Uh, the Gretsch guitars built in Japan at the Terada plant are pretty much universally praised by Gretsch players. Gretsch was seriously slipping under Baldwin's care and the sale back to the Gretsch family, and the move of production to Japan saved the brand.
Yep - I remember looking at a green 6118 with the harp tailpiece in 1964 - it was horrible to play and made in such a slipshod way - not surprised in the end that USA manufacture finished. I was buying but bought an early Rickenbacker 1997 - the first year of production. The current Gretsch's are flawless.
The new gretches made in Japan are way better than anything they ever made in the United States back in the day. Haven't had any of their new USA custom stuff in my hands though but I imagine those are pretty nice too.
Lee saying the new japanese ones don't have as much "heritage". I'd rather my guitar intonated better, stayed in tune better, and felt more comfortable to play, instead of some arbitrary feeling of "heritage"
I think nowdays you spend your money on what inspires you to play better, to write the best music you can, thats the point if investing lots on money on a guitar, if not we would all just buy an inexpensive guitar like a schecter or a squier idk, the notes all are the same, but the feel, the mojo...its like woman, they all have boobs ans vagina, some of them have ass, most of them are beautiful, but not all of them make you feel that spark that makes you be a better man, in this case a better guitar player.
I had an Epiphone Scroll SC-450 1970's Japanese guitar. Worst looking but best sounding / playing guitar I've ever had. Even better than my 1972 Gretsch :S
I love my Japanese Gretsch 6120 - it's the real deal. Brian Setzer seems happy with his signature line (he actually plays them), all made in Japan, too. The new Player's Edition is a great line, too. All the retro sound and feel but with better upper fret access, locking tuners, pinned bridge, treble bleed, no-load tone pots, string-thru Bigsby - what's not to like? If I wasn't already flush with guitars, I'd probably get a hollowbody and a Jet player's edition with the Bigsby and Filter'trons. The hard tail ones are more rock machine, but still very cool. Thanks for the demo.
Per Wikipedia, Friedrich Gretsch died in 1895, but there are several generations of "Fred Gretsch". Fred W. Gretsch did a deal with Fender in 2002, and retained ownership whilst FMIC handles "most of the development, distribution, and sales". Thanks as always for a fun video
Has Lee EVER done a Gretsch review without pointing out that he doesn't like the volume knob setup, lol? Personally, I love having that master volume control. Thanks for all the fun reviews!
@@DavidMorissetJapanese Gretschs are not the same universe as "import" Gretschs, and that's saying something because even Chinese Jets are not bad guitars at all and get gigged all the time. Resale on Gretschs are hurt by people that don't know what they are or how to play them. Anyone can play an SG or LP. Current prices for Ginson are ridiculous. I've sent back 3 in the last three years, I've never had to return a Japanese Gretsch and I have 4 of them.
I own one the electromatic series jet guitars and I can honestly say it's awesome. I gig with it regularly and I love it. Stays in tune, pickups are awesome. A little darker than other guitars which works for me. High;y recommended. I paid 800 dollars canadian for mine. worth every penny.
The thing I really like about the new Electromatic Jets is that they now have mahogany bodies when they used to be basswood. I bought my goldtop a couple of years too soon.
I bought a Gibson "The Paul" in the '70s, which has paid its dues many times over and I'll never willingly part with. That said - and I hate to say it - if it was a choice between pretty much guaranteed quality on the Japanese Gretsch against almost playing Russian roulette on a modern Gibson - I'd opt for the Gretsch every time. I wish Lee and Rob had devoted more time to the cheaper non-Japanese option, because there's probably a huge potential market for these - and I'd seriously consider one as an extra option for recording with.
Had the honor of playing a Gretsch at Sam Ash a few days ago. Finally got to feel one, and they feel like one of the most genuine and comfortable guitars I've ever played! They definitely look cool and sound cool!
I ordered this players edition duo jet last Saturday and got it in. I love my cadillac green jet. I love my Japanese Gretsch. Out of the box just tuned the strings played great no setup like you do a Gibson fresh out the box
Paolo Paqueo, I have one too. Question for you. The only issue i have is that i can make it buzz more than any guitar i have. Maybe because it came with very low action. Wich is not a bad thing. I just need my action set a little higher. Curios what your experience is with that.
Eddie Chavez mine doesn’t buzz at all, and it stays in tune so well even after some hard bending. Sounds like your instinct of changing the action is the correct one.
From the experience of owning a couple vintage Gretsch and a couple modern ones I must say.....The Japanese one are much better quality wise. With the factory's in japan that produce these, you can really tell these builders/luthiers absolutely love making the best instrument they can, every little detail is taken care of. And you can see the respect for the brand reflected in the final product. I'm not knocking any American made vintage Gretsch, I've owned a Falcon and a Rally. I used the Rally in a music video (on our channel) but you can tell even for being American made there were corners cut and they weren't build to last so much as something like an old 335 or strat. BUT THATS OK!! Still love both!
The difference between this two G6228 is the FM has ebony fingerboard and the solid is rosewood, they sound different, not only the finish. I prefer ebony!
Have you compared them side by side? Did you hear a big difference with the ebony? Maybe it's the amp, but in the video, the rosewood actually sounded brighter.
was this what Pete was playing on the tail-end of the Gretsch NAMM 2018 video? Because I remember watching that and thinking "DAMN.. that's better than a Les Paul"
I came from the Gretsch Instagram where they post a pic with brad whitford holding this guitar. Definitely aerosmith tones coming out of these guitars.
nice look'n fiddles...gretsch always makes good fiddles....it hurts when you cant afford to collect all the cool guitars and pedals at the same time, but when i get past my mlv iris - yes the gretsch is well in my favorite wish list -orange hollow body ring a bell !!!!!!-lol

I know they came out awhile ago, but I'd love to see you guys do a video on the Vintage Select DUO JET series. I know you've done videos on a lot of the hollow bodies but I haven't seen any on the Duo Jet series that came out a year or 2 ago. Rabea almost grabbed one during the Sounds Like Queens of the Stone Age but then went with a different guitar :(. I personally own the 53 VIntage Select Duo Jet with D'Armond pickups and I love it!

After playing Gibson Les Paul Standards, Custom Shop LPs, and Classics, plus both Charvel and Jackson customs, and Fender Select Strats, (in other words, I've played some really great guitars) I've just purchased one of these in the dark cherry metallic. Definitely curious to hear these pickups with the chambered body. I still have a lot of Gibson Les Pauls, Charvels and a custom Jackson Rhoads, I think this will sonically fill a hole I've been wanting to close up. I almost bought the Malcolm Young signature Gretsch, but I just couldn't do it. As much as I love Mal and his dynamic rhythm playing, I don't like buying signature guitars. Really, for my skill level, I should be playing a Fender Squier, lol. We'll see how she sounds!
I love your videos! Last year I bought a LP traditional from you, the price was very good and the description/photos made me choose that specific guitar. I just wish it could be always like that, in order to compete with Thomann/Musicstore! This time I had to buy this guitar elsewhere... just because 180€ are big of a difference for me. I feel kind of sad, because your video made me want this guitar... (feel free to delete the comment after reading, I just wanted to share the info with you. And keep on the good work).
Just saw you on Tone-Talk - major fan of this channel! HUGE REQUEST: Please put a Friedman BE-50 Deluxe in your recording studio to play through regularly and demo gear? The amp is a masterpiece. If Rob hasn't played one yet, capturing his first play/reaction would be worth publishing alone :)
The old Gretsch guitars that I have played had no issues with intonation or tuning. But as they aged, they started to fall apart. They had construction issues. Bindings would pop, necks would need to be reset, major problems arose with age, but when they were holding together, they were great. BUT, they really weren't built for hard rock, higher gain stuff. They were built for cleaner tones, and cleanish tones mostly. Not saying you can't use them that way, but not the intent for sure. And as a result, I still think of them as being "better for cleans". But thats an emotional reaction more than anything else. And when production moved to Japan, the construction quality probably improved considerable. My only complaint is that they charged American prices for guitars made in Japan. That's just gouging. Even high end guitars made in Japan should top out at $1k-1.5k, not $3k-5k like the high end Gretschs. These are more affordable of course, so that complaint is more a general comment. But I still doubt I would buy one. I didn't think they sounded like a Les Paul, nor would I want a Gretsch copy of a Les Paul. And they didn't sound like traditional Gretschs either (might have been your demo's fault there). I'd rather have heard them in a cleaner setting to see if they fit that bill.
Japanese guitars better than American guitars? ABSOLUTELY! America lost the recipe on guitar manufacturing excellence in sometime in the late 70's early 80's. Cost reduction and bean counting became more important than craftsmanship.

He's not saying "heritage is better", he's saying some people want that thing about it.
Matt Umanov, looooong time guitar dealer and repair guy in NYC, swears by the Japanese made Gretsch guitars. Told me they are second to none.
The last time I was this early Lee was still building synthesizers

Gretsch and Fender are my go to guitar brands.
Really starting to think gretsch is becoming the new players choice over Gibson, classic sound, great build but good prices.
Zelicanth nope Gibson’s rule so long as they continue to be made in the USA
Its £1900 ! I think thats about 1k too much. For that price Id just buy a Gibson tbh.

I have a Pro Jet that I upgraded with HS Filtertrons and a treble bleed and it friggin' sings.
I may get burned at the stake for this, but a Gretsch like this is nicer than any Gibson Les Paul
Id rather have a jet over an lp any day too
I love watching this videos when i pause with a coffee from guitar practice. Greetings from Holland.
Wow this is the first time I've ever liked the look of a red guitar over other color choices (besides obviously an sg)
I was playing that very Electromatic gold top yesterday! Nearly bought it. Got to meet Captain Lee and Danish Pete as well :)
Jeez Captain .... You're becoming a VERY nice player! :)
those Justin Guitar lessons paying off
I have a black one. It's a beautiful guitar, perfect in every way. This is a guitar you buy and can't put it down.

The captain was playing brilliantly there,I really like his style and approach with his leads.
That metal head Chapman misses the whole point of the Gretsch sound. He thinks he’s playing an ESP through a Crate amp and a Boss OD.
Robs playing is a bit limited....not like Rabeas or Petes playing abilities.
I do love me a nice grestch they're a must have for any guitar collection in my opinion

Exactly! Just the look is exotic indeed!
OH MAN that opening jam was totally righteous Lee. Your playing is progressing fabulously. Keep rocking us man!! 🤘🏻
Ohh man I love the editing when Lee makes this awsome lick in the end there (around 17.00min) 😂
Why do Andertons always demo guitars though distortion pedals? I want to know what the guitars sound like, not the bleedin' pedals!
I agree 100%
I love that fuzzy sound on the double stops
Rob's tone sounds better than normal on these. Really balances out nicely.
Lee's playing is just getting better and better.

I'd love to see Pete and Rebea demo the high-end jets. These player series guitars are criminally underrated.
2 grand ain’t bad, same price as FGN’s and we all know some of the best stuff out there’s coming from Japan.

You smashed the intro jam! Excellent blues playing.
For all the slack they give him, this jam is something they can't jank on. What a jam

Ah and now rob just said the same thing lol
Not a fan of all the OD, distoration or fuzz. Never demo'ed a clean sound. I'm still in a quandary as to what this guitar really sounds like.
Lee - you are shredding these days! Awesome playing man
I own one and there is something about that guitar does not complement with high gains. But on a clean amp amazing
Thought I was gonna hear some rockabilly for a change. Nope, just the usual blues jamming.
Love that gold one, even though it's only £432.
I have a Gretsch 6186 Clipper made in 1960. Definitely a lot of heritage. Don't think you are gonna go gigging with it though.
Please review that duesenberg thats hang up on the wall behind rob at 8:03

These two have zero musical chemistry. Anytime Lee plays with someone else, it’s pure magic. Chappers is a one trick pony. Barely.
Especially on vintage style gear. Very few shredders are gonna look at a Gretsch.
So, Lee, if you had a Les Paul and a G6228 what would you use each for; where would be the playing differences; where would they cross over?
He'd be trying to jump away from his ass too. 😆🤣👍
I'd change that matter volume to a cap bleed with a boost blend
Cap has such an orange-y tone dialed in on that vic and I L O V E it
