  • There's a new trailer for the upcoming live action remake of Disney's The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, and it actually looks pretty decent..? In this video i take a look at the new trailer, as well as the brand new poster, and I give you my initial thoughts and impressions.

      It's even hinted that The Little mermaid has a exotic setting. It's not even a kingdom far away, it could be indeed Italy, as this was Hand Christian Andersen's favorite country (same like Goethe's (; ), and we have such exotic vibes, like lemon trees, marble statues, so this is indeed not Denmark, but rather such a "warm" country; also the Disney movie is also inspired by Italy (or another similar country), if you take a close look. A lot of classic plays by Shakespeare are set in Italy or Ancient Greece, as well also even Danish ballets in 19th century (such like "Napoli") (;

    I also agree that The Little Mermaid could be the best Disney remake, because its as colorful as the original, keeps the songs and could even improve the movie with some additions. Because I watched Disney movies in Danish and I have to say… the voices of the 1990s are MUCH BETTER than the ones since “Frozen”. I mean, did you hear Anna and Elsa’s voices in that version? It’s day and night. Danish Elsa is super awesome and the Danish Anna sounds like a parody. So Disney Denmark, can you bring back a Sissel Kyrkjebø type of voice, please? Because I want that be the most awesome as possible and bring nostalgia to people who are going to watch it.

    • @usonohoshi6165
      @usonohoshi6165 Год назад

      Sadly, it's not that hard to find a reason though. The two sides are going at it pretty evenly.
      Instead of Disney and the cast saying "we did our best", "trust the process", or "you'll like this version just as much as the original". Staying positive CLEARLY does help.
      But NOPE! You have Disney actors calling the haters "Pathetic" in live interviews. With the media being like a bully's lackey giving the "Yeah! you showed them" kind of attitude.
      Although I can understand. The hate comments are pretty mean. But going down to their level does NOT help the situation.(it NEVER had)
      Many creators go through this shit, and yet they kept their composure. Stayed PROFESSIONAL.
      Even Hailey herself kind of made it worse... (I'm honestly disappointed of her for a bit)
      She even says in an interview that it will be BETTER than the original JUST because "progression" of Ariel leaving the sea for a man.
      Which... If she was a fan of the original... She'd at least know the difference between the Book- which IS about a mermaid leaving the sea for a man who could NEVER loved her. Author even mentions how she was treated more like a pet, than a person by the prince.
      To the animated film where her love for Eric was an EXTENSION- A BONUS of her love for the land.
      She fell for him because she saw him as the embodiment of what she loves about a world she has mostly only heard about, but want to experience.
      The tour of the kingdom shows this VERY well. As ALL of her attention is just looking around and experiencing things. Dragging Eric around not really doing ANY romantic advances.
      It was the animals that were desperate for them to kiss. Not her.
      And him falling for her because of how much she is just LOVING everything around her. The liveliness and happiness she radiates rubbing off on him.
      That's what made their relationship so great.
      And for Hailey to talk down about their relationship, while also making a pretty obvious mix up with the plot.
      I... can't blame people for getting upset.

    H.C. Andersen wrote that the fairy tale takes place in the southern sea and the king, with whom the little mermaid falls in love, is the ruler of a nearby kingdom. Andersen didn't exactly define where it is, but it limits out at least all kingdoms from the northern hemisphere. H.C. Andersen's fairy tale also differs in many other ways, for example the undersea kingdom is ruled by the little mermaid's grandmother, the statue is made entirely of glass, the mermaid has no soul and there are no real villain in the story. For example, the sea witch is a neutral character in H.C. Andersen's story, who first questions the mermaid's will to exchange her tail for legs and warns that every step would feel like walking on sharp thorns and broken glass. But since the king doesn't love the mermaid but someone else, the little mermaid's sisters ask her to kill the king to get her tail back, which the little mermaid can't do and dies.
    But I still find the idea that Disney's Prince Erik would be a white colonialist ruler in some colonial kingdom who has taken the lands away from the local natives still disturbing.

    The 1989 Little Mermaid seems to be set somewhere in the Mediterranean to me. The landscape and the architecture of Eric’s kingdom makes me think of Corsica, Southern France or Croatia.
    The live action gives the impression that they changed the location to 18th-19th century Caribbean, which I think it suits it better since Ariel is now being cast by an Afroamerican actress.

    It's promising. But I saw the leaks for part of your world.
    Most of it is good. The changes were expected. But they cut one MAJOR shot with a pretty bad edit. And that was when Ariel was slowly sinking down from the top of the grotto to the ocean floor.
    In the animated film the camera zooms out. As if to show us how even she understands how impossible her wish is. How it was out of her reach. And this grotto is the best she can do.
    Even now, that moment gets me to tear up. You can really feel Ariel's hopelessness. Before the fireworks some to give her hope again.
    But in the live action they just cut straight to her already seated in the floor. And the remake just lost a lot of emotional impact on it.
    It's something I feel they can't fix. But I hope they somehow do. And also hope they didn't remove any other great shots like it in other parts.
    Especially when the music is so good.

      Well, then also Cinderella would be inappropriate as there is already the version with Brandy. It's here about fairy tales, not about historical characters. • @chrismanahan1533
      @chrismanahan1533 Год назад

      @@felicity1877 I think the thing with Brandy's Cinderella, it was based from Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, and not really from the Disney's animated Cinderella, so in a way, it is less mainstream. Tiana or Naveen are not historical figures, but still, I doubt, a white adult or a white kid can easily dress up as them without ruffling some feathers. So I agree, it shouldn't be one-sided.

    • @nubiannile4606

      It’s not one sided. White actors/actresses play Asian, Native Americans and other indigenous people and yes even Black people. And people can wear anything they want, but Tiana unlike fictional sea creature Ariel is based on a real life human Black woman living in 1920’s pre civil rights era America.

    • @felicity1877
      @felicity1877 Год назад

      @@nubiannile4606 Actually, the thing with Tiana as argument is more complicated, as Ariel is also based on the The Little Mermaid, and she is clearly described in Andersen's tale as white, and she is inspired by a white actress, Alyssa Milano. Theoretically, also Tiana as character would work as a white person (I know it's New Orleans with a stronger black population, but still also with white, of course). But it's right to say that Tiana was created as a black girl because Disney wanted to introduce a black princess, and so she should be kept also as black in her live action adaption. Ariel was created as a modern, young and lively character for a young modern audience (and she doesn't have a clear nationality, - I hate when the word "race" is used in this context), and so Halle Bailey can be of course also Ariel. The animated characters are anyway so unique that they would never be fully embodied by their live action counterparts (so one could always spot differences, I guess).
      You're right that there are also such examples of the other sided race bending, as this had been rather in the past (when there had been less such diverse actors/actresses around anyway - because it had been also much more about celebrities than proper "representation"), and it's still happening, yet, I would rather say that's happening with less established characters (at least, I wouldn't recall now a famous example) and it's not connected with such marketing as within Disney.

    Couldn’t disagree more. To me, as a die hard TLM fan, this appears to be the WORST live action ever made. For starters, they’re changing the love story line, not making Eric as much of a focus for her as he originally was. Secondly, the sidekick animal characters look and sound AWFUL. The movie looks very dark/dreary. Ariel’s hair is her trademark, and HB’s hair is lackluster brownish red (terrible). Triton is miscast. And the worst part is while HB has a nice voice, she is a flat actress. She barely has ANY facial expressions at all. This extended trailer proved my worst fears: a bad, inexperienced actress will take on one of the most iconic princesses of all time. Epic fail.
