    Who could imagine that a 8-bit computer system could ALSO have a Laser Disc technology!? This is something I haven't seen or known before here at all... And it's AMAZING. Is the MSX the very first system to have the possibility of having Laser Disc? What a discovery!!!

      I made a detailed post but YT seems to have deleted it.
      The first LD game was Rollercoaster for the Apple 2, developed in 1977 and commercially released in 1979.
      The first arcade LD game was Quarter Horse in 1982. I posted reference links and I don't think YT liked that.

      I didn't see it come up, so I am guessing it was blocked due to the links. I am definitely going to investigate this subject more though and a make a dedicated documentary style video on Laser Disc add-ons.

      @@hicknopunk It shouldn't block the links because I put links in comments all the time and never have any issues. If the link is considered unsafe, maybe it will block it?

      @JustWasted3HoursHere Год назад +1

      It's basically using a genlock to overlay simple graphics on top of the laser disc's video. Controlling the LD access is pretty simple and doesn't require a lot of processing power. In fact, I dare say that a LD game is less taxing on a system than one where its own processor and graphics chip has to do all the work. Still pretty cool though.

    After Cinematronics came out with Dragon's Lair, which took 3 million dollars and 7 months to develop, other game developers were in a rush to come out with their own stuff, no matter what it was. Much of what was produced was just recycled anime or movie clips with some overlaid graphics and pretty much all of it fell far short of what Dragon's Lair (and Space Ace) had achieved. That's one of the main reasons laser disc games soon disappeared.

    8 bit Full Motion Video. The FMV revolution didn't last very long, it not being that much fun basically, but here it is on what in the UK is a very niche computer...
    And we'd associate it with the CD based consoles.CDTV, CD32, PlayStation, CDi, Mega CD, 3DO...

    I thought for a minute that the MSX somehow got MegaRace. Then I checked the release date, which showed that MegaRace wasn't even released until 1993. Instead I was looking at Cosmos Circuit from 1985.

      @@TheLairdsLair Thanks for the reply. Two questions;
      Is Murder Anyone? really an MSX game? I ask because when I search for it, I see people on the net saying that it can be played in normal laserdisc players, and speculating whether the MSX actually adds anything to it, or whether it's just acting as a player.
      Is About Houses and Homes just a promotional video? I first thought it was another disc, but then I was thinking it was probably just a video.

    It’s really weird that we got so hung up on FMV games in the ‘90s. We’d had (actually good looking!) FMV for a decade and already explored its limitations.

      @@TheLairdsLair Interesting i just looked it up. it appears to be a text adventure from 1981 based on the 1977 move roller-coaster.
      It seems to require 2 screens one for the text and one for the video footage. it plays just like a normal text adventure. but when you do something it will play some relevant footage on the screen. and then you get a still picture of your location.
      the game seems to be made in basic. and maybe its just the emulation. but it crashed on me when i typed certain things.

      @@TheLairdsLair you should title them in a way so people know they are footage only. I like to hear about the game as I watch, what it's like, intro about the system etc so just click off when it's footage only, which will severely hurt you on the algorithm if a lot of people do it. If I knew it didn't have any commentary I wouldn't click at all. Can't think of the channel but there's a big one that does full libraries and talks you through it and it's great - you're a different style and I love your channel so just think it's worth thinking about titling them as 'footage only' or something so it doesn't hurt growth 📈 I know I've clicked straight off several of your videos after being disappointed it's only footage and I feel bad when I do 😊 four play hurts my brain as it's all four audios and is just watching footage of them leaving people with no idea how they play or what the differences are or which is best. I would assume the % who watch the whole video on those is truly awful. Which is sad as your own content is amazing.

      @@TheLairdsLair thanks for the recommendation, I will watch. I'd never heard of the system like many here so was really excited to learn more (every comment saying they hadn't heard of it is the same I would wager) and then disappointed there was no commentary. Sorry if my original comment was rude.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  3 месяца назад +1

      It's actually the complete opposite, my watch retention is WAY above the RUclips average, I spend ages pouring over the RUclips analytics. My titles don't say "Let's Play" or "Playthrough" which what you usually find with reviews and videos that have commentary, so I don't think they are misleading in any way and the stats back that up. The video descriptions are also very accurate and tell you exactly what the video is. I am not going to start making my titles even longer and a lot less snappy by putting "footage only" on the end, that just seems silly. And in Four Play the audio doesn't all play at once, not sure why you think that, and the pinned post in the comments tell you my views of the game in question for those who want to know - but as I previously told you the whole point of those videos is that the viewer decides which version is by watching them play and then votes in the poll without any direction or bias (which commentary would do).
