I would love to see a video about the Canyon Spectral and Canyon Strive
We Hope!!😍😍
yep the strive will be very interesting
That would be amazing
You do a great job taking frame and especially suspension geometry and explaining how it affects the ride. Best I've seen.
Glad you like them 😁
These videos are GOLD!!! I have the trance and was so excited to see this video go up!
Nice!
Yes! Thanks buddy for making this vid regarding maestro suspension! Now I know how my trance linkage works. Cheers😁
No problem 👍
These video are so good to watch ! Keep up with the good work 👍
Thanks very much!
great comparison. and love the infographics!
Thanks!
Love the feel of the rear suspension on my 2020 Reign Advanced Pro 29. Thanks for the info Trail POV.
Glad to help
Got the 2 love it
I love this type of videos. Very interesting and informative. I ride a Guerrilla Gravity with their version of four bar linkage. I tried coil and air and both love it. I currently have a coil shock on 165mm Megatrail and climbs great. No need for lock outs.
Thanks for sharing!
Always enjoy your videos! Would be very curious about the new Transition Sentinel vs old Transition Sentinel... Thanks!!!
Thanks for the suggestion
That explain why am I using 3 spacers on my Fox X2 on my 27.5 Reign, and actually I’m light rider. Great comparison, keep the good work!
Thanks very much!
hey!
i love your videos, they entertain me and tech me alot =)
i would love to see a video in the crazy "floating suspension" design of proapin bikes.
looking forward to buy a spindrift.
Glad you like them and thanks for the suggestion!
Like always, a very informative video. Thank you!
Can you do one on the Intense JS tuned suspension? Please....
Thanks for the compliment and suggestion
Another awesome video. It's very interesting that the 29er has more anti-squat than de 27.5er, but less pedal kick-back. I love the trend towards more pedal-friendly enduro bikes. I think Propain has nailed that concept. I think it would be very informative to analyze their Tyee.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Waited a long time for this one. Thanks so much. Now this explains why my new coil shock bottomed out on 1st ride with slighly higher rated spring. Looks like Cane Creek are going to be getting some of my money for one of their progressive springs. Thanks so much for this Video.
Glad to help!
I was very surprised at how much air had to be pumped into middleshock.
Just put a cane creek on my.reign 29er and the bike is much nicer. Still got the plushness from the start but now ramps up on bigger hits
@@carlyzf250 which exact cane creek model are you running? I can’t seem to find a rear shock that would fit the new reign 2 29er I believe it should be a 145mm rear shock is that right?

thanks for the video. I know the hype is long gone but it would still be nice to see an analysis on the R3ACT- 2Play suspension design used by Marin and Polygon. Anyway whatever you do your content is always high quality. Thanks.
Thanks for the compliment and suggestion.
Awesome job explaining the maestro suspension design. I'm riding a Trance 2 29er currently so this helps me better understand the ride characteristics of the bike. It definitely is a very good pedal machine to the point where I'm rarely taking the LSC out of fully open, especially when I'm doing a techy climb (which is most trails near Denver). It doesn't do great on the square hits though since it doesn't have a rearward axle path. Really playful shorter travel bike though and as long as I don't blow through the first half of travel is quite supportive. Definitely has some trouble with big hucks to flat and high speed lose baby heads (both of these are partly just due to the fact that it's only got 115/130 of travel though). The stock suspension does seem pretty well tuned for this though and I still rarely bottom out completely on the rear. Looking at eventualy upgrading to an Eminent Onset LT or MT after getting to do a free demo and absolutely loving it. Would love to see a video on their AFS system.
Thanks for the input, glad you liked the vid :)
do one on the norco range 27.5 and the commencal clash 27.5! liking these vids bro!
Thanks for the input. Glad you're liking the vids :)
Love it!
Would you do a comparison of Canyon Torque, Canyon Spectral and some other bike by any chance?
Thanks for the compliment and suggestions.
Hi. I love your videos and would really like to see the analysis of the propain p10 suspension compared to other vpp like systems. The new tyee and Hugene are really hot bikes and up to date geometry. I woul like to see how their high anti squat through the travel will result in pedal kickback. Best regards for your amazing channel
Thanks for the compliment and glad you like the comment. I have actually had a chance to analyze the Propain Tyee over on Patreon if you're interesting in joining me over there #shamelessplug
Great review always. Can you review Propain Tyee suspension? It's very interesting bike suspension and would like your input.
Thanks very much for the input.
thank you for this video :)

Great video!
Thanks!
@@TrailPOV could you give me your opinion, is this one of the most effective, efficient rear suspension designs? and what other brands are similar?
Love the videos! Can you please do the new transition sentinel
Thanks!
Intersting video! I wonder ,have you done a video on the Trek Remedy RE:aktiv suspension?
Thanks. I have not done on the Trek, yet.
I’ve been riding a giant trance 27.5 for around a year and it has been amazing it is great for trail/xc riding but it can also handle downhill/gravity. It’s been ridden at spider mountain many times, Angel Fire, and purgatory and it still rides great I’m very pleased with the bike.
Awesome to hear!
How well does it do on large drops?
How efficient 27.5 when it comes to climbing?
@@braddehaven8828 Hi Brad
A video about the focus fold suspension would also be very interesting
Thanks for the input
Because of that Giant's "signature" leverage ratio, shocks tend to overheat on steep bumpy sections closer to the end of travel as the shock suffers from more friction.
Interesting thought. I would say most air shocks suffer from this due to the damping and constant pressurization of the air that generates heat.
Hey could you talk about Guerrilla Gravity freedom linkage? Thinking about picking one of those up soon. Love the channel!
Thanks for the compliment and input. Not sure if I'll get to it before you take the plunge on a GG
Another great video. I would be interested in a video comparing the Unno Dash linkage to the DW link on say a Pivot Switchblade (the earlier model (2016-2019). Comparing them visually, they seem pretty similar, with the Unno perhaps putting the IC a bit further forward. Given how similar the designs are, I'm interested in what defining characteristics allow Unno to get around the patents on DW link.
Thanks for the suggestion
Good job- I was waiting for this one, thank you. I wonder if current maestro is close to DW link 1.0 or gen 1 DW link...
Thanks. Not sure how it compares to gen1
It looks like the old Iron Horse bikes, but no worries. Thank you again!
Love the videos!
Can you look into the Niner CVA suspension?
Best
Thanks for the suggestion
@@TrailPOV yes niner CVA please!
Awesome analysis and comparison! Now that you have data on the maestro and Giant Reign, would it be easy enough to compare against a Liv Hail (and maybe include the Giant Trance too). It would just be interesting to see how changes in geometry affect the ride!
A quick glance at the Liv Hail from a couple years back shows a similar anti-rise and squat, but a slightly more progressive leverage ratio with less of a flattening at the end.
Another super helpful video! How do you animate the suspension compression?
Thanks. It's all done in After Effects.
You have already became my favorite MTB channel to geek over. Are you planning to make a video on Trek ABP?
My Trek Fuel Ex 2018 changed to become much easy to pedal bob after I changed chainring from 32t to 28t. That was to get much easier climbing gears since my trails require relentless climbing before all.
Can you confirm that?
Thanks for the feedback. I'm surprised that the chainring would make that much of a difference.....perhaps it's because you're spinning a lot more which exaggerates the pedalling motion (as opposed to slow steady rotations)
@@TrailPOV wow. Thanks for the quick reply. Anyway. So I am currently riding Trek Fuel Ex 2018 and had Sam NX 11spd 11-42T cassette and 32T chainring up front. My trails are extreme climbs before bombing down. And it is not fire road but straight enduro, downhill type of techy rock garden climbs. But i like climbing this trail more so than descending. So i wanted easiest gear so changed my 32T chainring for 28T. But i have been noticing more pedal bobs for a while with that. Rear shock is Fox Float DPS. It has volume spacer inside also. I messed around a lot with air volume but I haven't been able to decrease that pedal bob with air. Maybe it is just me pedaling but noticeable lack of pedaling platform.
I just changed to Sram Eagle drivetrain few days ago. So now I have 11-50T cassette with 28T chainring. Maybe i should change to 32T.
Anyway, eagerly waiting your video on Trek ABP :)
Great work. I wanna see Knolly Fugitive138. Also wanna see Athelon 150.
Thanks for the input. Knolly is up on Patreon if you're interested.
Can you do a video on the new Specialized Demo. It would be very interesting to see how a 6 link design works.
Thanks for the input. They're just using the extra links to tweak the leverage ratio...it's still actually a 4bar
Awesome video! How did you learn so much about bike design? Your videos are already a great source! But are there any books or websites where I can also read about it?
Thanks. Watching many many videos and reading tons of articles/websites by manufacturers and suspension designers for all types of equipment. It also helps having a mechanical engineering background. Since I enjoy learning and bikes, it seemed like an excellent fit.
Articles such as this: www.pinkbike.com/news/introducing-behind-the-numbers-a-new-suspension-analysis-series.html and www.pinkbike.com/news/definitions-what-is-anti-squat.html are the most obvious ones that come to mind.
Trail POV So that’s my case. I’m a mechanical engineering student and i enjoy bikes as well. Tank you for the help and keep up with the good job you’re doing with the videos!
Thank you
Glad you like it
Hey dude finding your videos super helpful on trying to decide my next bike. Have you thought of doing a vid on Mondrakers Zero suspension system? Probably the last bike on everyone's minds
Glad you're finding them helpful. Certainly thought about it, just haven't had time to get to it :)
@@TrailPOV good things come to those who wait 😊
That makes total sense, that's why no matter how I set up my suspension the small bump compliance would be absolutely shit, and all softening the suspension did was cause me to bottom out more often while still feeling inactive for small bumps. I had always felt the pedal kickback, I didn't know it was just at the beginning of the stroke though.
Perhaps look at a coil suspension with a progressive coil to improve small bump
If you still have the bike I would go for the new rockshox ultimate coil since it has hydraulic bottom out resistance. I’ll be getting one for mine soon
@@DavidFoundCo the hydraulic bottom out resistance seems pretty neat. I had a DVO coil on it, it was a little better, than the stock. Now my mom has the bike and she doesn't ride as hard so it's fine, and I got the Norco Shore that has really progressive suspension design. It's the perfect bike for my riding style.
Interesting vid. Giant offer the sx models with coil springs so would be interesting if they actually do perform better than air on gnarlier tracks. Thanks for covering an affordable brand like giant. Would be good to compare to Trek, Canyon etc
I have a 2015 Reign and I bought a coil for it... despite the analysis, it seems to work well. But I guess you cannot get away without a slightly stiffer coil but I feel like it still is a big benefit for this bike and it pedals surprisingly well with the coil too. But if I go for a day long ride then the air is going back. I also rode the 2018 Reign SX in a bikepark rental and it felt great...
Good to know. Thanks for the input!
Thanks for the input. Glad you found it interesting
Nukeproof Mega 290? Just got one and I'd love to see a video on it!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Amazing Video!!! I was wondering if you have any sugesstions for good literature to write an scientific work about the physiks of the rear suspension of mountainbikes. Thanks
Unfortunately I never kept a list of things I've read or watched over the years. Read into car and motorcycle suspensions also to understand some of the physics.
Can you do suspension analysis with the GT AOS suspension?
Great video. But question! If the suspension on the reign does suit a coil spring the why do Giant make the reign sx in both 27.5 and 29er that have coil? I only ask because I have the 2020 reign sx with a coil.
That is a really good question. When I overlay the two bikes the rear suspension looks to have roughly the same pivot locations and the front fork is just longer for the SX. My guess would be that they provided it as an option for riders who a) aren't expected to hit huge drops on the same trails as those with small bumps, and can setup the shock spring rate to have better small bump compliance knowing they aren't going to hit big drops OR b) that in order to have the bottom out prevention for the big drops, one just increase the spring force and sacrifice some small bump compliance benefits of the coil shock, resulting in a setup that has similar small bump compliance to an air shock and ramps up more linearly.
I'd be interested to see the 2020 Stumpjumper Vs 2020 Stumpjumper Evo with its longer chain stays. Also the Bronson v3
Thanks for the suggestions!
can you make a video about propain tyee? Im planing to buy it but i want to know everything about it.

Can you do a comparison of the new trance 20 2021 edition vs Canyon. Enjoy the vids.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Hey man its been a while since you’ve uploaded, you all good?
Thanks for checking in. As you hopefully saw today, the new video is up :)
Amazing video! I have the Reign 29 2 and even with two spacers, it goes through travel fast. Would a MegNeg help me in this regard?
Secondly, I have a 32t oval chain ring on the bike now and all bikes come with a 34 or 32t. I am going down to a 30t oval. Will I notice any pedal kick back on the descent?
Thanks for the feedback. The Reign comes stock with a 30t and the Reign 29 with a 32t. Given the calculations in my previous video, pedal kickback should not be a major problem on the downhills with a 30t.
What did u do to fix blowing thro the travel ??
@@bathg1 I ended up finding a Reign 29 Advanced Fox X2 shock for sale on Pinkbike.
@@mdoucette45 did it fix the problem ? How many tokens u got ??
Great video, but can you explain how the low anti-squat at the end of the travel reduces kick-back, surely the more the bike compresses the more chain growth = pedal kick back? I read the same somewhere but cant get my head around it. cheers
Anti-squat and pedal kickback are directly correlated. If you reduce anti-squat it means that there is less interaction between suspension and chain forces which means as the suspension moves the chain is less affected = less pedal kickback
I am trying to decide on a MegNeg for the Reign 29 2. It seems like it would really help it out with the suppleness off the top and more bottom out resistance. Whats your take on it?
Unfortunately not too familiar with the intricacies of the MegNeg. Let me know how it goes if you do decide to get one.
Hi, could you do video about kross soil, i haven't seen anything about that bike in english and i'm interested about it's suspension design and how it pedals etc.

Nice video! Is the Spot Rollik 150 in future plans?
Thanks. Never even heard of it, thanks for the suggestion.
@@TrailPOV Spot is a smaller company out of Colorado. They have a "living link" suspension design that would resemble vpp but the lower link is solid mounted on the swing arm and flexes. Not sure how a flex part would change how you do these.
Hey man. Please make some video on pro10 suspension on this years propain tyee or hugene
Thanks for the suggestion
Can you please work on a video regards Giant's FlexPoint versus the Maestro system ?
Thanks for the suggestion. Without expensive carbon simulation software and detailed CAD data of the link profiles it is extremely difficult to determine how an arm will bend and thus how the system will respond.

Are you going off really large jumps. Sounds off that you would be using up all the travel so easily with such low sag.
Any chance you could do the cascade link upgrade? Very interested to see if it really is an overall improvement as everyone says it is
Thanks for the input. Haven't heard of their upgrade to this bike
I only have experience with the Giant Trance 2, 150/140. I'm 210 lbs dry and with; hydration, tools and gear add another 10lbs+. I have to run my rear at 250 psi to feel efficient pedaling. I still bottom out.
The Revel Rail has my attention because of the CBF suspension. At least their explanation sounds cool.
Still bottoming out....time for a longer travel bike :)
@@TrailPOV Oh man... Now that I know the next bike will definitely have more! Thanks for the videos!
@@TrailPOV or a bike with a better leverage curve. Sorry Giant, this is substandard.

I am about to mullet my 29er and reduce the rear wheel. Just researching by now... Let's if that is possible for the Reign 2... Anyway love the bike 🙌✨
As long as you're ok with slacking the head angle, dropping the BB and altering the suspension kinematics slightly
I know this is an old video but would it be recommended to over stroke the shock by 2.5mm to get a bit more travel out back? I know the sb130 lunch ride does this
Assuming the rear swingarm doesn't collide with the seatpost I'm sure it's possible
great video! would you say the giant trance x is similar to this?
Similar shapes of curves, but probably slightly different numbers.
@@TrailPOV in your opinion whats better going up and which is better going down?
@@david029014 The Trance being still based on a Trail bike frame rather than Enduro is still likely to be a better climber
Please do the GT AOS suspension system
I don't think they're using it anymore, but good to know there's still interest
I really enjoy your videos and have wondered on many occasions if you have a favorite design overall or are more impressed with one particular design amidst the plethora now available? Thx
It would be tough to give a favorite because my riding style and terrain keeps changing and my local terrain is so much different than a lot of the rest of the world. North Vancouver is not the same as California.
@@TrailPOV Well, what I meant - and without damning nor holding any brand up to particular worship, if you were to do as I am planning,
- to take 18 months to travel the world and ride (probably avoiding the Ukraine) what design would you tend to most expect to provide the best overall experience?
Now I'm not asking for a specific brand call-out, just the design.
If you want to mention which brand's execution of a design might best lend itself to these trail-type & conditions or those trail-type & conditions, then I believe we'd all consider it a fair analysis.
@@JAFO. Wow nice being able to take of 18 months to travel like that. For reducing complexity in case things fail I'd go simple single pivot. For a nice overall adaptable bike design I'd go with something like a Revel. But if you're going to be in many countries I'd go with something global like Giant so that you can always get parts if necessary and boutique brands like Revel might have issues when in Thailand. Have fun!

Thoughts on the NAILD suspension system? (The one on the Polygon Xquareone or Marin Wolf Ridge/Mount Vision)
Haven't taken a serious look at then yet unfortunately
Hi I quite like your videos. I also do suspension analysis by myself. There is an important measurement that affects the results and that is the center of gravity. i'd like to ask you at which height do you place the center of gravity relative to the BB? Knowing that would allow me to compare your results with mine and would be so thankful
Based on what some articles have recommended as well as using linkage as a reference I have standardized at 780mm above the BB.
30mm too low IMO.
@@TrailPOV thank you man appreciate it
Could you do Fezzari cascade peak vs specialized Stump jumper?
Thanks for the input!
Sorry I just wanted to confirm did you say the 29 reign setup might be better for heavier riders? I still can't decide if I wanted a 27.5 or 29 I'm a heavy guy
That is correct. Both will probably work fine for a heavier rider, but if you max out your pressures on your current bike (assuming you have one), you might be able to tune the 29er slightly better as a result of the necessity for lower pressures
Does Rein 29 SX (spring shock) have different suspension design?
It doesn't appear to have a different design. My suspicion is it's for those who want a plusher ride and don't need the big hit performance.
Please take a look at Marin Rift Zone XR bike suspension system (MultiTrac)
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion.
My giant trance 29er has obvious rear suspension bob when i pedal with rear shock in open on a flat road
Smoother pedal strokes....or possibly give an oval chainring a shot. Some people claim that it provides a more round pedal stroke which help prevent the surge while pedaling.
