I just bought an SR400 3 days ago for 5500 Swiss francs (roughly 5800 USD), I got a 1000 Swiss franc discount down from the official price, 6500 Swiss francs (roughly 6900 USD).
I couldn't be more happy with this bike, it fits my style perfectly. I've had several other bikes CBR125, Yamaha FZ6, Yamaha XJ6N but this is the one I've been most satisfied with. I was also looking into the MT07 but thought I'd go for something more classic. I've had powerful bikes before to know that power isn't what I'm looking for in a bike anymore. When I drive a powerful bike, I often catch myself speeding, but the SR400 doesn't tempt me at all to "break laws" by speeding or driving like a maniac. Sure, the bike needs to have a fair amount of power, but the SR400 is very fulfilling power wise. If you're looking for reliability, style, comfort, overall economic usage, the SR400 is amazing. The MT07 seemed like a pretty standard bike to me and thus seemed like a boring choice. I'm glad I settled for the SR400 and recommend anyone who's into the classic look to take it for a spin, you will not be disappointed. An added bonus is that it's also comfortable for an extra passenger, my girl and I plan to use it to drive over the swiss alps every now and then.

I had one of these bought brand new back in 1980. It was an SR500 with a carb. I loved it. I have had many bikes since, but this is one I seriously regret selling. This bike, despite being only 400cc, is the same physical size as that bike. But that one had cast wheels and tubeless tires, a BIG plus. At least this one still has a centerstand, so a flat can be fixed if you are willing to carry the tools and spare tubes to do it. I have no problem with the kickstart only, I can "kickstart" it with my hand. But the EFI is scary. I have seen too many of these things fail. Not only is anything electronic prone to failure, but these bikes have VERY expensive fuel pumps, which can be ruined by ethanol gas and even by something as simple as running out of gas. I gave this one a long hard look, and if it were $1000 cheaper I might buy one. But that would take almost all my money, and I would need something left over to repair the EFI when it failed. If it had a carb instead, I would likely already own one. This one is the best out of the 3 by a wide margin.

  • @turbo311

The kick start only is from Japanese owners of this bike telling Yamaha to not use an electric start when the bike was brought back. They have a cult following there. They felt kick start only was more authentic. Fine with me since it's not a retro bike but actually a classic that was really never out of production.

LoL, I agree with others. I cant believe people have become so lame as to the point they cant use a kick start. I remember watching kids I knew struggle to kick start dirt bikes growing up.....I never understood how they had such a problem with it. When I first saw a SR400 in a showroom I was impressed to see it had a kick start only. This is the character of the simple and mechanically durable genius that made these Japanese bikes so awesome. I feel the same way about most modern ATV's in the sense that most no longer have a semi-manual foot shifter! With the exception of brands like Suzuki and some Honda's, most all four-wheelers these days have become fully automatic. Sure that is convenient and all....until an electric shifting solenoid goes out and leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere! as happened to my friend.

Kickstarting does get old quick, especially when the bike doesn't wanna start...
A better version of this bike is the 2007- Honda CB400SS (they are nearly identical motorcycles), except the Honey has an electric start button, ALONG with a Kickstarter for when you feel like it. Unfortunately, Honda did not bring the 400ss to the US 😭 but I've ridden them in Asia and they're awesome.

  • @kybourbonboy

My first bike was a 1969 BSA Lightening. If you've never kick started one of these on a cool damp day, you should not be complaining about kicking a new bike with electronic ignition & fuel injection.
The SR 400 was my first serious interest when getting back into riding after 4 decades. I did not want to start back too big, riding is fun, not necessary transportation.. The weight, feel and riding position are nice. But I felt the bike was a little under powered and over priced relatively speaking. Seriously considered the new Honda 500 Rebel, but it was more high tech, I wanted to go traditional. Although what really killed it was the riding position and feel, and the looks. All wrong for me.
Solution was the Suzuki S40. Big 650 single with a carb. Nice weight, low center of gravity and feel like the SR 400, but more muscular. Don't know how the SR400 is, but the 650 still has nice pull at 60+ and will tool along like that for as long as your butt can take it. These lightweight singles will wear your butt down on the highway LOL.
I'm not against kick start, but I am forever scarred by the BSA in that regard. I wouldn't mind having it as an option, but I do like the electric start after what the old Brit bike did to me.

Do the math. Adjusted for inflation the new SR is cheaper than it was in 1978. 1978 MSRP $1800 = $6566 in 2014 dollars. Today's MSRP is $5990. EFI makes starting even easier than it was on the carb bikes. Yes, I had a '78. Yes, I have a new one on order.

I think Yamaha picked the right displacement. 250 can be weak on the highway. Bigger, and a single cylinder isn't smooth. 400 is just about right. But $6k? Yikes. Does Yamaha know that we are aware of used motorcycles?

  • @shizuokaBLUES
    @shizuokaBLUES 10 лет назад +1

I think its going to appeal to a very small niche market. I paid about $5500 for it here in Japan and then added another $1500 in customizing. But that actually makes good sense here in Japan. Its more about your riding and the riding conditions. Its been selling for 36 years in Japan for a reason : It fits the Japanese urban market very well. This bike would never have appealed to me back when I was growing up with 750s in Canada. And it wouldn't have made sense there either.
I don't think the comparison to the TU250 is a good one. I had the street tracker version of the TU and was my first bike in Japan (Suzuki Grasstracker Bigboy). The SR400 has FAR more quality in the build and parts than the TU. The Yamaha is built right here in Shizuoka and I like that too.
Write me for questions and check out my video. Customizing can bring a lot the SR.

God, I wish these guys would stop calling it a reboot. The 1978 SR 500 was a very
    different bike.
1, The displacement is 100cc larger on the 78. DUH
2, The 78 had alloy wheels, not spokers like the new bike.
3 The SR 500 of 78 was faster and had a better suspention.

6 grand it not tomuch. u take care of it. and not rod it to death over and over.. itll go and go forever. because its a Yamaha. Hondas aswell. i still have my dads 1979 CB350. he got new with less than a mile on it. same motor just brakes, tires and battery. that's it.. dont smoke. only thing it rattles alil because its so old. still the ugly red too.. lol. but i cant sale or paint it. ill donthe motor when it needs it. my dad has never even dumped it. and i haven't either. first two years of high school. i rode it back and forth to school with no license. dad said i can drive to school tell i got caught. i never did. bug this was back in 1984 and 85. turned 16 in 1985. so yea im old. like the bike. lol

Too bad Honda didn't bring the CB400ss to the US or keep in it circulation in Japan. Its a better performing bike than the SR400. Better brakes, the engine has a couple of more horses and a few more torque, lighter weight, suspension, more ground clearance equating to more speed in the corners. Kick starter from 2002-2003, then kick and electric start from 2004-2007. But the SR400 is a better looking motorcycle than the Honda, and has a 30 year aftermarket following!

  • @paulrose6359

The SR 400 is NOT the same as the 78 and up SR 500. It's close and it's new but it isnot the same bike and I wish all these internet bike nerds would stop telling everybodythat this is a reboot of that bike. I own one and it has alloy wheels a completely different frame and suspention.

Everything is ok, but i feel okward to see that small cluch lever to kickstart which was present in mopeds in 70s-80s.. Rest the bike is super cool.. Have the dna of rx series.. But its too pricy for a single cylinder basic stuff when its competition is right to royal enfield.. RE will simply kill & eat this if it did not come to competitive pricing.. 😂
