have used the "bottom side" (the flat bit, where there are no grooves) of my house (and/or work office) key to open non-twisty caps. It sometimes takes a bit to find exactly the right key and angle, but you can often pop off the cap, and then taunt it for not keeping the delicious fluid from me. :)
Sometimes I order the apple slices for my guinea pig as a treat. He likes them (and it keeps him from begging for my food at the same time, haha), and it's pretty much the only piggy-safe thing I know of that I can order from McDonald's.
The side salad is ok. Yes its iceberg lettuce but pigs can have that in moderation like any fruit. Plus it has tomatoes which my pigs loved so so much.

Emmy, I craved McDonald's hamburger Happy Meal with all 7 of my kid's while pregnant. Your not the only one. I don't know what it is! I grew up in the Midwest so I always had a small chocolate shake with mine. When I was a child the meal only came with a small fry and toy. I still have the entire Disney collection of princess dolls in their packaging. I got them when I was pregnant with my last child, so they are 20 years old this year! My granddaughters are always begging me for them. I don't give in, as now they are worth a little money, lol! @@leahunfeigned5955 Are you allergic to soy/soy-based products? Or maybe you have texture or taste/smell sensitivities that make you not like them? It's ok to not like certain foods, btw. Everyone's different. I know people who hate chocolate. That's the reason I despise guava and papaya. Guava smells amazing to me, but it doesn't taste good to me (very bland) and it's too mushy and seedy. Papaya doesn't taste terrible to me, but I absolutely hate the smell (it smells like barf to me) and therefore I've almost thrown up when I tried to eat it. I almost upchucked as a kid when my mom had me taste it for the first time (she didn't force me to eat it when she realized I was starting to gag and had to spit it out), and I almost did it again when I offered to cut one up because my mom loves it... it's been 15 years since the first time I tried to eat papaya and nope. I just don't like it.
You can sometimes use the door latch of your rental car as an ersatz bottle opener. Back in the old days before twist off caps, young people would find themselves with a 6 pack of beer in the car and nobody had an opener.
I was coerced into eating lunch at a vegan restaurant once, about fifteen years ago. Once. Never again. After tasting the "spaghetti and veggie balls", I couldn't help saying, "Where's the BEEF!?" Just a very sad, very bad experience.
I'm looking at that meal...all that sugar in the Coke (and how is that sugar cane harvested?), those giant fries, the heavily processed ingredients to make the fake nuggets and burger. Not healthier at all. Do people really think the vegan meal is healthy?
You could have tried opening the coke on the loop (for want of a better description) that the car door latches to when shut. We did that alot growing up :D
I learned about seat belts is that the little hole that goes into the mechanism before you connect your seat belt to your vehicle if you look at the belt part or that piece goes into it has a hole in there and if it's perfect for opening sodas up just like that one 🥤
There's lots of MacGyver methods for opening a bottle! I can usually pry the cap off one crimp at a time with any sturdy metal pointed object, like a car key...
Most cars have a hook in the door latch that makes a great bottle opener or a key will do. Slowly leverage the top around it will pop off in 4 or.5 tries

You can also open the door and use the little metal loop thing from the lock
Ooo....💫
Or you can always do the folded paper hack
Or a wedding ring or a key or a lighter or even a piece of paper will all pop a bottle top
A coin works very well also!
Ah! Watching your videos always makes me feel so warm inside
I knew that second burger would fail based on that pitiful amount of diced onions. I'm with you Emmy, those dehydrated onions (and for me the orange cheese) is what makes McD's burgers!
Unhappy meal is a proper name for it.
Say what you want about McDonald’s, but the cheese is always melted.
their cheese is good. I know it's just processed crap, but it's the best processed crap
Try their vegan Double Cheeseburger, it's supposed to be delicious and better than MCDS. The plain hamburgers at MCDS were never great either. 🍔❤
Ooo...thanks for the suggestion. 🍎🍰
@@emmymade You're very welcome! I felt you'd like the idea! 🤗
I used to work at McDonald’s. I always loved reconstituting the onions. I’m not sure why.
She is just so smart in her descriptions, I can taste it as she explains it. Its really brilliant.
My kids are adults, McDonald's in CA (not sure about the rest of the country) had apples in the early-mid 2000s so probably closer to 20 years
Your kids and I are probably around the same age then, however I remember having to pick apples or fries back then, I never got both in a happy meal so maybe that was updated too lol. McDonalds in MS
Wowzers ⏰💨
@@forgetmeknot1964 true. They did get to choose (sometimes 😁)
Emmy you made my day when you said the whole thing about those reconstituted dry onions!!! I couldn’t agree more!! Those things are my favorite part of a MCDs hamburger too! 🍔 yum!
!
I love the flavor of the reconstituted dry onions too!! I found that I can get a similar favor on my own burgers by adding onion powder to ketchup 🤤
I loved hearing your respectful analysis applied to this food of my childhood ^-^
WHAT?!👀
I'm shocked lol. I guess it saves on transport?
No they don't. Both come in large 2 gallon plastic jars.
*own a mcds
I worked at a McDonalds in Canada and we got our pickles in bags and they weren't dehydrated. So this is crazy to me
Honestly it makes a ton of sense.
Wow the contradiction lol I thought the bottle water came from the unhappy meal. 😂 the burp was the best closing 👍🏻💕😂
A seat belt buckle can open bottles too.
Burger King's Impossible Whopper is pretty much the standard for how those should be made, it really is a 1:1 deal.
As for the price, considering that I can get a regular combo with 10 dollars, this isn't /terrible/ but it's not quite as ideal as it should be, I will agree there.
@@EzraM5 we also have to factor in the chicken nuggets and that it's in LA
I personally hate the burger King impossible whopper, it is way to dry and just overly bland-
Although I do prefer beyond so Carl's Jr is usually a great option for myself but for impossible and getting that very flavorful not so dry taste, Mr beasts impossible burgers are good 🤌
I don't think I was huge on burgers from McDonald's growing up, more so their chicken and then only the fries or breakfast items so I haven't tasted McDonald's in years but I do know I was never a huge fan
@@EzraM5 I will also say that there price tag seems just a bit high considering their food doesn't seem to be the best and it's in LA which also soo so so many fully vegan restaurants that for cheaper you could get a way better experience- definitely something to try once for nostalgia then move on
@@SabrinApollo I was hoping she'd use the seatbelt.
EMMY!! i just wanted to say i used to watch you growing up. i watched your poppin cooking videos a lot. thank you for being a part of my childhood ❤
We NEED that video of you recreating a McDonalds burger at home with the reconstituted dry onions, I searched your channel and couldn't find it, that would be a great video, I don't understand how that works at home.
I was hoping that the blooper reel at the end was something road rage-y that required censored bleeps. You dashed a man's dreams, Emmy!
Well, now I feel like Emmy needs to do a video testing different "hacks" for opening a bottle without an opener 😂😂 Cuz I could think of 2 off the top of my head she could do in the car
Me too!!
Definitely! I can do it with a key or a keyring
Yep! I always use the metal part of the seatbelt. Lol. Works really well!
Maggie: what a great hack!
@@ClanImprobable Aww. Thank you. Glad I could help 🤗
I just adore how honest you are
I would consider the Mexican Coke the prize. I have opened those with a makeshift bottle opener of my key in the key ring to go around the cap and pry up.
Love this style of video, I love how you review things. I’d definitely be interested in your take on every time the fast food chains launch new items.
when I was little the apple slices came with a little tub of caramel sauce! I’m not surprised if they omitted it nowadays but I always liked them better with the sauce skdjdkdj
THE CARAMEL WAS LIKE THE BEST PART
Just a FYI: Your vehicle has a bottle opener built in the door latch. Open your door, and there is a u shaped latch that your door connects with to keep it shut, and you can put you bottle cap there to use it to open non-twist tops.
Yeah but then she'd have to open the door in the middle of LA...
Hey emmy- luv ya- awe how adorable is this meal!!!! Jinkies- you do look like Velma
Some day you should try a Big Mac bubble up bake
Thank you so much for this- my one big childhood memory is having McDonald’s and getting the toys and the food and when I wasn’t feeling well it was one thing that I could eat you know- it has a significance in my core memories I don’t need as much now because I know about all the stuff that goes into it but occasionally there’s nothing better than a french fry or a burger when I’m not feeling well
Quick somebody get emmy a cute Keychain bottle opener
My thought seeing this Mr Charlie box was McDowell's, the knockoff McDonald's from Coming To America. It's an 80s classic. 😎
Also, Halloween's coming up and honestly Emmy you could easily pull off a Scooby-Doo theme with Velma. It's the glasses and the dark hair for sure.
Honestly...might be craving some McDonald's right now. I wasn't so much into the burgers but a goto for me growing up was the nugs.
@emmymade When in a pinch, the door latch sometimes can be used as a bottle opener
Emmy is like a real life wholesome cartoon character.
Bottle opener is the seat belt buckle!!
Emmy: I want to drink my coke but no bottle opener!
Me a mexican: you can use the seatbelt buckle, a shoelace, the rim of the car, I mean there are many ways to open it right there. Lol fun fact, I've never owned a bottle opener.
I know exactly what you mean about the reconstituted dehydrated onions! I actually love them!
Yay!👏🏼
@@emmymade OMG Emmy you replied to my comment! My life has been made! ❤️
you must be very happy mom
That hamburger looks strangely big, perhaps the camera just makes it appear bigger then what it is.
I agree with you about the reconstituted onions!
There is just something about the tiny chopped onions in a McDonald’s burger 🤌🤌🤌
Hello 👋 how are you doing today 😊
The onions are why I never got the burger. When ordered specifically without them they always came anyway :(
It's really interesting that when you were pregnant you wanted food that comforted you which was your childhood memory of McDonald's as I have a similar story.
Just love the combo of pickle, onion+ketchup+mustard of mcd..especially with triple cheese burger one, taste gourmet for me 🍔
I like it when you get out of the studio. Nice change of scenery even if it's in a car.
I will never not love Emmy fr
Apple slices are tart because of the acid added to them to prevent them from turning brown. Ascorbic acid or maybe citric acid is listed in the ingredients for the apple slices.
I miss when the apple slices came with caramel 🤤
I have used the "bottom side" (the flat bit, where there are no grooves) of my house (and/or work office) key to open non-twisty caps. It sometimes takes a bit to find exactly the right key and angle, but you can often pop off the cap, and then taunt it for not keeping the delicious fluid from me. :)
Love this. I wish McDonald's would offer an impossible Burger version of their menu items
@@evil1by1 The McDonald's places around here don't have salad anymore.
If you want a really good vegan burger in SoCal you’ve got to try Monty’s Good Burger! It’s in Riverside and soooooo good!
We also found a Monty's in LA, on a hillside somewhere not too far from Hollywood
@@punklejunk oh yeah! I forgot about that location. I’m closer to Riverside so I tend to just go there. The strawberry shake 🍓and the original good burger with the house sauce…. ✨chefs kiss✨ and I’m not vegan or vegetarian; it’s just that good!
You should keep a bottle opener on your keychain - it’s a nice to have… I have a very slim inconspicuous souvenir one & it has come in handy!!!
i’m not vegan or vegetarian but i always prefer vegan chicken nuggets to the mashed, reformed nuggets anywhere.
I'm glad that they came out with a vegan alternative for those who follow that diet trend. It was fun going down recollection road with you today!
Impossible burgers are great! Even making them at home are pretty great! The key is getting some char on them. So good! (◍•ᴗ•◍)❤
They taste good but for some reason they make me nauseated. Most of the faux meat foods make me ill.
Three times the price for a "vegan burger joint" meal? That is so very wrong on so many levels. 😝
It was clearly much more food
Emmy you’re just adorable 🥰
you’re the only one who can make the happy meal seem non toxic 🍔 ❤️
That unhappy meal is not worth $15.
I agree with u about the reconstituted onions. They’re one of my fav parts of McDonald’s 🍔
eww, id rather eat a vegan, than eat vegan "food".
Don’t be rude to other lifestyles.
Do people really think the vegan meal is healthy?
there are some good vegetarian/vegan things. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.
@@lancerevell5979 Sorry you had that experience, that was one restaurant though. There are plenty of amazing vegan restaurants out there.
You could have tried opening the coke on the loop (for want of a better description) that the car door latches to when shut. We did that alot growing up :D
I learned about seat belts is that the little hole that goes into the mechanism before you connect your seat belt to your vehicle if you look at the belt part or that piece goes into it has a hole in there and if it's perfect for opening sodas up
just like that one 🥤
Man I never heard of Mr Charlie’s , but man I wish they had one near me in NC
There's lots of MacGyver methods for opening a bottle! I can usually pry the cap off one crimp at a time with any sturdy metal pointed object, like a car key...
Most cars have a hook in the door latch that makes a great bottle opener or a key will do. Slowly leverage the top around it will pop off in 4 or.5 tries
I agree with you about the dehydrated onions. I always get extra on my burgers.
i love those dehydrated onions too! when I order a quarter pounder i ask for them instead of the regular onion slices.
NGL McDonald's small burgers are iconic. Still love them. And when youre broke they're REALLY a blessing
