I was a big fan of Patti and Michael, so you can imagine how excited I was when I heard they were doing a duet. I worked at a music called Turtle's Records and recall opening a shipment box and seeing the 45. After listening to it for around the tenth time, I knew they had a number one hit. Ok a 45/record is telling you I'm old school.........lol. Anyhow, great reaction video!!!!!!!!

You would never know that they were never in the same studio or even the same city while recording this masterpiece. Even the video is shot in different locations, that’s why it’s split screen. I can only recall them actually singing it live only once for a TV performance. You may also like her song “You Are My Friend “. Personally, I prefer the studio recording as opposed to the live versions.

A very beautiful reaction💎 💎! On My Own was released as the lead single from Patti LaBelle's 1986 album: Winner In You. It was written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart, #1 on the Cash Box 100, #1 on the Dance Singles Sales chart, #1 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The music video was directed by Mick Haggerty. The singers recorded their music and music video parts separately. Patti LaBelle filmed the video in New York and recorded her part in Philadelphia. Michael McDonald did both in LA. The video used a split screen effect to show them each on their own. Yes, their voices go perfect together...to produce a very soothing melodic sound.
Lyrically, the song: "On My Own", was based on a relationship that had reached its end with both parties going their separate ways in a melancholy state with the occasional option of coming back together again one day.
The song was initially not intended to be a duet at all, but Patti LaBelle decided to invite Michael McDonald to help her turn the song into a duet, as she stated: "The song was sent to me and I did a version of it but somehow it just didn't quite work. We were going over things I'd done and we talked about turning it into a duet. Someone asked, 'If you could do it with anyone, who would you sing it with?', and Michael was my first choice".
Patti LaBelle told NME in 1986: "The success of 'On My Own' came as a shock. I don't record for commercial value. With 'On My Own' I went into the Studio thinking, I'm gonna record something I love. Usually if I love it, it bubbles under. And I was surprised it made a hit".
Fun Fact 🕵🏾‍♀: The song was originally recorded by singer Dionne Warwick for inclusion on her album: Friends (1985), but was left off of the album's final production for release.

Michael McDonald became a member of Steely Dan's touring band in 1973, singing lead and backing vocals. As he recalled in a 2016 interview:
I literally threw my piano in the back of my Pinto and drove down to where they were rehearsing and auditioned. Remarkably I got the gig, not because of my keyboard playing but because I could sing all the high parts. I could tell that appealed to Donald Fagen-'cause I could sing like a girl.
Michael McDonald became one of the many in-studio adjunct members of the band, providing backing vocals on tracks for the 1975 song: Katy Lied. He appeared on subsequent Steely Dan recordings, including: The Royal Scam (1976) and Aja (1977). He also played keyboards on some Steely Dan tracks.
Michael McDonald continued to provide backing vocals for Steely Dan through their 1980 album release: Gaucho. In 2006, he joined Steely Dan on the band's summer tour, both as the opening act and as part of the band.
    The Doobie Brothers 👨‍🎤🎸🎷🎺🥁🪘:
Michael McDonald was recruited by The Doobie Brothers in April 1975, initially as a temporary replacement for their lead vocalist Tom Johnston after he became ill during a national tour. Michael McDonald's work with the band proved so successful that they decided to retain him as a full-time member.
As a member of The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald sang lead vocals on some of the band's best-known songs including: "Real Love", "Takin' It To The Streets", "Little Darling (I Need You)", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Minute By Minute" and "What A Fool Believes" which became a number-one single in the U.S. and earned him a 1980 Grammy Award for Song of the Year along with co-writer Kenny Loggins.
At the same time, Michael McDonald appeared as a session vocalist and keyboardist for various artists, including: Christopher Cross, Stephen Bishop, Jack Jones, Bonnie Raitt, Toto and Kenny Loggins. Michael McDonald has reunited as a guest performer with The Doobie Brothers several times since the band's initial dissolution in 1982. He reteamed with them for the track: "Don't Say Goodbye", on the band's thirteenth studio album: World Gone Crazy (2010). In March 2014, he reunited with the band to record a new album featuring the greatest hits of their 40-plus-year career. This project was completed in conjunction with Sony Music Nashville. On the album, Michael McDonald shares lead vocals with Sara Evans for the song: "What A Fool Believes", the singing duo "Love And Theft" for the song: "Takin' It To The Streets", and Amanda Sudano-Ramirez for the song: "You Belong To Me." Solo Career 👨‍🎤:

The album featured the hit singles: "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" and "I Gotta Try", the latter co-written with Kenny Loggins, who also recorded it that same year for his fourth album High Adventure.
He continued to collaborate with other artists during this period. Michael McDonald co-wrote Van Halen's top-20 hit song; "I'll Wait", from their biggest-selling album 1984. "Yah Mo B There", a duet with James Ingram, won the 27th Annual Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
In 1985, he released his second studio album: No Lookin' Back, his first time co-producing an album. He also wrote or co-wrote all of the tracks and featured a minor hit with the title track, cowritten by Kenny Loggins. By June 1986, the album had met with little success, but Michael McDonald then had a huge boost with the release of the single: "Sweet Freedom", which appeared on the soundtrack to the Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines 1986 film: Running Scared, and was Michael McDonald's last top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The No Lookin' Back album was then re-released in some markets with the new hit single included, as well as with a few songs remixed. The single: "On My Own", a duet with Patti LaBelle, reached number one on the U.S. charts in 1986. In 1991, he released the popular single: "Ever Changing Times" (#19 R&B), a duet with the legendary Soul singer Aretha Franklin.
In 1999, Michael McDonald recorded the song: "Eyes Of A Child", a comedic ballad written by Trey Parker, for the film: South Park Bigger, Longer & Uncut, movie soundtrack. It was also used at the ending credits for the movie. Members of Patti LaBelle's immediate family have passed away at young ages. Her mother Bertha passed away in October 1978 from diabetes at the age of 62. Her father, Henry Holte Jr, passed away of complications from emphysema and Alzheimer's disease in October 1989 at the age of 70. All three of LaBelle's sisters passed away young. A day after the singer buried Jacqueline Padgett, an emotionally-wrecked Patti LaBelle shot the music video to her song: "If You Asked Me To", where she was seen crying in various shots; the video was shot on what would've been Jacqueline Padgett's 44th birthday. Easily the best blend of two very strong voices. Aretha and George Michael's "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" is also something you should give a listen to if you like duets with different sounds.
