Part 1.1 Violin Hold, Chin Rest, Shoulder Rest - Learning Violin From Youtube? (English Subtitles)

- This is the 1.1. part of a video series in which I want to find out how a violin beginner learns playing violin by herself using RUclips tutorials, how she reacts to such tutorials and what possible consequences are. Afterwards I give the student a lesson and Regina will always share her own experiences.
There is no claim to completeness of the topics discussed. The contents of the videos discuss a beginner lesson in which I try to convey certain principles and basics.
Video chapters:
0:00 introduction
1:21 START RUclips tutorial
1:54 trying without shoulder rest
2:58 putting shoulder rest on and adjusting
6:07 violin hold
6:57 How is it to start like this?
7:30 relaxed?
9:29 height of shoulder rest and chin rest
11:06 START personal lesson
11:37 short stance exercise
12:27 positioning the violin
13:30 supination of the left hand according to violin position
16:51 middle mounted chin rest
17:47 adjusting the shoulder rest
Notes:
N1 (3:14): I deliberately chose a video for my student in which the exact adjusting of the shoulder rest is not shown. I am aware that there are resources on it on the internet and on RUclips, but I noticed that many videos that show the first steps on the violin are brief on this topic (for the whole series I tried to find videos with many views and a big audience). I think that it is likely that beginners without experience do not invest much time in this topic since on the one hand it is not always discussed as a very crucial topic, but on the other hand the student might never make the experience over RUclips of how the instrument is supposed to feel when properly adjusted. I also speak from experience when I say, that many students that had other teachers prior to my lessons played on a badly ergonomically set up violin, maybe because the teacher didn't have their focus on the matter. Since the student doesn't know a better feeling the setup will possibly not be changed which can lead to tension over the years. A good setup with shoulder rest and chin rest is one of the most essential things for a healthy and free way of playing.
N2 (4:15): It is important how the shoulder rest is applied since every time I put on the shoulder rest in a different way the contact to the body and the position of the violin changes. This can be a problem when I am not aware of this since it also changes the position of the left hand and the path of the bow.
N3 (11:32): The stance and the setup of chin rest and shoulder rest belong together because the stance will change the feeling in the upper body and the contact to the instrument. This is why at first I do a basic stance exercise. It is important to know that posture and stance comes prior to the setting up of the violin. If not it can be a frustrating topic when the posture of the student changes frequently.

Mario
