  • The Sixty Marches charter, Part 6:
    Cab view from Hereford down the Welsh Marches Line to Newport (Maindee East Junction). Filmed from Hastings Diesels Limited’s preserved Hastings DEMU on Saturday 24 March 2018, during the return leg of The Sixty Marches private charter.
    .
    In this video we travel 43 miles and 79 chains in 49 minutes across Herefordshire and Monmouthshire, crossing and re-crossing the Wales/England border and skimming the edge of the Brecon Beacons. We follow the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford railway over the summit of a steep climb at Llanvihangel, through Abergavenny on the way down the other side, and onward as far as Pontypool. From there the line becomes the Pontypool, Caerleon & Newport Railway which was built to act as a ‘bypass’ for the busy Monmouthshire Railway south of Pontypool, which the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford Railway had originally been obliged to share. In the Pontypool area we pass a vast area which used to be heavily industrialised and served by many railway lines... all of them gone except for the one we are on, passing abandoned industry, overgrown railway sidings and a suspiciously new-looking housing estate. Ultimately we curve round the Caerleon district and cross the tidal River Usk to approach Newport and the South Wales Main Line, onto which we turn at Maindee East Junction.
    .
    This outing began at Hastings and ran via Tonbridge, Redhill and Guildford to Reading; then from Reading via Hungerford (part 1) to the Westbury area (part 2) where we turned right at Heywood Road Junction, through Bradford-on-Avon and Bath to Filton (part 3), through the Severn Tunnel into Wales, to Maindee Junction (Newport) (part 4) for the line through Abergavenny to Hereford (part 5); the return journey from Hereford to Newport (this part) continued via the Severn Tunnel and Bath (next part), retracing the same route.
    .
    Video footage is from an unattended unmonitored forward-facing cab-camera in motor coach 60118 Tunbridge Wells.

    Our return journey’s route was changed just a day or two before the trip because of a bridge strike - from Hereford to Filton Abbey Wood we were supposed to have been routed via Worcester and the Gloucester area to Yate and Bristol Parkway, but as things turned out we had to retrace our steps via the Severn Tunnel. The following shows our original route.

    This stretch of line is like the original railway. No electrification of any kind and complete with semaphore signalling, in places.It seems a lot of stations were closed before the infamous Beeching axe. Always enjoy the videos, very informative, and I think the map overlay was a great idea.

    Yes, we are continuing our route towards Bath in the next segment. I expected this. Hopefully we will end up back where we had started in the first place, that is Reading. These user worked crossings (UWC) seem to be controlled manually and are not automatically opened or shut.

    Hereford to M4 overbridge (42m 1ch) in 43m 4s. That's a start-to-pass avge speed of 58.53 mph. Pretty good for a veteran.
    I noticed from the outward journey that you traversed at least 4 triangle junctions (Reading, Westbury, Bristol and Newport) plus the former one at Bradford Jn. I've no idea how many there are country-wide, but you knocked off a few that day!

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  5 лет назад

      Thank you, and yes I like that statistic!
      Out of interest, how do you know the accurate chainage of the M4 overbridge?
      Yes you're right about all those triangles - and if you're counting Bristol for the Dr. Day's one there was formerly also the East Somerset Junction one just east of Feeder Bridge Jn, and the Filton/Patchway complex is several superimposed triangles... :)

    • @roboftherock
      @roboftherock 5 лет назад

      @@hastingsdiesels Thank the stars for that wonderful series called "Railway Track Diagrams". I've had them since they were Quail maps - and hand lettered. The chainage is there (Vol 3:30D) and used the centre of the main bridge on the movie (six pillars support it over the railway). That gave me an accurate time point also.
      I swithered about including the Patchway complex, but decided that since the centre point was an overbridge to exclude it. I didn't realise Feeder Bridge had been one. That's another piece of trivia to be brought out into a conversation - sometime!

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  5 лет назад

      Ah yes, the Quail maps. I don't have one for this far west.
      Regarding a triangular junction with the Bristol & North Somerset Railway, see ruclips.net/video/T3qZ5ZYQB_I/видео.html at 43:17 for map and as we then pass the remains of the facing junction (from superimposing old & new mapping, it went right through where the cinema complex now is).

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  5 лет назад

      Thank you David. It takes many, many hours to organise an excursion, and a sensible amount of notice would be around 4 months. We would consider any genuine and sensible request - bear in mind that the Track Access fees from Network Rail plus the Traincrew fees from GB Railfreight are likely to be between 5 and 10 thousand, depending upon itinerary, duration etc. Please email us if interested, via the website.

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  4 года назад +1

      Thank you. Hastings Diesels does have a stock of spares, and we take pains to look after them well. These engines, like most, are damaged by undue thermal cycling, and stopping & starting. We even have a specific procedure for shutting them down very gradually to avoid damaging the fan-clutch. English Electric made these to run and run, their service rev-limit is 850rpm and a centrifugal governor will cut off the fuel supply if the crankshaft rpm reaches 1,020.
