As a young man Owens battled suicidal thoughts as he came to terms with his own sexuality. He commented in a interview once that despite all the great games and world cup finals etc that he has experienced , that the best moment of his life was when a mother of a gay teen who was having similar dark thoughts, told him that by his example he had saved her sons life. That's the caliber of the man.

great to hear the Welsh language commentary when Nigel brings the red card in jest to the ball-boy (2'58"). Nigel also speaks Welsh. The commentator says, "'dyw e ddim yn colli cyfle, 'dyw e ddim yn colli cyfle, ond 'dyw e!" (he doesn't miss an opportunity, he doesn't miss an opportunity, does he). • @mervinmannas7671

Nigel was one of the best if not THE best. He was fair but firm and commanded respect from every side of the game. A few years back he was persuaded to do a documentry about his mental health issues and his attempted suicide. He was in a very dark place because of being gay. When he decided to throw caution to the wind and come out, the out pouring of love and support for this man was unreal. The players had even more respect for him. The Rugby Association of Wales and the referees association backed him 100%. He himself was crying in the programme when he was saying how overwhelmed he was at how the whole rugby community gave him a huge hug and and said we dont give a s--- what you are your ours.

Reason he kept saying stuff like "the soccer pitch is down the road" is because the players have little respect for the ref and it is the tradition that rugby players show respect for the ref and the fact that rugby is for tough players not "play actors" as you must have seen soccer players go down as if a sniper had hit them when there was not even contact.

He retired last year after refereeing around 100 international games and countless club games. He was and is incredibly good, but many top-level referees come close, and all referees aspire to that kind of approach. Note that in Rugby Union, only the captain of each team may speak to referee unless the referee speaks first, and the referees orders are there to be obeyed. Rugby is CONTROLLED violence, high energy, high speed chess with pieces moving at 35kph , each with a mass of around 130 kg, with little or no protection worn. The rules HAVE to be followed, and discipline must be maintained. Referees have to use their power well and with due discretion.

He's a gay, I believe single man, but I was just imagining how he would be with a son and daughter, for example....."Put your phones away at the dinner table, if the dining table was the place for social media and computer games I'd have served you a plate of motherboards, a side of computer chips and a few tiny screws but its not so leave your phones in your bedrooms and sit down and eat or dinner", or "I won't have you playing football in my house, if you want to play that game the field is 100 yards from here", or "If you don't clean up your room by tomorrow I'm issuing you with a yellow card, if you talk back to me I'm issuing you with a red card and you can sleep in the dog kennel and I'll give your room to the dog". etc. etc. LOL

I still reckon you should watch Ronnie Barker stuttering sketches from open all hours.
You want a new comedy series to watch after the inbetweeners try some mothers do ave them.

Watch more rugby matches - referees are the bosses on the field, and unlike in football (soccer) where all the players swarm the referee - they will NOT tolerate that kind of behaviour, only the captain of a rugby team can discuss things with the ref to a certain point, but everytime a player shows dissent or unsportsmanlike behaviour a referee will overturn penalty decisions or march a team back 10 metres up the field.
It is quite possible that a referee could march a team if they dissent or protest too much - all the way back to their goal line.

You might find this video interesting. Maybe a bit long to do a reaction to but explains what made him the man he is...
