I've seen this thousands of times. I know what he will say before he says it. I know the timing of it. I know the tone. And yet, every time I hear him say that last sentence, I can't help but break from inside. That Sonata at the end just makes me cry each time. Richter, thank you for the music, thank you for the human.
He was a depressive. He is very touching and I’m so glad I saw this documentary. I didn’t know anything about him before and I think very highly of him now, he has added to this world.
It’s so sad to see a man that had so much energy and power in this fragile state. It’s a reminder that life is temporary, all of us will eventually go through this. Thank you Richter, you were a gem to humanity. Rest In Peace.
Richters playing can only be described in one word: Truth. That’s what’s revealed in each of his performances. How fortunate and grateful are we to have video and recordings of this towering titan of a man playing? God bless Richters soul.
I could only imagine the weight of his overwhelming emotions as he said that final statement and rested his head on his hands, confessing infront of the camera, well Mr Richter if you wanted the world to hear you, to know your sadness, the world of music is listening and will always listen to your music and to all the cries encrypted within every recording of yours.
Альфия Мансурова those girls will have no legacy besides shame. the dedication and talent of richter will live on for centuries, because it’s a true byproduct of his soul
There’s tons of men like Andrew Tate existing, making , telling toxic and disturbing ideologies. And insta girls are basically just being themselves, but you rather compare these girls with him and ignore the real problematic people in our society. This is called misogyny my dear.
It pays to remember that we are listening to Slava at the end of his life, with medical issues preventing him from performing (and everything else that comes from being close to the end), he is clearly profoundly depressed. We shouldn't find what he says directly representative of his life or art. I think he was a proud and intense man to whom the piano and music in general gave great joy.
Wikipedia: Richter died at Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow from a heart attack on August 1, 1997, aged 82. He had been suffering from depression due to an inability to perform caused by changes in his hearing that altered his perception of pitch.[35] At the time of his death, he was rehearsing Schubert's Fünf Klavierstücke, D. 459.[36]
Very moving. I don’t remember how I came to find out about him. I must’ve been searching though video footage of horowitz and saw a clip. I’d never be the same after hearing him. I’ve never been so dumbfounded. He seemed to always play as if possessed. I’ve seen this doc a couple times. Sometimes I wonder if he ever really knew what he gave to music lovers. That look he gives after his last sentence is crushing.
Not liking himself is arguably a CONSEQUENCE of what he said before: that he finds the things that define Life disturbing. Please read Schopenhauer, Beckett, Thomas Bernhard, and many, many other greats to get a sense of these reactions. It is the "despair" that Lord Russell spoke of. Not of imminent death, no. But according to (the young) Sam Harris (not necessarily playing in the league as the above), "it is Life that is the emergency, not death".
@@vladrik7881 I am not satisfied with myself. It is a comment from his notebooks. He listened to one of his recordings and was deeply unsatisfied, which was often the case. This is what made him so great. He was never persuaded by success or the triumph in concert halls, what mattered was his craft in communicating the music just for itself.
This is not a disaster. This is reality. Richter knew that he was not really able to reach the frontiers, the real limits. Apart the gigantic exception of Schubert. There, he was the greatest of all times.

You are spot on. The last sentence.
Very moving!

Same here.
It is very sad to see him so thin and weak at the end of his life, my personal homage to one of the greatest Russian pianists ever.
He is half German too
@@albertweedsteinthethuggeni7797 Who cares? He is known as a Russian musician, not German.
He is known as a Russian musician with German roots!

Yes, especially at the shelling and destroying

An absolute genius. Thank you, Richter.

Very true, thank you!
God bless you always Master
I’ve never heard any pianist playing Schubert as convincing and mind-blowing as Richter. And still today, he’s the master of Schubert.

Remember Grammar/meaning is different when translating.
