  • Thousands of farmers across Europe have ramped up protests against EU measures and rising prices, with roads blocked in Poland, Hungary, Spain, and Belgium.
    In western Poland some 1,400 tractors took part in a protest in Poznan and roads were blocked across the country, while in Spain, farmers cut off traffic hoping to enter cities including Toledo and Zaragoza for the fourth day in a row.
    Many of the farmers bore banners saying no to the EU's Green Deal, aimed at bringing down greenhouse gas emissions.
    Farmers in Poland and Hungary are also complaining that the European Union is not doing enough to halt cheap imports from Ukraine undercutting local produce. They want the EU to restore a requirement on Ukrainian truckers to obtain a permit to work across the 27 member states.

    The sign on the tractor - No Farmers, No Food, No Future - is so right. Governments often say that their first duty is security and defence, but I would argue the equal to that is feeding the nation, enabled by policy not stifled by bureaucracy.

    As for "what to plant and when", just look up something called 'Cash Crops', and why it needs to be regulated in the first place. As for the climate plan over the coming years and decades, it's absolutely insane and will never succeed. It forces home owners to pay for renovations to reach energy rating A by 2050, and this is planned to be implemented gradually with forcing renovations to at least energy rating D in less than 10 years (not sure if it's by 2030 or 2033, but it's one or the other and it's easier to just say less than ten years).
    This climate neutral plan by 2050 will never happen. It's pure insanity. They're forcing major costs and losses just for the sake of climate neutrality, that the governments won't shoulder. Forcing major costs on citizens for this, will never be able to be practically implemented, ever.

    • @TomTomicMic
      @TomTomicMic 3 месяца назад +1

      It will be implemented but not by putting in an unrealistic date, that will make the economics rise to a factor that is unaffordable, and not all the renewable energy systems are viable at present, they are still a work in partial progress, the current politicians will be dead or retired by 2050 and will just be extended, all the stuff that can be implemented without it costing more will be adopted quicker, everything else won't. Europe has a green energy policy because we don't have an independent energy supply, wind, nuclear, solar and grid upgrades in part will give us a majority of energy independence before 2050 and that's the bit that's important, the rest can follow, if the greens want more, make them pay!?!

    • @Joppi1992
      @Joppi1992 3 месяца назад +2

      @@TomTomicMic I'm not saying they won't try to implement it. They already voted to pass it last summer after all. The problem is that it's completely unrealistic. People won't accept it. Even just the part that affects farmers have already made them perform these international protests.
      Imagine what will happen when all home owners, including apartment buildings, will need to comply with the new energy rating requirements, and the gradual increase required for it which will keep costing a lot of people a lot more money.
      Then there is even more to consider. The average amount of greenhouse gas just for cooling and heating a home per person per year, is 700kg in the EU as a whole. That's just the average, so keep in mind there are those above it too.
      Then there are countries like for example in Scandinavia, where the average is around 20-30kg per person per year that's spent on just cooling and heating.
      But these energy ratings will essentially affect everyone the same economically. These kinds of issues will also be driving up the amount of controversy surrounding this whole insane plan. People will likely boycott it, across all of EU.

      I don't mind a foreigner pursuing a career in my country, so long as they are there legally. Overall, I think that it is so often overlooked that producers are price takers, not price makers. Producers are only able to sell a product for what someone else is willing to buy it for. If they made their own prices then the middlemen wouldn't buy it and you're looking at $5.00 USD for tomatoes in August. If you want to support farmers then buy directly from them.@@user-qp6uk7bw6z

    The average farm in Europe needs 4.5 years to recoup operating costs and break even. If farm failures, a dire threat to the human race at this time are to be cut in half, the government will need subsidize education and start up costs, provide land grants, provide equipment etc. If this were done, and it reduced the BE point to around 2.75 years it would double the number of successful farms without affecting compliance with existing regulations or green standards.

    "[...] ultimately the problem is that we expect as citizens and consumers the food to be cheaper than it's possible to produce, so that's the real issue." I disagree with that. Farming is extremely overregulated in the EU and farmers do not have much say in their own bussiness. Despite all this regulation for european farmers there is not that much regulation regarding the middleman prices and the final customer prices. Farmers are sometimes forced to sell to the middleman at a lower price than production costs but despite that the final cost to the consumer is around 20x the price the middleman paid. I would say that the real problem is that all this regulations seem to be elaborated AGAINST the farmers. The farmers, as much as any other trade, should receive a fair payment for their work/products. I cannot believe that it is due to "consumer perception" that a farmer is getting paid 0.11€/Kg of oranges and this oranges are sold in supermarkets at +2€/Kg. All that regulations for what? WTF😵‍💫

      Go look deeper buddy. The BBC are not telling you the whole story. Are you aware the Dutch government have bought out 750 farms in the Netherlands and shut the farms down. They plan to do this with 3,000 Dutch farms by 2030, in the name of nitrogen reduction. There is to much to explain here but they want to shut down farming. What happens when they do that?? We are the carbon they want to reduce.

    Farmers have been underpaid for sure, no doubt. Look at Turkish farmers. They are to be given, as per constitution, 1% of the budget every year, which they haven’t received in years. Their equipments have been repossessed by banks etc. Farmers, despite the fact that they are our literal source of sustenance, have been neglected, also by society. Look how fast ppl left farming in the last 100 years.

    There was a farmer that won the lottery, asked what he would do with the money he said "Guess I will keep farming until the money's all gone". Small Farmers do need to adapt and diversify their income streams, farming alone isn't enough. Add solar energy production to crop fields, some plants like strawberries produce higher yields with partial shade. Farmers in west Texas have added Shrimp & Fish farms, seafood can be grown in large tanks almost anyplace. Bioreactors are easy to build to grow algae as protein source for human & livestock consumption, algae uses photosynthesis to convert CO2 & water into oxygen and carbohydrates (which algae uses as food), some algae types produce fuel oil. If anything, politicians might just create the incentive for farmers to ADAPT, those that can't adapt will die off.

    Our EU regulations are important!! I respect farmers and i certainly would vouch for increased support in any financial way... but to ask to make regulations to be dropped is a big nope for me. Without regulations farmers would without a doubt use antibiotics in their livestock feed, continue to use pesticides and other chemicals with traces of heavy metals or even cut cornors in animal cruelty. We should respect the farmers aswell as the food we eat, and therefor another measure is required. I support any protest regarding income because they clearly deserve more but dont go around demanding regulations to be dropped! We have some of the healthiest foods in the world due to our strict regulations and they should pride emselves on this fact.

    • @Joppi1992
      @Joppi1992 3 месяца назад +1

      Regulating farming isn't just about the quality of pest prevention or treatment of livestock. A big part of it is also to regulate cash crops. Regulating cash crops means that a farm can't use all their fields to plant whatever is making the most money at the cost of the nation's ability to feed itself.
      And because EU is the EU, that burden of avoiding cash crops for the sake of feeding everyone in the EU, is spread out across all of EU. So one nation's farmers isn't just for feeding their own nation, it's to cover their share to feed all of EU.
      If a nation doesn't regulate cash crops properly, and farmers goes haywire and only plant cash crops and follows the trends that way in order to maximize profits, while the nation becomes unable to feed itself, it means while the farmers gets richer, the nation gets poorer because all of a sudden all the food would need to be imported which costs a lot more.
      There is also a potential damage to the earth if cash crops doesn't get regulated, but anyway, there are macroeconomical consequences which affects everyone if farmers are allowed to chase profits unregulated.

      Some regulations should exist but when farmers have to pay for that regulation, ie red tractor and don't get a premium like they used to.
      Red tractor asks them to declare how many tonnes they have for instance, why? That has nothing to do with food security. Also they have to have red tractor to trade their product even if it goes abroad.
      A few years ago, buy local was a thing but now they seem to want to buy from abroad with all the transport pollution etc, if that's a thing? Co2 makes plants grow!

    • @Joppi1992

      @@roberthiggins6401 It's a balancing act. A lot of regulation is needed for a lot of reasons when it comes to farming, but at the same time what's happening with the EU's crazy plan, is that it forces too many to pay too much out of their own pockets.
      No plan, not even when it's for that green goal in mind, will ever be accepted on this large of a scale, while forcing the costs of it on the citizens.
      This plan isn't just going to hurt the farmers. It's going to hurt practically everybody in a significant financial manner.
      This is on a much grander scale than just farming, and it'll hurt way more people than just the farmers. The farmers are just the first to cry about it, but more tears will join them soon from the rest of the EU.

The price tag of more than 6 million dollars that comes with a bottle of this whiskey is because of the decanter that contains it. It features 8,500 diamonds, 300 rubies and exquisite white gold. Talking about the whiskey, it is one of the finest ever and is the epitome of luxury scotch whiskey.
