    It was a nice weekend getaway to Ladoga Lake, one of the biggest lakes in Russia. Ladoga is situated in Leningrad region and it's about an hour trip from St. Petersburg. If you would like to travel off the beaten track, you should definitely visit Ladoga Lake.

    One of the things I love about your videos is the fact that you talk plainly without fuss or "plastic" for the show. Like that it's simple, pleasant, relaxing and people crave to watch more. Keep it that way, don't get into the tendency of "americanize" the narrative. You are doing it just perfect!

    +Thank you for the video. I have been watching a series called "The World at War" and Leningrad has just been featured. It was telling us how many people starved to death and when some could get things to eat, it was bread made with sawdust. Did the railway to Lake Ladoga manage to operate during the war? The lake looks very beautiful. Are there bears in the area?

    • @StPetersburgme
      @StPetersburgme  3 года назад

      Thank you for your comment! It's so nice that you can watch series of how Russians managed to survive through those rough years!
      Yes, the railway operated during the war. Trains delivered goods and food, and evacuated children from the sieged and starving St. Petersburg.

      @@StPetersburgme Thank you. I am a little surprised about the railway as I thought the Nazis had bombed them all and there was only the ice road left to get supplies through. Did you see my question about the bears?

    Beautiful place, I have learned so much in the past about the siege of Leningrad and its great to see the lake, the monument with the holes from German shells is the Boiler from an old steam train so it must have been hit with shells many times, the soviet peoples struggle especially at Leningrad remi ds me of our struggle here in Ireland and like you we never surrendered for 800 years, I always feel close at heart to the Soviet people, we know in our souls what freedom costs and we have paid the price so much my friend. I hope you and your friend enjoyed your day out from lockdown, you and I are so lucky to live in beautiful Countries 🌹

    In School, I read a Dutch book on the evacuations you are talking about in this video. Driving trucks on the ice. The book was called Boris and it described the harsh conditions during the siege of Leningrad. Attacks on the convoys were done even by warplanes.
    Again a link, unfortunately there is no translation for this article: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_(boek)?wprov=sfti1
    I like the arch. From a certain perspective it will look a complete arch. What's to see from there?
    Any idea on how they keep the fire burning?
    Nature is beautiful there though! Fun video to watch again. I like to see the countryside. 😁
    Edit: 1. is there any tidal changes for the lake? Is it big enough to have some tide?
    2. Doesn't your friend get fed up from you and your camera? 😂
    What a beautiful train. I love trains. 🙈
    Edit 2: the supports of the track have recently been replaced. The supports are now concrete. The wooden ones are still lying around on the sites. This dead-end is very much in use though. But, for what? It seems to be a very natural environment. 🤔 ooh wait. A trainstation.. 🙈 foolish me. 😂

    Wow, it looks just like our Lake Erie. Absolutely huge, with giant ships way out near the horizon.
    I find it absolutely amazing that it freezes solid enough that trucks were able to transport over it. Erie only freezes close to shore.
