If you do retire, I strongly recommend the Sit Less Than 4 Hours Challenge. It is what is says on the tin, as sitting longer daily promotes a lot of health problems. I personally wish someone had told me this when I was in my early twenties, but, there you go!

I'm a fan of the caffeine-nap; drink a coffee or other caffeinated beverage, then truck in for a 20 minute nap. Because it takes about 20 mins for the caffeine to kick in, you wake rested from the nap which wasn't long enough to enter REM states, and now you're energized!

Craig, I love you in a parasocial way. So I feel that as an audio engineer I should mention that taping off large parts of a shotgun mic windscreen is affecting the sound, making it sound boxy and less clear. Clarity is just a brandless windscreen away! 🙌 Thanks for being you, sweet beard man!

I also *had* a hard time falling asleep but I discovered an amazing trick (it works for me at least). So, I imagine myself in a situation that aids my brain into a dream. If you're so inclined .... imagining a situation of a 'dirty nature' might work but it doesn't even have to be that. I've just learned that imagining a home my wife and i saw once in an open house that I loved with a random maid (again, it's not dirty per se) or someone cooking. It's enough to get my brain thinking "who is the person ... what might she represent ... what might she say/do".
It is the single best tool to aid in my sleep, even more than the tart cherry juice or the sleep gummies (which are both pretty awesome when I need them)

  • @tutacat
    @tutacat 8 месяцев назад

Humans have biphasic sleep based on how long the night is. We need to sleep the same amount of time, but the night changes in length (depending on location), so during winter people woke up in the middle, when there is less productive sunlight time, and during summer they stay asleep more.

I’m older than dirt…..When I was a child, my sexual molester would strike in the night. It took me awhile to realize his ‘pattern’ of timing, until I realized he would visit my room between midnight and 2 am. Yep, I stayed awake, as he was relying on me being vulnerable to begin his nastiness while I was asleep. How did I do this? We (yes, I shared a bedroom with 2 slightly older sisters) had an alarm clock in the bedroom - one of those old crank style clocks. By age 8, I realized I could set the time for 11:30 pm, set it under my pillow to muffle the sound of the ringing alarm, wake up and stay awake for a few hours, and reset the clock for 6:30 am wake up to get ready for school. The molestation stopped when he realized I was fully awake when he came to my bedside. That, and the fact that I’d developed a nasty infection that required a visit to the doctor. How many 8 year old girls need a gynecological exam? Yeah, I remember having to take some orange-flavored ‘medicine’ for many, many weeks. The 1960s were horrible for me, until I figured out a way to stop being victimized. I continued to do this when my two older sisters shared a room together, and my two younger sisters were moved into the room with me. On the positive side, I was able to study and complete college projects deep into the night, while my classmates fell asleep.

Man, I just cannot nap. I have a hard enough time going to bed at a reasonable hour. When I was laid off I slipped into a 30/12 hour cycle. Sometimes I slept at night, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon. I just went to sleep whenever I got tired, slept for about 12 hours, then got up and stayed away for another 30ish hours.

I have ADHD and my partner can instantly nod off. Its quite common. This isnt medical advice, just speculation. Craig you 110% have adhd. Maybe you already know this. Maybe im wrong and projecting. But whenever you talk about sleep issues or creativity it's spot on with adhd symptoms and the exact very things i also deal with down to partners who can instantly sleep. Its actually a common part of it. If you've been trying to hide it or keep it to yourself im sorry, it reminds me of the time Daniel Howell tried to insist he wasnt gay. Feel free to tell me im wrong but id love a confirmation in either direction. Parasocial relationships are weird when we talk about our problems and people think they know how to fix them but its simultaneously actively shared info and none of my business.

Today I learned that people in medieval Europe slept in two phases. They went to bed at sundown, slept for a couple of hours, woke up around midnight, stayed awake for a bit to work or chill and then went to bed again until dawn. It changed when gas lamps became a thing and people stayed awake after dark longer.

I have sleep apnea and it is so weird the random stuff that can contribute such as the size of your tonsils, hanging ball thing, thickness of your tongue. Also, there is central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea. Most people think of obstructive but central is just literally your brain forgetting to breathe. My hubby never heard me stop breathing in my sleep ever though I did have a light snore. I was stopping breathing dozens of times an hour much to our surprise. Sleep studies are even being conducted at home so you might not even have to go sleep somewhere else for a night.

I second this! I didn't wake up gasping, I didn't snore. I just...wasn't going into deep sleep phases at all. Apparently it was because my brain would catch the apnea episodes before they could even manifest, literally a second or two, and would put me back into sleep phase 1 so I was half awake. We were only able to tell the underlying cause with a in-lab sleep study.
Me and all my family members were fairly certain I didn't have sleep apnea, that I just struggled with sleep. I absolutely have sleep apnea.

I used to think that people who napped were lazy quitters. Than I developed an autoimmune disorder, along with having a lot of young kids at home, and a baby and chronically sick child who were up at night a lot. A sweet mom friend pulled me aside and told me that naps are crucial for moms to function. Napping was the most bizarre thing to me at first. I had to make myself do it and I felt so restless and lazy, until I actually fell asleep and napped. My friend told me to do it everyday for two weeks, and it changed my life. I was so far behind on sleep, I was always exhausted. After about a month of napping daily, I felt so much better!

For what it's worth. I didn't wake up gasping, I didn't snore. I just...wasn't going into deep sleep phases at all. Apparently it was because my brain would catch the apnea episodes before they could even manifest, literally a second or two, and would put me back into sleep phase 1 so I was half awake. So the moment I crossed phase II, it would kick me back to I. We were only able to tell the underlying cause with a in-lab sleep study. Sleeping with a cpap, has completely my eliminated my need for naps. There is a significant difference.
Just...If you are having sleep problems, even if you are "fairly certain" you don't have sleep apnea, just get a sleep study. Sleep study can find all sorts of things.

Naps make me feel disoriented, cranky, and more tired. So I only nap on airplanes and when I am sick. I am luckily a sleeping brick like Chyna. Thank you Craig for bringing Nuance to this controversial issue!

Agreed. I’ve always been jealous of people who can nap and what that must be like. Even if I set a timer for whatever is considered the ideal amount of napping, I still wake up groggy, with a pounding headache and confused.

I’ve discovered that if I very drowsy I can nod off pretty easy hit the trick is to wake up after like 20 min. When I was younger I napped long and too much but they were not refreshing.

Naps are cool. I nap... sometimes... when I'm tired. Usually I wake up at night and write in my journal and talk to God. He and I have a good relationship. Then he helps me go back to sleep. 💤

Wow, thanks for the video. My sleep issues are similar to yours and my husband tends to sleep like your wife. The only thing that has helped my sleep is to read before bed, and when I wake up in the middle of the night (to use the bathroom), I have to make sure I don't start thinking. If my brain wakes up and I start to think about life, work, etc, I can't fall back to sleep.

One of the best! Talk about what you love!
And what's not to love about naps? Don't do 'em myself, but happy to support my wife, who does. Gives me peace to cook/create a dinner.

I've always had the same sleep issues as Craig and my followers like to (mis)diagnose me, too, but at least in my case, I'm pretty sure it's neurodivergence. I have a Very Noisy Brain that makes it hard for me to fall asleep, and I'm very sensitive to sounds, smells, light, etc., which makes it very difficult for me to stay asleep (and when I wake prematurely, I'm almost always tossing and turning at least an hour before my brain finally shuts up enough for me to sleep.) I find a repeated guided meditation helps shut up my brain (a story/fantasy I run through that's the same every time) and blackout curtains, smooth covers, lack of cats (T_T), an amazing pillow, and a fan are a must for me to stay asleep.
I also take naps daily, though I never fall asleep (it's impossible.) It's literally just to breathe, relax, hydrate my poor dry eyes, and listen to music (I find loud/fast stuff like metal to be the most soothing.) I'm sure Craig is tired of his fans trying to diagnose him, but I don't think I've ever heard him mention ADHD and I've often wondered if he's on that spectrum and if that's at least part of his sleep issues.

Hi @PrettyTranslatorSarahMoon! It's good to come across your comment randomly here. I used to watch your videos about translation :) I just visited Japan for the first time and thought of you. I also am very sensitive with the noisy brain, definitely my neurospicy flavRpak affects my sleep. Anyway, hope you're doing great and see you around.

I was diagnosed with hypersomnia, and I can't function without a mid-day nap. I am very thankful that my job allows me to take a two-hour break to eat and nap. They are very flexible, and I am so grateful for it!

I don't snore. My doctors also doubted that I have sleep apnea. The sleep study revealed moderate central sleep anea (my brain just stops telling my body to breathe). I always had a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, and always clocked myself as a light sleeper. The study showed I would wake up every ten minutes because my O2 was dropping so low.
I trust you to know yourself best, just sharing my experience because your experience sounds so much like mine.
My CPAP literally had me sleeping like a rock through the night on day 2 and woke up alert. It's absolutely wild how much everything changed!

Have had terrible sleep my whole life. Always the last kid at the sleepover to fall asleep. Have had people telling me I need to improve my sleep hygiene/turn off blue lights/restrict my caffeine/take sleeping pills etc. etc. etc. as long as I can remember. Turns out, none of that was ever going to help, because the REASON I've always slept badly is because I had undiagnosed ADHD with delayed sleep phase syndrome. I'm not built for bedtime. My circadian rhythm is just kinda busted. Without life stuff forcing me to do otherwise, I will just slip into a 5am - 1pm sleep cycle. WITH life stuff, I will fall into a 5am to 10am nap cycle, with a half hour nap before dinner, and feel vaguely crappy the whole day. I can be in bed by 10pm every night, and I, without fail, will stay awake for HOURS, staring at the ceiling, hating every minute. It just absolutely shits me that the world won't just let me be a damn vampire and sleep when I'm tired!

Thank you for this. My body frequently insists on naps and I hate it. The naps are great, but I hate needing them not to feel like crap. So yes, I will actually schedule the sleep study that my doctor referred me to

I've been watching you for a while (I do wonder sometimes if you ever recognize my name in the comments) and I'm NOT sick about you talking about your sleep issues. But then again, I just enjoy listening to you talk, so it doesn't really matter what you talk about, I do also enjoy the interactions between you and Chyna. Keep up the good work and stay strong! ^^
